So apparently the action took place on..! 18th December - why do we sing 24th February? Does it just scan better? Reading into it, the 'Pink' was indeed present, but on the British side, and didn't actually take part in the action. The first ship to close with the British ship ('Mary Rose', not to be confused with Henry VIII's ship Mary Rose which sank in 1545) was called the 'Half Moon'. The 'Rose and Crown' appears to be entirely invented - to rhyme with 'sent her down', no doubt. Its not recorded which was the second ship to close with Mary Rose, but the last of the Corsairs to pass her was called the Golden Lion. Its not clear the Mary Rose sank or captured any of the Corsairs but the fact she survived the attack was victory in itself. In fact Mary Rose had cut loose a prize ship she was towing at the time (King David) so as to reinforce Mary Rose with the men that had been crewing her.
