At least they weren’t eliminated in the first round by Boston that year.

Thanx for bringing back some bad memories. I'm a New Yorker and have been a Leaf's fan since 1975. I hope I live long enough to see them win a Stanley Cup.

Even if Mario went to Toronto, I don't see them winning a SC, Pittsburgh in '91 and '92 were stacked with HOFers.

I like this segment. Would have to do the 89-90 Quebec Nordiques. That was a really bad year. They would get better but unfortunately move. As a Habs fan I miss the rivalry.

Thank you for making this video this was before my time as i was born in 1983. The 1980's without a doubt was an absolute nightmare decade for the leafs, whats crazy as mentioned in the video the Norris Division was so weak that the leafs were able to qualify for the playoffs in the 80's even making it to game 7 of the 2nd round in both 86 and 87.

it was the Doug Gilmour trade which started the Leafs rise back to winning seasons. lucky trade for Toronto and the Flames went the other way. this is when I started watching Ice Hockey

Here's my take on this. The 80's were terrible, the 90's were better, but they didn't make the finals thanks to a few teams, one being Los Angeles. The 90's and early 2000's were good for Toronto, but then management fucked us over when we traded Rask for Raycroft in 2006. The latter half of the 2000's were bad. the early 2010's were meh. (2013 got into the playoffs, but that's because the seson was lockout shortened) Then back to mediocrity from 2013-2014 until 2015-2016 when they finished last in the league and drafted Matthews first overall.

I lived in London, Ontario 1980-82 and it was tough watching HNIC and seeing the game was "over" by most Second Intermissions, and sometimes by the First...and yet the Norris Division being the Norris, with four teams making the playoffs, the Leafs were often still in the hunt, amazingly. Ballard was THE issue! When I got there, they still had Sittler, Salming and Ian Turnbull, but Goaltending was the problem. They went through Jim Rutherford and Bunny Larocque, guys past their prime but on a roster that had little defensive help. Not until Trader Cliff made the Gilmour trade did the Leafs have anything. When the Leafs got Vaive and Derlago for what was it Tiger Williams?, the coach was infamous for not being able to pronounce the latter's name correctly. Good young players like Courtnall and Iafrate and some other young defencemen who either were not coached properly or were thrown into the deep end and drowned...

As someone who had the misfortune of being a Leaf fan during the Harold Ballard era this video was triggering. And somehow I never considered that Toronto so narrowly missed out on Mario Lemieux! Mario and Vaive on the same line could have been magic assuming Ballard didn't decimate Mario's love of the game altogether. You might have also mentioned that this was the first season in four years where Rick Vaive didn't score 50+ goals.

@@TheHockeyGuy I admit I never saw that 84-85 team play. But my understanding is the Leafs were clearly tanking and wanted the #1 pick. The disappointing thing this year, as a Leafs fan, is this current team is supposedly a "contender" and they lost to their own zamboni driver

How about an early bad season by the Montreal Canadiens? They were 10-33-5 in 1939-40 and 11-24-1 in 1925-1926 for percentages of .260 and .319 respectively.

the only argument for a Leafs SC-win right now is the long time since the last win. thats not valid. the Leafs dont deserve a SC only because they havent won it in over 50 years. you win it because you earned it and that didnt happen and is still not happening.
@TheHockeyGuy

Recent playoffs show that being a top team doesn't equal a Cup. Any team can get on a run.
@holymackenaw
@holymackenaw 4 жыл бұрын
@@TheHockeyGuy i studied your great board about the top 3 each year and who won. every team from 2014 until 2019 had atleast 5 playoff appearences in the years before, won multiple series or Cups and were in the top 3 multiple times accept the Kings. the Blues were in the playoffs 6 out of 7 times before they won and Top3 2 times. the Caps were in the playoffs 11 out of 12 years before winning. the Pens were in the playoffs every year since 2007. so yeah there is a slim chance for the Leafs right now and it gets bigger with each playoff appearence but years of hard work and winning a lot of games seems to get you there.

Vancouver has a way better history than the Leafs since 1970. Not even close. 3 SCF finals trumps anything the Leafs have done. Leafs were so awful in this era that Hockey Night in Canada went to doubleheaders by the end of the decade (Toronto would always get the TO game and rarely saw the Western teams). Oh and Wendel was terribly overrated
@TheHockeyGuy
@TheHockeyGuy 4 жыл бұрын
No, the Canucks weren't a .500 teams for about 15 years. Honestly, the first two Finals runs were by underdog teams as well and the Canucks fell hard after both of the first two runs. The 2011 run was impressive, but without a Cup win it is hollow. The Canucks have also lost two game sevens in the Finals, so I wouldn't put them on a pedestal at this stage.
@rickyaz8640
@rickyaz8640 4 жыл бұрын
The Hockey Guy 2 Finals runs were flukes? Which is 2 more than the Leafs have sniffed in 54 years. The constant press adulation of sad/ bad players, horrible management... relentless. Vancouver is completely ignored in Toronto, hell Montreal was virtually ignored when they were good. Toronto has had maybe 1.5 very good teams in over 50 years. Any Leafs fan would give their left &@$ for a finals appearance
@xXPyrophorusXx
@xXPyrophorusXx 4 жыл бұрын
@@rickyaz8640 I would say that 4 of the 5 CFS they went to had good, even Cup contending team. Both Pat's said, in their 2 year going to the CF, they thought they had the team that could do it. They did have the team, just didn't work out. Quinn's teams usually made the playoffs. 1.5 is looking through haters glasses. Since you're basing on one thing: Do the Leafs have more Cups than your team?
