Then what do you say to all the owner's of Chevy 5.3's that have the exact same issue? Look, engines are universally considered to be past their mechanical limits at 100k miles. I know this is annoying but the factory only has a legal obligation to make the engine last a certain amount of time. Almost every engine has some sort of problem as it gets over 100k miles. Ford 5.4 will eat up it's cam phasers, most of the OHC VVT engines will eat up their timing chains or phasers. If you want more than 100k miles out of your engine then be prepared to replace the parts that fail. A bad cam isn't a total engine failure.

@@1967davethewaveunless your a mechanic a new cam and lifters. Plus any other damage that may have occurred as a result of this cost nearly as much as an engine. You use to get 300,000 miles easily on a well maintained engine. With some fairly minor repairs of course. Buying a truck is like taking out a mortgage and they don’t last long. 100,000 has never nor should ever be the standard .
@1967davethewave Жыл бұрын
@@timg185 I am a mechanic and I currently work at a utility company. Our main vehicle is the Ford F550 with the 6.7 diesel. The early ones, from 2010 to 2012 were prone to dropping valve seats well before 100k miles which caused a catastrophic failure, the seemed to get that ironed out but starting with the 2017 or 18 models we've had a problem with the 6.7 eating lifters and destroying cams. But since you mentioned getting 300k miles let's go back to the 6.4 diesel from 2008 and 09, you were lucky to get 100k out of them without total failure, that's why Ford only sold them for a couple of years. What about the 6.0 diesel that came right before that? Well, it's very well known that without some pretty good upgrades like ARP head studs and pretty major work to the high pressure common rail oiling system the engines were unusable by 75k miles. From 2006 to 2012 GM produced the 3.6 "High Feature" V6 that is very well known to have timing chain failures at around 100k. Now in 2013 they supposedly corrected it but that's 7 model years of engines in everything from Pontian G6's to Cadillac CTS's. Go back a couple of years earlier and Chrysler was producing the 2.7 V6, and engine very well known to have massive oil consumption problems by 75k miles. Go back to the 1990's, have you ever heard of the Cadillac Northstar engine? They have head gasket failures at a rate of about 80% from 1995 all the way into the early 2000's by 100k or so miles. And these were put into high end Cadillacs. The repair was very expensive and it has devastated the value of all of the cars on the used car market. Sure, a well maintained 318 or Chev 350 or Ford 300 six will last 300k miles. But for every hero I can name at least 2 zeros.
@timg185 Жыл бұрын
@@1967davethewave you have just help make my point. Modern engines cost to much and are unreliable. Up until 2006 people made fun of Chevy because they used old tech. Meaning push rod engines. But that was design that had been around 100 years. It was reliable. If you had a bad lifter or a broken rocker arm. It didn’t destroy the entire engine. Trucks have $250,000 miles and still cost $25,000. Ford , Chevy and Dodge could all do better. They don’t care as long as the truck makes it through the warranty period. I don’t expect engine to run trouble free forever. But you use to be able to repair engines. Now your better off replacing the engine instead of fixing it. We pay to much for these trucks to have to deal with that.

However, if you've ever been around any forum or group of racing, muscle car or sports car enthusiasts, you should know that the term "motor" is universally used to refer to the powerplants in all cars, motorcycles, etc. Technically, the internal combustion engine is literally an engine because it is a heat engine. Technically, a motor is a motive device, such as an electric motor, not a heat engine. But if you've never heard anyone refer to the "motive device" in a Cobra or a Corvette as a "motor", then you're way out of touch with the accepted colloquial terminology. Weve had Chargers with the hemi in our police fleet, every one had to have the cam and lifters replaced. Here's what I got from my research; Under normal conditions, this problem is relatively rare in the hemi. But, in 2 classes of vehicles it is common and those being police service and oil field exploration. The techs I've read evaluations from say that in those situations the high amount of idle time leads to heat buildup in the lifters leading to failure of the roller bearings. They go on to say that the ECM's could be programmed for a extended idle mode at 1200 RPM and the lifters would never fail like that. This is all unofficial off the record stuff of course.

Yes, I agree. All the failures I have seen are on engines with high idle hours. The newer Ram trucks track both idle and driving hours, accessible through the EVIC. The last truck I replaced a cam and set of lifters only had ~22,000 miles on it, but over 9000 hours. About 7500 hours idling. So probably only 4 oil changes, with over 2000 hours on each oil change. This problem started around 2009 and went on to effect trucks until a change was made with the lifters around 2016 or so. Also, I don't hate Mopar. I own two Mopar vehicles and also own a Ford and a Japanese car. Every manufacturer has their issues and pro's and con's. I just made this video to explain the issue and show how to find it. I've done quite a few of these cam and lifter replacements. I started noticing very significant pushrod and rocker arm wear (in the cup where the pushrod meets the rocker arm; they wear against each other and both get chewed up). Sometimes the damage is immediately visible, but sometimes the end of the pushrod still looks shiny. If it still looks shiny, look at the end of the pushrod from the side and compare against the lifter end of another pushrod to see how much of the spherical shape has been worn down. There is very little preload on these lifters to begin with, so when a pushrod and rocker start to eat eachother, it doesn't take much wear before there is more lash than that small preload will take up. Not only does this lead to clattery valvetrain noise, but it starts pounding those needle bearings. I had a theory that this could be causing the lifter failures, but I've also seen lifter failures on motors that don't have any pushrod or rocker arm wear. Unfortunately I have to conclude that this issue is simply a ticking time bomb. Frequent oil changes and adding anti-wear additives back into your oil will help your chances, but I've also seen lifters fail on exceptionally well maintained hemis.
@alzaidi77394 жыл бұрын
FYI, Uncle Tony's Garage has two videos on this problem and says it's the angle of the lifters is too shallow to get oil to run down the barrel. Shallow lifter angle was a consequence of the raised cam. Also an oil gallery between the crank and cam blocks oil splash at low RPM.
The oil only can go down the barrel when revving above 1200 revolutions per minute, due to what you'd said about the angle of the lifters. These engines will last forever if they idle for short periods. They were not meant to be idling for long periods, as you stated in other words. A disclaimer should have been given on cars equipped with HEMI engines.

FCA has a bulletin to remove the VVT oil control valve under the intake manifold if lifter/ camshaft damage is found. If the oil control valve screens are plugged with debris the engine needs replaced. The worn/ broken needle bearings travel through the engine and go somewhere. Our company has very tight quality control standards. A lot of components are now made outside of the the vehicle manufacturer. From what I can see in this video is one of two scenarios. This could be a purchased part that Chrysler buys and installs or it is built in house. Either scenario is a result of a poor PFMEA. Thorough product design would have seen this problem from a country mile. We build many components in house and we also use purchased parts. I am not sure about a hemi, but on a Chevy, if this happens, hardened steel rains down onto piston skirts and can severely damage both pistons and cylinder walls. If the lifters are in line with piston skirts in a hemi, expect the same, and possibly having a worse failure on down the road.

As an engineer I would suspect that it's the hardening of those needle bearings. You can check that by cutting apart the bad lifter to see the bearings and a few of the good ones to see if any of them are in the process of failing (from the same engine). There are companies that try to force companies like Chrysler to do recalls. When you get your evidence together you could send your pictures etc. to the ( I think it is ) DOT & above companies to see if you can get a recall. I have a Chrylesr mini van that has over 230,000 miles on the clock. You should get more than that from a Cam.

My 2002 Chrysler T&C has the 3.8L pushrod V-6 with roller lifters, at 283K miles now, spec compression, and the heads have never been off. Only major problem was a cracked flexplate (common). I have read of a few similar camshaft failures on owner forums, but out of gazillions sold. More commonly, there was a problem with the rocker shaft posts cracking in earlier engines (3.3L late 1980's?), but was fixed by the late 1990's by a redesign adding more support posts to the heads. The same engine was had a RWD version used in Jeeps for about 5 years around 2010.

I worked for Chrysler in 1968 on to 1989,the second gen hemi came thru with 330# valve springs at wide open lift,the springs ate the cams within 13,000 miles regularly,this engine was designed for high performance use only,it was never to really be a street engine,they detuned it for grocery getting use,now I've been retired since 1998 and never touched another engine till recently,heard rumors of the new engines falling apart,in the camshaft area,so it bought a roller engine and took it apart and checked everything,as a ase senior master tech,i went at it,like I did on the job,first thing I found was the valve springs were anemic,85 on the seat and 208 wide open is ridiculous,and there's the problem,the engine I bought to check made it to 180k miles with the cam flaking,the valve springs are the problem on the early 2nd gen engine, the valve springs were to heavy ,now with the new engines they are way too damn weak,they will not return the valve to the seat properly,and that 's all I found other than the same old shit with the cam chain stretched as usual,so its back to the same crap as the 318-360 days of stretched chains past the 125k mile mark,just put hipo springs in your engines with new chains and gears at the 125k mark,suggest 125 on the seat and 300 wide open for street action,my opinion

Thank you Fred for the kind words I appreciate it! @@GearHeadsGarageChannel yeah I figured oiling would be involved. But I would like to determine the force on those roller bearings and the roller wheel itself. Chevrolet just before 1968 started experimenting with engines. Respecting the small blocks, they swapped the crankshafts from the 283 and 327 and created the 307 and the 302. All this required was to move the wrist pin on the piston. Then they created the 350 with a longer stroke crankshaft. I had a small journal 307 in a 1966 Chevelle that I suspected was one of the prototypes. Chevrolet in 1968 put out these new engines and at the same time increased the crankshaft bearing diameters. They were referred to as large journal cranks. Pre1968 were called small journal. I suspected it had to do with using a cheaper metal. I started noticing camshafts on 1968 and newer engines with flattened lobes and some lifters worn so bad there was a hole in the bottom of the lifter. This happened on both big block and small block. I suspect it was the same on the 6 cylinder, but I didn't mess with them. Once you knew what to listen to, you could hear it. Clearly your problem is bad lifters, but the cam lobe rounding has been around for quite a while. The Chevies I saw had the common hydraulic lifters.

@@bradzimmerman3171 I've owned 5 late model Hemis and not one has lifter clatter or ever wiped a cam. My 07 Ram has 209,000 miles and never been apart. It will be soon when I upgrade to ported heads, a Howard's camshaft and hp lifters. Any codes thrown by a faulty mds solenoid can fixed easily by shutting the mds off. That will help prevent lifter failure and blown engines

Same thing can happen in LS motors. Bought a 5.3 core motor to build, it had a failed lifter due to roller bearings also. Didnt get bad enough to gouge the cam but it did put enough material in the oil to take out some bearings

04-06 VW TDIs have the same issue with flat cams, the solution there is using a ZDDP additive in the oil.
@scottwheaton96895 жыл бұрын
yup,the motors need a motor oil with proper ZDDP/Zinc & Phos lvl at a min of 1300ppm and better yet 1450-1500ppm especially if the motor see's longer times/more mileage between oil & filter changes. ZDDP protects against scratching/ gailing etc in times of higher then normal engine/ oil temp and also better protects more aggressive cam lifter setup/profiles that have more then avg spring pressure/rates too which the majority of todays over the counter motor oils aren't properly formulated to do so with only 600-800ppm zddp on avg. Only issue is if the hemi uses/burns any oil the additional zinc/phos can prematurely foul the cat converter given enough miles causing emission issues & costly repair to replace the cat. I have seen this issue with older gen flat tappet & newer gen bit more aggressive roller cam & lifter setups when running todays oil with low zddp/zinc & Phos lvl's in either of those setups. It doesnt always happen quickly either,can take 50-70-90k miles but can happen 5k-15k-20k miles when running low zddp oil in hi perf setups uasing cam with more aggressive lobe design along with significantly higher spring rates too.

This was an amazingly informative video. Thorough and easy to follow for the non-professional. Own a '14 1500 w/5.7 Hemi. Developed the tick - no mechanics knew anything about it and it wasn't until a valve spring broke the other day that I stumbled upon the true meaning through this and other videos. 5 of the cylinders ended up misfiring - no codes thrown (strange). When we got it warm, only 2 were misfiring. Some other interesting theories/videos out there. Lubricity/additive issues were considered in one of the videos resulting in lifter valve getting clogged from synthetic (or bad/not often changed oil), leading to inadequate valve train lash, then of course bearings failing. Theory is thicker oil could affect valve clearance. Anyways thanks for the video - this one and others are very informative and we (I) am very appreciative for you and others taking the time to do these.

Honestly I usually only see vehicles after they have failed miserably. No one seems to care until they have to be towed. Routine maintenance seems to not be a priority for most and then they get upset at the cost of repair.

I work for a government agency that uses the chargers with the 3.6 liter and we have the same issue. The oil is changed every 4k miles. The problem has occurred as early as just over 50k miles and by 75k miles some vehicles have been in the shop 3 times for the same issue. It doesn't seem to matter how hard a vehicle is driven since almost every one of ours has had the same issue. We started using these vehicles in 2011. We have also been seeing the cooling fan motor come apart and going into the radiator. These failures are occurring durring the same mileage periods. It doesn't seem to be happening to every vehicle but it does happen pretty frequently. Durring one week a few months ago 3 out of the 10 vehicles on my shift went down for this problem . I don't know the exact part that is failing on the fan motor but it appears that its a quality issue. Driving a Charger now since 2011, i can say its not a bad vehicle. If Mopar made a few minor design changes and improved the material quality a little, this would be a great vehicle.

I'm wondering if adding zinc to the oil will help. Since they stopped putting zinc in the oil back in the early 2000's, people with flat tappet cams were losing their cam and lifters due to too much heat and pressue build-up and no protection from the modern oils. Zinc does an excellent job at protecting vital engine parts that experience high heat and pressure. I know they claim that it hurts the catalytic converter but does it really? I would still try using an oil with zinc already in it like Lucas Oil offers or buy an additive and pour it in the crank case. Something to ponder.
@wingracer16145 жыл бұрын
Zinc can be really good for high pressure, sliding metal to metal contact. You know like the kind you have with flat tappet cams/lifters. It would be nothing but trouble for a roller lifter. A quality full synthetic would be a better choice.
@hotrodray68025 жыл бұрын
Smokes your catalytic converter and oxygen sensors in 10,000 miles. Then it runs like crap and you can spend $1,000 to fix it.

I replaced a Hemi flattened cam over 40 years ago. Great to see they've got the problem fixed.
@maxmaximan89614 жыл бұрын
Lol.. good one.The problem with the new Hemi 5.7 L is that they changed the timing gear configuration.On the older 5.7 L engine the timing gear was responsible for splashing the oil up to the top of the engine via timing chain cover that extends to to the top front of engine lubing the cam shaft.The new confirmation fails to deliver at idle,there for starving the top end,cam shaft ECT of oil... But like I said lol to your post,I'm a 36 year auto mechanic.Ive never seen Dodge improve any of their FAILURES . Seems they never learned,seems either did the population.

I believe the 3 major truck producers have figured out how to build the engines to last just long enough. All of them have their issues. I had a 94 Ford that was close to 200k and had no major issues. It was still running great but had a small leak in the radiator. I let my cousin borrow it and explained to him to add coolant every 300 miles. Well he didn't and locked it up. I've been through 4 trucks since. Ford,Chevy,and Fiat. They all have their issues these days.

Just saw a vid on premature cam wear issues with the Gen 3's , it seems to be a lube problem , coupled with a lack of windage bathing the cam in a consistant flow of oil.. windage at low rpm doesn't have enough energy to bathe the cam as in a ford or sbc, as it's mounted much higher up in the block, due to unique valve train.. so no oil from the bottom..the oil is gathered in galleries just below the lifter bores and falls back into the valley...it was intended to bathe the cam lobes, but due to the angle , and lack of pressure, it simply misses the cam an falls right back onto the crank . once the oil pressure is up, and the oil is being circulated around the engine at sufficient volume , no problem.. Stop and go traffic, or putting to the coffee shop, and never seeing any rpm.. no good.. It's almost better to beat on the thing , or have a slightly heavy foot.. A.L is totally correct, I've just gone into a little more detail on the causes.. the windage issue can be dealt with pretty easily, a tray designed to maybe throw oil at the cam better may work, lack of oil from the gallery in the head? (this is not a volume issue it's more the direction the oil is falling from, not reaching the cam lobe at low rpm) is truly a black mark on chryco .. The could have re engineered those galleries to lube the cam better , maybe a little ramp to change the direction of flow, or divert the oil flow onto the cam somehow. They did nothing, and many customers got fleeced out of big cash..for babying their truck..etc.. I've seen guys use an oil fllter adapter for turbo lube supply, etc, one could pretty easily rig up something based off that, and run some piping up to the galleries, and spray it down under pressure, to keep the cam lubed...any engineering types that have a solution in mind, let me know, developing a kit would save hem owners huge cash down the line , some repairs are costing $5,000 or more.. great for Chryco selling parts, and dealer techs , but the customer ends up shafted for babying their truck..

Just have to wonder what other damage occurred while the bearings were falling to the pan
@GearHeadsGarageChannel5 жыл бұрын
Dont think they fell anywhere as a single piece...they got ground down to powder and drained to the pan. If the oil has a noticable amount of metal in it we check the rod bearings and look for damage. Usually everything is fine though unless you wipe the camshaft all the way flat.

Great video! It's not just the 5.7 Hemis. I just had the same lifter problem with my 6.4 SRT. One of the lifter bearings looked like it was "graded like cheese" and the oil control valve had metal shavings all over it; I only had some codes with one cylinder misfiring but I hear the ticking sound earlier for weeks. This isn't a minor flaw for an engine.
