The movie "The Last Samurai" is also based on the story of a French soldier, Jules Brunet. Jules was part of a French delegation, at the time of Napoleon III, to help the Japanese improve their weaponry and training with firearms. At some point, Jules decided to join the Shogunate forces, just like Eugène... And many more frenchmen, who help building the Republic of Ezo, a remnant of the Shogunate forces.

Fun thing to also know is that although the french government (of Napoléon III) didn’t officially authorised his stay they didn’t officially condone or reject it. Some writing suggests that most higher ups actually approved but due to diplomatic tensions of the time couldn’t officially approve his behaviour

Im French and I think I can explain why Eugene run away from his ship. During the 19th century there were like a obsession about Asia (especially japan) in France. Rich people would make "Japanese living room" in their house, and nowadays you can still see one of them in the house of George Sand. She even got a samurai armor (it was stolen and there were a lot of diplomatic issues with that but that is not the subject). And the fact that japan was so trendy at that time in France can explain why he wanted to stay. However, nowadays French people still love japan. The older generation because stories of samurai and shinobi came to us.. and my generation just grown up with Naruto and One Piece. That's all^^

One more samurai should be included. When during a storm, “De Liefde”, a Dutch ship crashed into the shore of Bungo, now Usuki, Beppu on 1 June 1600, there was a merchant called Jan Joosten van Lodensteijn, shipmate of Adam Williams. Like Miura Anjin, Joosten was made Hatamoto by Tokugawa Ieyasu. He was given the name Yayosu and a piece of land at the coast of Edo, which became later”Yayosu Quay” or Yaesu. The land given to him was located between the shore and where now Tokyo Station stands. It is easy to find because this exit of Tokyo station is called “Yaesu Deguchi”. A statue in his name can be found at Yaesu-dori. Jan Joosten was born in city Delft in the Netherlands, where a square, Jan Joosten Plein, carries his name.

It's hard to say, we all have a LOT of ancestors. That's why basically everyone in western Europe is a descendant of Charlemagne for example. If you forget related ancestors (which in practice lowers the number of ancestors greatly), you would have 2^n ancestors in n generations. For exemple in 30 generations, it's more than 1 billion (more than the human population back then!). Of course in practice as I said, it's less because many of our ancestors are related, but still, a massive number. It's almost garanteed you have at least one samurai ancestor if you're Japanese.

Thank you so much for it! :) Speaking of foreigners in Japan, you should one day talk about Wenceslau de Moraes, a Portuguese writer and officer of the Portuguese Navy, who fell in love with Japan so much after he visited the country in 1889, he never wanted to go back to Portugal, becoming less Portuguese and more Japanese as he got older (world's first weeb?). He wrote books about Japan, had romantic relationships with 2 Japanese women and died in Tokushima in 1929. Fascinating story :D ありがとうございます from Portugal.

@@FireFoxGaming_ Nobunaga indeed took interest in Yasuke when he arrived however a year and a half later, Honnoji Incident happened where Nobunaga was assassinated. Afterwards Yasuke was sent to the local church. It’s all written in the book named Shincho Kohki. While we can’t believe everything on the book since it’s an ancient book, the info of Yasuke is mostly from the book so yeah.

Miura Anjin is also a prototype that was used by James Clavell in his book Shogun wich is filmed as a series in the 80's and i often watch it again and again. Toshiro Mifune is starring there as the Daimio Yoshi Toranaga.

There are many people complaining about Ubisoft introducing and taking liberties in regard to the story of Yasuke, but Yasuke has been introduced to the West numerous times. In the form of Afro from Afro Samurai and the somewhat recent anime “Yasuke.” Chadwick Boseman was set to play Yasuke which would have definitely brought Yasuke to mainstream and possible further research on his life.

Neither Afro Samurai and the Netflix Yasuke (which was painfully garbage) are comparable to AC when they have robots and demons, while Assassin Creed (which is still fiction in term of story) is largely based on actual real life historical setting and try to sell themselves as accurate to the time period and other historical details. The problem is less about Yasuke in the game and more about how Ubisoft finally made an AC game in Japan and you don't even play as a Japanese Samurai.

wait maybe Eugene Collache was trained with other japanese soldiers for Tokugawa's elite corps by Jules Brunet a French Officer who participate in the boshin war, in the shogunate side, that checks out, Brunet came to japan in 1867 in yokohama. when Edo falled, Napoléon III gave the order to french officers to going home but Jules Brunet and few others officers refused and stayed there, they leaved the French army to join Enomoto Takaeki at Hokkaido in a hope to counter attack. after the fall of fort goryokaku (if i misspelled the name sorry) in the hakodate battle, Brunet came back to France and he didn't had any problems and reinstated in the army he will end his career has a general. he was the inspiration for tom cruise's movie role "the last samurai"

Will Adams was from my home town, Medway in Kent. Because of him, Gillingham (his birth place) in Medway is now twinned with Yokosuka, hence several roads in Gillingham have Japanese names. Prior to covid-19, there was an annual William Adams festival held in Gillingham, celebrating the towns friendship and Japanese culture, as well as a Miura Anjin festival held in Yokosuka each April.

My question for Yasuke deniers is, will him being a real samurai or not change him being in the assassin's Creed game? As you've clearly just found out about his existence during the assassin's Creed trailer, will you then go retroactively boycott his inclusion as a samurai in the dozen or so (Japanese made) games and other media he's been depicted in over the years as a samurai?

It's sad because people were trying to downplay his existence and referring to him as just an entertainer for a novelty at best I'm sitting here thinking there is an actual Japanese man telling you that he existed and was considered a samurai. Yet no one's talking about the greedy price tag and questionable business practice.

@@SylvesterJamison it's actually a brilliant play on Ubisoft's part, they knew the simple minded, one note reaction this would get from a small but vocal group, most of them dug up from dank chat groups that don't care about games, in order to get free publicity and simultaneously distract from their greed.

Let's not forget about Jan Joosten, a Dutch merchant that went to Japan with, originally, 5 ships, only his ship, ''De Liefde'', arrived in Japan in 1600, on this same ship was the English samurai William Adams, as mentioned. Thing is that the 4 ships lost weren't attacked by the Portuguese or Spanish, one returned home when they entered one of the most dangerous routes, one other ship, called ''De Hoop'' was lost during a storm when they passed Chili and the other 2 were lost during heavy fog. It's weird Jan Joosten wasn't even named considering a district in Tokyo is named after him ''Yeasu'' and he became important to the future trade relations between The Dutch Republic and Japan that even went on during the isolation policy and having the same priviliges as William Adams. Also fun to note is that the 18 cannons on De Liefde were used in the Battle of Sekigahara.

Did Anjin Miura (Willian Adams) was “asked” to stay in Japan? For what I read about him, he actually was forced to stay by the shogun. When he finally was permitted to leave he died while preparing his travel back home. By the way, the character John Blackthorne in the book “Shogun”, which later was made into film and tv series, is based on him.

Although Adams was initially prevented from leaving Japan, as were all the survivors of De Leifde, he was at liberty to leave for many years before his death. It is thought that he would have left on the first English ship to visit Japan, but he felt slighted by captain, John Saris. He died as a result of malaria, contracted on a Japanese Red Seal trading voyage to neighbouring countries.

From what I read, the Shogun made Anjin a samurai to put him under both his control and his protection. As a samurai, Anjin was forbidden to leave Japan, so that he would continue to teach western shipbuilding to the Japanese navy. At the same time, it also sent a message to missionaries who were plotting against him that any harm coming to Anjin would bring the shogun's wrath down upon them.

Great video as usual! The américain minitv series "Shogun" from the eighties seems to be inspired by the story of Muira Anjin. The show is excellent. The story of the French samurai seems to have inspired Tom Cruise and Hollywood.

" The last Samurai" was set in the time of the 1877 battle of Satsuma, basically the dying throes of the power of the Samurai, demonstrated in the film ,by the cutting off ,of the young lads top knot, only Samurai could have that hair style. it was symbolic of the loss of respect and power status.......

Konnichiwa Shogo san I have to say that the TV series shogun must be taken from what you have just said 5 ships 1 English pilot who became a samurai same year 1598 only he changed the the name to blackthorn played by Richard Chamberlain. I also like your posts very informative arigato gozaimasu.

Yes. Clavell's "Shogun" was based on the arrival of *De Liefde* which brought William Adams to Japan. "Shogun" is a horrific dramatization of events. **Jacob Jansz Quaeckernaeck (of my family) was Captain of De Liefde. A replica of the ship is at, Huis Ten Bosch (ハウステンボス, Hausu Ten Bosu) a theme park in Sasebo, Nagasaki, Japan.
