What's the most memorable mosaic or piece of art that you've seen in person? 👀

I’ve had the pleasure of seeing the Byzantine Ravenna mosaics in person and they are honestly some of my favorites pieces of art ever. I’m so happy to see them featured here!

I went to Ravenna for a day as part of a larger trip to Venice and it ended up being the highlight of the entire vacation. The Byzantine mosaics there are absolutely stunning in person and have become some of my favorite pieces of art in the world; I think I sat staring at the ones in the Basilica di San Vitale for over an hour because I was so entranced. They were so beautiful that when I finally saw the famous mosaic ceilings inside the Basilica San Marco in Venice, my first thought was ‘Eh, they’re all right, but they’re no Ravenna mosaics.’ If you can swing it, it is so worth the trip.

Those mosaics are so beautiful. I hadn't heard about Ravenna before, but if I ever go to Italy I'd like to visit this city. I don't particularly remember any mosaic in specific that I have seen in person but I do know they were used in many parts in my country.

1:50 Looking a little deeper, since GOD is the light, I think the shimmering of Mosaic glass is to signify the presence of GOD around us. If the artists of Ancient Rome had this intention in mind, it really shows their dedication to not only GOD, but their craft aswell.

@kutter_ttl67869 ай бұрын
@@g0i2023It was God, singular. Christianity became the official religion of Rome when Emperor Constantine issued the Edict of Milan in 313 AD. By the time these mosaics were made 200-300 years later, the old Pagan religion was long gone.

love it...I worked as a potter for close on 30 years and over the last part of that career I did a lot of work in mosaics and also painted tile for both public and private commissioned works. Another artist friend (Paul Maher) and I did a series of mosaic works for Beaumont St, Hamilton here in Newcastle, Australia after an earthquake had caused the street to be closed for many weeks...this is the story of The Creative Pavement Study: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hqKsm4J3f7R6sJo
