Some notes: Portugal doesn’t have a High speed railway, and no high speed line was opened in 1999. The lines served by the Alfa Pendular are conventional and have been continuously improved to shave off schedules. This Alfa service started in Lisbon Santa-Apolónia, not Oriente. Although CONVEL is effective, it is now obsolete and there is no way of sourcing new units for vehicles that need it, and the government’s cronic lack of investment was showing horribly by 2018 with two high profile incidents of similar nature in a space of 2-4 years. Unfortunately, only the VCC crew perished in the crash, however this is not one of the deadliest crashes in Portuguese railway history, by far. The driver of the Alfa is a childhood friend of mine, a second generation driver that is super careful and conscientious. The only thing he had time to do was to smash the emergency brake (which was already on due to CONVEL’s response) and bolt it from the cab. He reminds on facebook every year how grateful he is to be alive but his passion for his job hasn’t diminished in any way. 4005 did its job in keeping everyone safe and it was a miracle that only 44 people were injured.

Another great though tragic video, thanks. Railway companies really should stop taking risks with the lives of its passengers. Vehicles should not be allowed to run, while awaiting life-saving equipment, whatever the reason for delay. As stated towards the end, they were waiting for such equipmenr/devices. In this case, they should have used alternative train-sets, or not run the service. They should not run the trains, in the hope that nothing would happen. It's a bit like the Titanic; sailing without enough lifeboats, in the belief that she was unsinkable.
