Similar to my reasons, but mainly for me was to have that feeling of responsibility. Having something to work towards and achieve in the long-term which would develop my morale.

I wanted to do more with my mind than what I was doing, shipping and receiving. My first career choice was music, but due to economic and other factors I had to pursue that without going to college for it. Private lessons and learning "on the job". I wasn't very good at math in high school, so I figured I didn't have the aptitude. But one evening I was watching the local news and a CEO of a company was interviewed and said they needed electronics technicians. That got me to think I might be able to do it. I enrolled in night classes at the local technical college in the ASEE program and after five years and a lot of sweat I got my Associates degree. I proved to myself that it was more about attitude than aptitude. It changed my life, giving me a great career and good financial security and confidence. Every day was new and interesting and I got to be creative. My contributions were appreciated and I felt valued. Today I am retired from Electronics, but I didn't give up music. Now I have more time to play and follow my passions.

I’ll never get a degree in engineering, I’m 50 years old, which means by the time i get it, it will be time to retire. Also it’s almost £10000 a year in the uk, it’s just not feasible for me. I did however buy your book off Amazon, only got as far as the table of contents, I’m in portugal this week on holiday, so i made the wife a promise, no study for a week. My goal is electronic engineering and i have an ability to ace interviews and talk my way into jobs that i want, but i am looking forward to reading the book

I hope you like the book! Let me know what you think. And you’re fortunate to be a skilled interviewer.. most aren’t. Good luck!

Great insight into Mechanical Engineering Jack! How do you think studying to Masters would help in an entrepreneurial capacity? Like a startup venture for example...Would be good to hear your thoughts on this. Also, would you say studying in this field could future proof you to a certain extent considering where the world is heading?

good questions. i would say that a masters is less valuable if you are planning to start your own thing. Unless you have a very specific idea and the masters education would help teach you the execute that idea. with my experience, entrepreneurship is best learned on the job and as you go. hope that helps!

You are spot on with everything except the pay. Engineers are not paid well. Considering how hard the degree is to get, the pay is not proportional. There are people with simple degrees like communications that make more money than engineers.

Hey thanks! Yea, I would agree that engineers deserve more for the work they do and for the education they have. And that you can find examples from other fields where folks are making a ton more. But on average, an engineering degree is probably the best paying 4-year degree choice. Thanks for the comment 👍
