Ask why the government would wait until AFTER all the farmers planted to shut off the water. Even if it's turned back on in a week or two, crops will be lost and farmers bankrupt. The timing was deliberate. Who benefits if the farms go bankrupt?

@@bradhowlett1 I know where the shell game starts. The trump flags tell me these farmers dont know a thing. I get local news in different states everyday, since I drive for a living and the news doesnt tell anyone the whole story.

70% of all Idaho potatoes come from this affected area. If they allow this to occur without immediate intervention and punishment it will starve the country. Idaho is also the top #1 producer by rank in potato production. This is too important for the country to be allowed to happen. It could even create food riots in some areas. This is too important to allow to happen.

It’s not some huge cave that’s just holding water it’s just a region of moist soil. It’s like when you dig in the sand at the beach you will hit water but you can’t add to it you will just fill up your own hole

UPDATE June 19, 2024: Water Curtailment Order lifted (Idaho Press) Groundwater irrigators and surface water irrigators have completed a deal that saves 330,000 acres of Idaho farmland from being dried up and averts economic catastrophe in the state. A mitigation agreement for 2024, brokered by Governor Brad Little and Lt. Governor Scott Bedke, has now been signed by all parties and has been submitted to the Idaho Department of Water Resources (IDWR for approval. When the deal is approved, IDWR will lift the curtailment for all nine ground water districts whose patrons irrigate with groundwater from the ESPA. “This is a huge relief to our members, who have had their livelihoods threatened over the past month,” said TJ Budge, attorney for Idaho Ground Water Appropriators. “We want to thank Governor Little, Lt. Governor Bedke, Senator Van Burtenshaw and, especially, all of our groundwater district members for their sincere and significant efforts to get a deal done before it was too late.”

The regulation is complicated...but the issue is not - there simply is not enough water to meet all the demand. No government, no single wet year, and no amount of wishing will change that. To all farmers, particularly junior users, this is your warning - every hydrologist has said this day will come (where we figured all this out decades ago...why do you think those agreements were signed in the first place), and that day is here. Its time to pull your red heads out of the sand, the climate has changed, the fossilized groundwater is being exhausted, this unique wet year has not solved the problem, and you WILL have to do something different in the coming years. Stop complaining about the government taking your water and start having those hard conversations about real solutions for your farm - because the reality is - all of you will not be in business in 10 years - you are farming water intensive crops with fossilized groundwater water in the high mountain desert - this always was a temporary enterprise.
