Four Kings: amzn.to/2rOAnnz Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvelous Marvin Hagler, Thomas Hit Man Hearns, and The Hands of Stone, Roberto Duran. These men ruled the ring during the last golden age of boxing. They rose from poverty and obscurity to become legends. They left their marks on history, and on each other. Their styles, and their personalities, were diverse. But each man would come to know the others well, as they fought each other for the prize of the being the greatest of an era.
All 4 of these exceptional fighters would face each other in the ring. In another era, any one of them could have dominated several weight divisions for years. But in the last golden age of boxing, each man would form deep rivalries and take eachother to the limits of their talent, stamina, and willpower.

Sugar Ray Leonard as out boxer; Robert Duran as swarmer; Tommy Hearns as brawler; Marvin Hagler as boxer puncher The real examples of STYLES MAKE FIGHTS The deadliest beauty of this ancient punching based martial art
@combatsportlover6919
@combatsportlover6919 8 ай бұрын
Except Sugar Ray Leonard was a swarmer and brawler as well as he had to do this against Hearns. Roberto Duran had a good jab and was an excellent counter puncher as he had to do this more often when fighting at a higher weight later in his career. Tommy Hearns was actually an out boxer who preferred to stalk behind his long jab despite his heavy right hand although he could brawl in close or box off the back foot when needed. Hagler was definitely a boxer puncher but could do everything else as well. The thing that makes these 4 what they are is their versatility.

@@tinaa9231 I agree, skill wise he was the best of them, but he has terrible strategies. He out-boxed Leonard twice, choosing to slug it out in the first fight and being TKOd and being robbed of his win in the second fight. And if he can firmly outbox Leonard he most certainly could've out-boxed Hagler, but no, he chooses to have a WAR, with Marvin FUCKING Hagler. And we all saw what he did to Roberto Duran. If he made better decisions he could've went down as a top 3 welterweight/middleweight of all time.

I was lucky enough to remember watching them all in their prime years {and beyond}. I took for granted the greatness I was seeing at the time, not really realizing just how great they were, and how badly the sport would suffer after they retired. I respected them all, but Marvin was the man. And yes, he WAS CHEATED out of a victory, because Leonard was their cash cow, and there was no way they were going to decide against him. Marvin needed to flat knock him out like he had Tommy, and when he didn't, that was that. Thanks for the postings, I love watching those fights from the 1970s-80s, they really were golden!

Duran was exceptional, he perfected what I call "wing chun" boxing (haha, don't get upset) i.e Duran was able to SIMULTANEOUSLY do a bob and weave and counter. Sugar Ray Leonard - he took Ali's style and perfected it even further, the toughest style to use in boxing if your reach is shorter than your opponent's as was the case in his fight against Hagler. You have to get in, do a few punches and get the hell out - and that is difficult, especially if you don't use bob and weave as a way of entering your punching range, which Leonard didn't, again, against Hagler - he only used footwork. Do SRL and Duran. Hearns is not that complicated, it's basically Wladimir Klitchko (both trained by Manny Steward) and Hagler is a freak of nature.

Although Hearns is my favourite all time, I'd love to see you break down Duran's style. Its hard to look past his ferocity. On the surface his style seems the ultimate embodiment of boxing machismo, but there is a subtly to Duran, the way he would role his shoulders, moving his head enough so the punches just missed without every being out of position to punch - and the thing you touch on in this video, his ability to make space on the inside

@@ReservoirPunk most rank floyd higher than hearns - A. Doesnt mean he was better. And B - even a superior fighter can lose to the right (or wrong) opponent. Its a matter of style. Now - as for floyd being a defensive master, no doubt. But most of his offense is based on counterpunching and not brawling or stocking your opponent. If you know hearns, you know that in order to defeat him - you brawl - and you brawl to kill - because your gonna get tagged yourself with his unbelivable power and speed. Floyd is not the boxer to outbrawl a huge guy like tommy. And tommy was NEVER outboxed, only outbrawled. This fight will probably look like the hearns vs benitez fight. Floyd wont stock tommy - too risky. But on the other hand, thats his best chance. Even floyd wouldnt outbox hearns in million years (i think leonard was better than floyd and leonard was outboxed twice by hearns). Floyds method of relying on counterpunching is useless when you face a 6.2 giant, with a cobra jab that keeps you in a different zipcode when he tags you.
@porkfrog2785
@porkfrog2785 5 жыл бұрын
ridiculous, Hearns was much too big and powerful for Floyd...Leonard had greater reach and at least equal speed to Floyd, and got a detached retina for his trouble...if you think Floyd is wading into Hearns like Leonard did and merc-ing him, you don't know Leonard OR Floyd...the whole matchup would be a joke--6'1" vs 5'7", a guy who like to potshot outside vs a guy with a dominant jab and a heavyweights height and reach and elite power? And Floyd's gonna win somehow? Even Mr Rourke couldn't arrange that fantasy

I remember hearing what someone close to Hagler told him about his chances of becoming a champion. He told Hagler he had an additional three things against him. He was black, he was a south paw, and he was very good. All these things will make it much more difficult than it is to become Champion. It didn’t stop Hagler, a common thing amongst successful people in any profession they never give up.

I'm not gonna say that Floyd Mayweather Jr is the most entertaining or the best boxer in history. However he is certainly one to be noted and possibly may just be the best defensive boxer in history. A lot of people shame Mayweather for his fight against Manny because he "ran away" but in all reality to avoid your opponent in a small boxing ring is definetely a note worthy skill. I'm speaking on experience as well. Mayweather did show he is a smart boxer and know what he was doing when he faced off against Connor McGregor. Now the arguement will be made that McGregor was inexperienced and Mayweather has years of experience behind his belt but i'm not saying this just because he won. Mayweather switched from defensive to offensive. That fight he played different and not becaude of confidence but because of knowledge of McGregor. Normally Mayweather would avoid his opponent but in this case he got up in McGregors face expecting McGregor to exhaust himself. McGregor did exactly that and near the middle of the match Mayweather got offensive and started trading blows and by then end McGregor has lost all energy just as predicted. Mayweather also proved experience is the biggest key to anything. A lot of people banked on McGregor winning because he was younger, faster, and stronger. While that is most certainly the truth together they didn't a hold a thumb to Mayweather's stamina or experience and knowledge of the sport. Mayweather is not in all means a bad boxer or one that should be shamed for how he fights. After all stepping into that ring is scary! Boxing isn't the pre-show beef of a UFC Match or the soap opera of a WWE sport it really isn't about putting on a show for the audience. Now this could be argued as an opinionated decision but it's about winning. At least in Mayweathers case! Some want the passion, some want the glory, some want the money, others want to be on top. All those increase by winning. Glory can be said depends on how you win but Mayweather still makes lots of money and has many many fans. I will put up the arguement 51 - 0 is definetly an accomplishment, nobody can say he only fought weak opponents after all he had a fight with Manny. Now I do wanna say I don't think he is the greatest overall boxer he definetly is lacking. I wouldn't even come close to saying he is my favourite or that I like him as a boxer or a person. However it can be said he is the best defensive boxer and will go down in history as one of the greatest. Again though everyone is entitled to their own opinion on the subject I know people will definitely disagree and try to say i'm wrong and point out the flaws in my arguement, but really I don't care. I just wanted to give my opinion and maybe give people some insight onto why I think this and maybe they will agree, or if anything learn something from what I stated here. ✌

Hagler never did what Duran did. 4 world championships in 4 different weight division. Ray did win in middle weight title from Hagler but he didn’t beat Hagler he stole it from Hagler. With 15 seconds left in each round ray would throw these wild flurries that looked good but never hurt Hagler. But it would win the round for ray. Ray was not a true warrior. He just wanted to win without fighting. The only war he was really in he lost. Duran kicked his ass all over the ring. And Duran had to gain almost 10 to move up in weight to kick his ass. Shit at least hearns would fight ray was so affair of Aaron Pryor he wouldn’t even fight him. He knows Aaron would kill his ass.

I would like to see Leonard because I saw another study showing seeming weakness`s that would lead to Mayweather beating Ray in a fantasy fight, I don`t if you`ve seen this study or what you would think of it, it would be nice to see something about all of their weakness`s, like the myth that Duran lost to fast crafty boxers and only won his first fight with Ray because Ray fought him on the inside. There is also a comment by a pundit announcing on a Hector Camacho title fight who turned to Ray who was a co-commentator that night and said someone told him "even when Sugar looks in the mirror he doesn`t see someone with the hand speed of Camacho!" Maybe you could show combo`s that counter that claim.

I'd particulary be glad to know more about Marvelous Marvin. Maybe not the best of the four, but he always had a strange style that fascinated me :) Plus his body, little round head on compact torso on long shanks was impressive to see in motion, his devastating hooks, short reach (he must had suffer in front of Hearns), his southpaw posture that he changed sometimes... A very talented yet unusual boxer. Anyway I'm impatient to learn about all of them, but if you could develop a bit on Hagler's personnality and style, that will be greaaat. ^^

Most fight fans (especially old school ones) say that Floyd isn't as good as these guys, well they're all naturally bigger except for Duran. The thing I can say about these 4 fighters is that they did'nt play it safe as far as who they fought, so I will say that they're braver, but better? , I guess we'll never know.

Mayweather didn't play anything safe. And none of those guys are any braver than he is. Cowards don't box for a living bruh. There are much easier things to do in life. No body forces you into a ring. I box and I know guys who wouldn't even go to a boxing gym. There is nothing wrong with that either. My point is they avoid it because it isn't in them. You are either a fighter or not.

He lost the ONLY fight with Duran that Duran was actually in shape for. After that fight, he spend YEARS ducking Duran, and only fought him when he knew there was no way for Duran to physically get into shape for the time. There is a video where he exclusively states this fact, waiting for duran to be horribly out of shape, and then give him the fight knowing he would have to "sweat it all off". After what Duran did to Moore, he waited even more years before giving him the 3rd fight, again knowing he was out of shape. That was Durans biggest enemy.. Himself. He would balloon up between fights, even sometimes getting up to 200lbs. But at the end of the day, POUND FOR POUND, Roberto Duran was the best of all time. Atleast in my opinion.

@@zzzhuh Nah. Lost to Hearns who had a full 12in reach advantage, already well outside his natural weight Went distance toe to toe with Hagler, who knocked out Hearns.... And was ahead on points in round 12, Duran was only the 2nd person to ever go the distance with Hagler..... And also beat Barkley whom knocked out Hearns twice. The only 1 who beat Sugar Ray, and whom also knocked out Hearns Had FAR FAR FAR more fights in his career than the rest of them, fighting until a MUCH older age(retired at 50 damn years old lol) He had over 3x the amount of fights Leonard had in his entire career. Hell leonard retired with only 36 damn fights, and had 3 losses and a draw..... He had almost double the amount of Hagler's fights. As well as Hearns's total fights. Duran was like 75-1 at one time lol when he was actually fighting in his best shape.... You also look at the Moore and Barkley fights, amazing showcases for him. You can have any opinion ya want, i dont care lol. But pound for pound, even with the huge negatives of his personal health and training issues, he has proven himself to me as my favorite P4P boxer ever. POUND FOR POUND in my eyes.
