I don't actually know why I watched this because I know it all but I did and it was probably the best description of how a camera works that I've seen. I think everyone in photography could easily learn to understand how exposure works by watching this video. Good job.

Very informative, easy to follow graphic. I hope you teach photography for a living. This being the first video I've seen of yours I am impressed and will be checking out more of your work, I'm getting back into photography after a couple year break and this was the perfect refresher course. Thank you.

Sorry, I don't have time for a video now, but... The trick will be to 1) set your camera to the lowest ISO 2) set the camera to Aperture Priority (Av) and set it to the smallest aperture (largest number) that you're comfortable using (you will lose some sharpness at f/22, for example, but not much). That will give you the longest exposure possible in the light. To get longer exposures than that you have to use a strong Neutral Density Filter. B+W makes good ones... you'll want at least 6 stops.

I've been trying to understand the relationship between theses three things for years, and have chickened out by resorting to the more automatic features of my very capable camera. This video was exactly what I needed to really absorb the relationship between aperture and shutter speed, and practice adjusting things manually. Thank you for opening this wonderful gate!

Hey Matt, When people say that you should learn manually, what they really mean (or at least should) is that you should learn semi-manually... in other words, set the camera to Aperture Priority or Shutter Priority so that you're in control of one function, and the camera meters the scene and controls the other. I don't know of a good crash course, but I can recommend this: start by understanding this video, and learn to use Aperture Priority and Shutter Priority :)

Such a wonderful way to put all of this into a video. I came into photography with a lot of confidence but as soon as I got my x-e1 I found out I knew nothing about the 3 basics you shown here. Now I didn't get it to well but I got a basic Idea now and I just need to expand it by going out and shooting more! Thank you so much! (The part at 7:07 got me pretty confused I mean when you put the Iso up or down I didn't know If I had to put the Aperture up or down or the Shutter up or down. But still thank you I now have a foundation!)

Hi Kim, These three basics apply to all cameras, of every type... film, digital, old, new :) The only real difference is that with a smaller digital point and shoot, you may not get control over all of these things, independently. - Matt

Sometimes, of course, using a long lens isn't an option... if you're shooting a portrait indoors or in another tight space. Using different focal length lenses also affects the relationship between the size of distant objects and the subject, so it's important to be able to make those creative choices separately. For a quick example, see my video about Lens choice: (13 seconds long) Zooms from 200mm out to 18mm with the subject staying the same size.

It depends on what lens you'll be using, and how much light pollution there is. The general procedure will be this, though: Set the camera to manual exposure. Set the ISO as high as would be acceptable for your purposes... with the T3i, ISO 800 is usually fine, 1600 is usually workable. Open up your aperture as large as it will go (ie, smallest f-stop number), and then take a test shot at about 8 seconds. If it's too dark, double it to 15 seconds, and so on... and use trial and error.
