Root flare…root flare….root flare. I will guarantee you that the root flare ion that tree is 2-4 inches below the top of the potting material. I can never understand why someone with this gentleman’s experience never mentions in his videos to remove all the top dressing until the flare is exposed. All the decaying lower bark and girdling root problems are because of this issue. I am a tree grower in Michigan and know generally what needs to be addressed when planting trees💪

One of our nurseries here in northeast TX told me to put 4 31/2' lengths of perforated pvc pipe about 4' from tree trunk & water tree from that to encourage roots to go out & down. Worked wonderfully for me! Never heard that before.

I always try to plant my plants in the right place but the maximum height has always bitten me. My 15' foot tree ends up being 30 feet and too big for the spot I pick and I usually have to cut them down after 15 or 20 years. 😢

Such a common thing, Carol. It's hard to think out that far to the fact that these small trees and shrubs at the time of planting will actually get that tall. I admit, it takes a lot of foresight and restraint to hold back from planting those now.

why wouldn't you just leave the bark protection on all year round until the tree is over 4"?

U should do a garden tour 😄

Wait, so you're telling me your deer will damage the trunk with their antlers -- but they won't eat the leaves and small branches?? Here in PA, we need to enclose the ENTIRE tree with a huge piece of 5-foot-tall hardware cloth, or they get totally destroyed.

So many trees get planted poorly. Such a shame seeing them steeply decline after 5 or so years for something so easily avoided.

Nothing better then planting a non native Crabapple tree, why not promote native tees
