The 1998 Minnesota Gubernatorial Debate

Leading up to the 1998 elections, gubernatorial candidates Governor Norm Coleman, Jesse, Ventura, and Hubert Humphrey III debated each other. Questions came from several Twin Cities news personalities as well as a live audience at the Mall of America.

I can see why Jesse won. I was 16 and unable to vote then, but Skip is striking me as a old time politician, Norm comes across as slick willy, or a guy from the east coast, and Jesse just talks sense. Even if all 3 of them are sort of saying the same things politicians are still saying to this day. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

HH would have been a good Gov, too. But, wow, I had forgotten how much NC was an unlikable flip-floppy slimeball -- something that would be much more evident a few years later in his run for the Senate.

What good was asking the question, without context, who they would vote for if they weren’t running? What could a candidate use that question to help inform voters?
