As a 13 year old kid playing super metroid in my parents house dark basement, terrified of the bosses and the scary athmosphere, it is still almost 30 years later, my strongest and fondest memory as a gamer. Glad to had played that game when it was released back in 94, one of the best ever made!
@dronescoVKE2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely agreed. Was about the same age when playing through it. Check out hollow knight. It gave me very similar feelings. Despite its Comic look it captured the feeling of loneliness and dangerous exploration much better for me than the latest Metroid on the Switch. It’s pretty Boss fight heavy though.

I have a very special, personal "horror" anecdote about Super Metroid: As a kid, Lower norfair always creeped the hell out of me, and during one gameplay when I got to that part, I wished I wouldn't have to go through it again. So in the first save room there I saved my game and turned it off, and the next day when I went to continue the game... All the save files where gone! 8-year-old me was sure that that evil map read my thoughts and deleted all my progress so "I wouldn't have to go through it again", and that scared me so much that I didn't play the game again for a long time.

I think Shin Megami Tensei could technically appear on this list. It's definitely got one of the creepiest overall tones of any SNES RPG I've ever played. Just the way it begins alone with that imposing title theme and the actual opening cutscene where you name the characters has a really thick dark and surreal tone.

There are a lot of great games on this list and many of them are among my favorite SNES games. Super Metroid, Super Castlevania IV, Clock Tower, Demon's Crest, Laplace no Ma (there is also an English fan translation available for this), Zombies Ate My Neighbors, Ghoul Patrol, King of Demons, Musya, Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts, Another World, and Ghost Sweeper Mikami are all classics of the 16-bit era. For those wanting a dark RPG with horror elements, I would also recommend the Shin Megami Tensei games on the Super Famicom (SMT I, II, and If...) and all of them have English fan translations available. If you're looking for RPGs with dark themes and aren't averse to difficulty, those three games are highly recommended. There is also a Super Famicom remake of the first two Megami Tensei games called Kyuuyaku Megami Tensei that has an English fan translation available, but I haven't played it yet so I don't know if the remake is as infamously draconian in difficulty as the Famicom originals.

There was a scene in King Arthur's World when you lost, where he was shown bloodied and chained in a dark dungeon with his hands raised pleading. The music really underlined the horrible fate that the king had met with. Oh and there were zombies in the game as well that would swarm and turn your men.
@WhiteFangofWar11 ай бұрын
Definitely underrated game. It also had Trog demons in the Goblin Underworld that would teleport and gobble up your men whole, and even Arthur if you didn't know to keep him on an Engineer-built platform or a ladder.

One of the creepiest moments for me was in Super Castlevania 4 in the mansion. Forgot the stage, but it had the ghouls and those damn zombie dogs you kill and they come back to life! Them dogs always gave me the chills lol.
@dudeman53032 жыл бұрын
Yeah. That one secret with the old man who cries because his dog attacked you and you killed it always made me really sad too. The ending bosses are all so epic, I felt dracula himself was a bit underwhelming for some reason, I don't know if it's the music or what but having him following the 2 creepy bosses just never sat right with me because the grim reaper and the flying spear creature just freaked me out with that music too. God that music is so epic. I agree though, tangents aside, the mansion is really creepy
@CylenX62 жыл бұрын
@@dudeman5303 I thought the Grim Reaper fight was epic too, especially when he tries to pull you in and he's like- mumbling something. And yeah, that spear-thing-whatever it was was weird. I would pause the game and be like, "What IS that thing?? It's hideous!"

Wow, you perfectly described Porky Pig's Haunted Holiday in a single sentence. That game DOES feel like a nightmare. The claustrophobic music, the fluid but crudely drawn sprites, the juxtaposition of cartoony looking characters, such as the leprechauns and bats, and the eerie fog and demonic looking trees on the background that look like they came from an episode of Courage the Cowardly Dog... It all really feels like a genuine nightmare or bad fever dream.

Metroid Fusion is the real horror entry in the series. Still creeps me out when the SA-X is prowling around. I love survival horror but I'm still too much of a wuss to play any Clock Tower game except 3. The helpless feeling of not being able to fight back is too much for my poor heart. Give me an ineffective handgun or a bottle of stun-inducing holy water and I'm golden though. I've been meaning to try Laplace's Demon. I think it has a fan translation out there but I forget.
