The #SubaruWRX is long been the halo performance vehicle in the Subaru lineup. For 2024, the revival of the #SubaruWRXTR brings back a more #TunerReady trim level to the #WRX lineup. While this is not meant to replace the higher performance #WRXSTI, this #WRXTR combines some of the hardware upgrades from the CVT only #WRXGT into a manual only sports sedan that is not much more expensive versus the #WRXLimited trim on which its based.

As a 06 STI owner, without the stronger 6 STI transmission, there is no way I would pick this costing 42k over a GR Corolla.

According to Toyota, they delivered a total of 4700 GR’s in 2023. Most dealers marked them up eight to ten thousand dollars above MSRP. Add delivery charges, sales tax etc and they will cost about $56,000. Plus.

​@@AntilleanConfederationI had the 02 and traded in for a new 2011 Ltd awhile back. 11 is better in many categories. Just for fun, I drove 23 WRX and it's really good. There's a tuner where I live that's tuning these new WRX with mods for under 5k to make it a 11 sec car.

Liking what I see here except for the ride-punishing and thin rubber-band 35 series tires. Heard they had to go with bigger 19" tires to clear the new brakes, if true, then probably no downsizing, which would suck. This trim will be called the RS in Canada, no announcements on pricing yet.

I think plastic cladding should just be painted. But for cost cutting measures I can understand why they leave it unfinished.

It looks awful painted. Super blobby and bloated looking. The rear bumper, I agree, is whatever - but I think the wheel wells etc work fine. Plus, no rust!

I bought a 2023 WRX Premium a month ago and absolutely love it. The problem I have with the TR is that I don't think it's worth paying over $42k for. At least it's not $50k like some people were anticipating.

$42k isn't bad considering big brake kits for this car are easily $4-6k. So that, plus the cost of them recaros kind of justify the price.

Awesome review as always! Candid thoughts, while I think this is a good car and definitely an improvement over my 2017 WRX I am astounded by the price difference for this generation and trim at $42k before markups vs sticker for mine at $29k in base trim. No adaptive suspension, no sunroof, no cooled seats, and tons of plastic. Not even a digital dash which isn’t a deal breaker for me. Last, Subaru still can’t seem to give us a good feeling and shifting manual trans. VW, Toyota, Honda, and Hyundai all have this figured out but Subaru persists with the sloppy shifter which is a the bane of this car’s existence. 2k more you’re in a type r or at least close and objectively that’s a better vehicle in my opinion. Just shell shocked at pricing compared to 5 years ago for similar features. For comparison 2017-2018 STI models were topping at $41k in my area (PA).

Cars are generally A LOT more expensive than they were 5-6 years ago. Yeah, the shifting is weird on WRXs and has always been tbh. An aftermarket shift stop only costs around $40 and takes roughly 15 minutes to install, which will clean up the slop and almost make the shifting action feel like a Honda. Type Rs are still massively marked up to the moon nowadays, so you won't easily be able to find an affordable Type R. With all being said, I'm not a huge fan of the TR version for what it's worth. You can mod a non-TR WRX to make it TR-like significantly less than the $42k asking price.

@@xtrekrex100% agreed with all of that. Appreciate the insight on the shifter and that actually is how I have mine: short shifter, shift stop, shift plate and shift bearing. Definitely an improvement but still feels like a box of rox lol. Still love my vehicle but sometimes I do desire some more tech, comfort, and a better sound system. All in all though agreed prices are nuts, with most enthusiast vehicles being unapproachable without a significant monthly loan payment

@anthonydannunzio134 The '24 base is $33k. The '24 TR is $43k. The big brembo brakes alone are $6k in the aftermarket. Then you have better wheels and tires, recaros, significantly better headlights, significantly better stereo, higher quality interior trim, better suspension etc... To get a base to the level of a TR in the aftermarket would cost a lot more than $10k, and even then the TR will have a significantly better resale value making it a much cheaper venture overall compared to modding a base. I would say the base is a better value if you leave it as-is! But if you want the suspension, seats, brakes etc.. the TR will be much cheaper all said and done.

Internals are supposed to be strong. The only thing I hear is that the head bolts need to be upgraded if you go above 400hp. The transmission is also limited on how much torque it can take.

Tuner ready means you can tune for optimal fuel eco if you want that tuning isn’t just power it goes for how to tune the car for the user to have a better driving experience. I have an eco tune on my subie it’s the big tune but 4k rpm fuel cut like valet mode can’t get boost. Also impaidn 250 bucks for my 85 rx turbo then sti swapped it and boom cheap power and cheap insurance

I'll drive my '19 WRX until the wheels fall off, but I have to say that this is the first time I've looked at the new model and said "that looks pretty good". Maybe it's the color. Personally I'd get body color fender cladding and paint the rear bumper. I'm warming up to the design slightly.

As an owner of a 2022 WRX Premium I just love how analog, mechanical these vehicles are. They remind me of performance vehicles of the late 80’s and early 90’s. The only thing missing are manual windows because even a factory CD player is available.

When I went to test drive a wrx ,the dealer said they were planning on offering sti parts to add to the wrx . I bought a golf r but I kinda think I should have bought the wrx . I liked the way the wrx drove more but I went Vw .

Golf R has a muchhhhhh larger aftermarket since the EA888 is old and the MQB platform has been around for like 10 years… It was the better call but I wouldn’t blame you if you’d buy this WRX instead

I went with the MK8 GTI vs the WRX. Just more livable and playful in day to day driving. It was a close call but can’t seem to break my GTI habit. Either way you can’t go wrong. These type of vehicles will soon be just a memory sadly.

@@TheRealCatof This gen has apparently been holding up really well to tunes. The VA (last gen 2.0) did indeed blow up like crazy. So far this platform has been way more durable for tuning.

Eliminating the sti would be ok if they just offered a rear lsd to give the wrx some sporty nature. Having owned a modded 15 I can say its just a cruiser and not a sporty corner carver. Bought an evo and never looked back

The irony of this car is, once tuners put on all the modifications this and that. The warranty is voided from scanning the ECU for tunes. What the point of buying a tuner ready wrx if you can't do anything to it.

I too am getting used to the new WRX styling. All the black plastic on the bumpers are actually growing on me too. Maybe it’s a good thing since people are getting so careless while driving. I got backed into a few months ago in my 17’ WRX and had to repaint the bumper. If I would have had a newer one, I feel like a body shop could have just repaired the black plastic. Just my opinion of course.

I don’t mind the black cladding. Especially when parallel parking in the city. I’m an excellent parallel Parker but I can’t say the same for my neighbors. Love the wheels! No sunroof is a disappointment.

I wish these manufacturers would quit deleting the sunroof! Very few will actually track a vehicle, most are DD or weekend toys and we like to have a sunroof!

I think at that price point it kinda makes no sense having a TR trim cause you may as well buy a base for like 10 to 12k cheaper and add the upgrades you want and still come in cheaper. Only thing you save is the time and work if you didnt wanna do it or cant do it yourself

Nah FastWRX has a brembo style front big brake kit painted and branded with STi logo for 2 grand. That’s what I got on mine well worth it.

Indeed. Just move up to 5w40 if you are going to track it. Let it warm up well and let it cool down well. This new model is crap without the STI transmission and diffs.

@@AntilleanConfederation i totally agree. Subie should have put the STI trans/diffs in it. I would have been happy to pay extra for such an upgrade from factory. Even my premium has a “Track mode” which is just stability and traction off. ABS stays on no matter what.

Soa never officially said what tr means whereas 2006 they did state tr meant tuner ready.

Subaru could have turned up the turbo wick to at least 15-28 psi and give the TR a bit more power. They upgraded the suspension and brakes which handle a power increase. In saying all that I would upgrade my 22 prem for the TR .

Yeah - but even if they did upgrade the power, Subaru knows a huge % of buyers are going to tune it anyway. Kind of a smart move for keeping price down tbh

Honestly the base models stock suspension is really good. Albeit stiff though good rebound rates and not alot of body roll. So you’d be better off grabbing a big brake kit for sub 2 grand and there you go.

It is a big miss that you release a "TR" model but you don't throw in the marketing for the tuner market where you offer factory support. It's like selling the metal part of the shovel without the handle. Then you make it a point about not talking about the handle.

STI not coming back really doesn't surprise me, Subaru hasn't been a real enthusiast brand for many years now and they've been actively trying to pull away from it. i'm frankly amazed the WRX even still exists as a real option and not some Ford Electric mustang type crap. Still looks awful to me, really can't get behind Subarus modern design language but that's just me.

@@dishonestpanda-1106 right that's why we've lost almost every real sport trim for almost all their vehicles and if u really fall for the Emissions test excuse you're dumb, there's no shortage of sporty 4 pop turbo cars past couple years, they easily could've done it but they didn't cause they've been shifting away from real performance vehicles & trim for a while now. give ur head a shake bud.

I am on my third WRX STI. I can’t see selling my current version for the new WRX. The cladding and lack of power are disappointing. Great overview from Redline as always :)

Could be worth test driving. The HP numbers don’t tell the whole story. I think it has a nicer torque curve than the 2.0 engine. The 2.4 also has more tuning potential since the turbo boost is lowered from the 2.0.

@@Mienboi821510 You mean starvation issues? I don't have any issues with street driving but you might need a baffled pan if you track it. I don't think the turbo FA24 has as much of a problem as the NA FA24 in the BRZ. Supposedly the scavenging system is better. As far as consumption, I hope that issue is fixed. So far so good at 1100 miles.
