I have been a hybrid art therapist for 37 years. Not an intentional career path. I have degrees in art education and special education. My teaching jobs have all been as a special education teacher. Art has been a wonderful emotional outlet for my students as well as a way to help students discover their incredible talents . I have been able to incorporate art with all levels of special needs including autism, deaf and hard of hearing, visually impaired and cognitive impairment. There are so many ways to use art in the classroom. Not only to facilitate creativity, but instill confidence, teach organizational skills and have fun. It’s truly amazing how art projects eliminate the need for behavior interventions. I just retired. I will miss my students but I need more art and less paperwork in my life.

How possible is it to be an art therapist and have your own art practice at the same time? Also, what kinds of art projects do you give your clients? I am currently an animation student that loves to write and illustrate stories. However, I'm thinking about potentially studying art therapy because I have an interest in psychology. I still want to make my own art though, and I'm not sure if my animation/ graphic novel skills would translate well.

I’ve just deferred from my teaching course because I don’t want to go into teaching, but I was thinking about doing a masters in Illustration as I’ve already studied fine art. I want to do illustration but I also want to do something rewarding and social like art therapy, did you decide what you’re going to do?

Yes, you can still practice your own art! Let’s say, your job takes 37.5 hrs a week, 8x7=56 hrs for sleep, so you have 74.5 hrs completely free from work or sleep. Subsctrust travel, eating, showering, and tv watching…. that still leaves you MINIMUM of additional full time job in a week for your art hobby. Yes, of course you have tons of time to practice your own art or study something…or get another full time job. Please remember, you don’t need any extra degrees to be art therapist in most places, don’t waste your money on useless unnecessary degrees. You can be an art therapist after high school. Art therapist earns close to minimum wage, that’s why you don’t need to waste your time and money. Best luck on your journey! You CAN do this!

How do you bill insurance for art therapy? How do you market your self if you want to set yourself up to take insurance?

If you are a licensed art therapist (this is pertaining to the U.S. only), then you can panel on the insurance plans because you are a mental health provider recognized by the state. In terms of marketing, you could say that you take insurance for whatever plans you're on on directory websites like Psychology Today.

That's a good question! It's hard to say, since there is no real research on that, and I have no idea what other business owner art therapists make. The only thing I can say for sure is that there are fewer limitations in terms of how much you can make, compared to employee work.

The American Art Therapy Association keeps records of what its members make and how many hours they work. Also, the department of labor in the US keeps records of what art therapists (or maybe expressive art therapists) make.

Great question. It's basically wherever you want to offer your services. They could be the organizations I mentioned employee art therapists work in, like hospitals, nonprofits, community centers. Anywhere that services mental health or needs mental health support for their clients.
