I'm curious to know how you handle Christmas as someone who's a frugal financial minimalist. All the social pressure to spend on gifts etc. when you're trying to prioritise saving and investing. It's a pain. Would like to hear your philosophy mate. Maybe you could get a decent video out of it 👍

I have a passion for getting just the right gift for each person. I have a Google spreadsheet with the likes and dislikes for each member who will be attending Christmas (I have trouble remembering) which I update each time I learn something new about them. I have a dedicated shelf in my closet for Christmas gifts and whenever I browse thrift stores or the clearance sections and something I see makes me think of them, I buy and store it. My secret is to shop throughout the year -- ESPECIALLY right after Christmas, if you don't mind storing it that long, because I personally hate buying a bunch of expensive, half-thought-out gifts all at once. Maybe this gift cost me $1 but I added a personal touch with my woodburning pen, I monogrammed it with their name, etc. Use your interests to add your own touches as well.

I remember teaching myself how to make websites in the 90s when I was a kid, and the climate has really changed since then. Back in the day, it seemed pretty common to code your website from scratch. Nowadays, most people use templates. I didn't study web design (it's still just a hobby...), but when I was tasked to make a website for someone about a decade ago, I was disappointed to learn everyone was using templates. The coding part was the fun part, and it was like folks took all of the fun away by using templates, lol. But it also makes sense -- with constant browser updates and changes, you have to update your website to keep it running well with all the different browsers out there -- and that can be a big task. Templates also make website creation approachable for people who don't know HTML. Those who like the coding side of website building can create and update templates that can be sold to multiple people who don't know how to code (or even if they do know code, it makes maintenance easier because someone else is doing the template updates). It makes creating websites pretty easy! Anyone can do it, but even without the coding aspect, it's still pretty time consuming.

Hey graham just wanted to say thank you for being the best finance KZbinr. I’m 15 years old and feel so lucky for learning about finance at such a young age. I make a decent amount of money in the stock market and save every penny. I just look at the money come in because of your channel. I now don’t spend money on worthless garbage that can’t make me any more money in the future. I also realized how I could be doing more. The money I don’t have invested (I day trade and don’t put money into any index funds which I know realized just how bad that is) that just sits in my account does absolutely nothing for me. I now know that that money could be put in a Roth IRA collecting compound interest.I really wish they thought these things in school. Because of your channel I understand what a Roth IRA is, how real estate works, and of course how to budget from your millennial money videos😂 . Thanks to your channel I will get a credit card the day I turn 18, take my risks in the stock market now, and am about to get my own Roth IRA. THANK YOU GRAHAM

My family owns a landscape business that is primarily run between my father, my cousins and myself. (I.e. very similar to the people you hired) and I can say with 100% confidence that you shouldn’t take full responsibility for the mistake. You shouldn’t need to supervise and be overly specific. Any landscaper worth his salt knows that most clients don’t understand the ins and outs of landscaping and they don’t know how to be specific, and the results of your work should give confidence to the clients to not feel like they need to babysit you. The only mistake you made was going with someone who charged you an absurdly low amount. Generally you get what you pay for. 60% of the price.... 60% of the quality.

You could go to small claims court and argue it yourself (it’s not common to use a lawyer in small claims court) the cap is 10k so he could have recouped most of his money that way

Buying cheap clothes from H&M etc definitely makes sense from a financial standpoint, but you do have to consider HOW those clothes are made so cheaply and what kind of practices you are supporting by buying into fast fashion. Fabric can be very expensive, and sewing clothing takes time and is a pretty difficult skill to pick up... so it makes sense that ethically-made clothing will be expensive. However, if you are mindful about what you buy and learn to mend your clothes, you won't spend too much money on clothing in the long run. Money is a powerful thing and we should be mindful about what we support with it. Just some food for thought. Love your channel, thanks for doing what you do!

IT Manager here. $5k for a "fully-featured promo package" should have been a huge red flag! In Los Angeles, doing high-quality realtor/architecture photography for 5 properties ALONE could easily reach $5k. Certainly, there are plenty of mom-and-pop or etsy-type freelance options out there, but you almost always get what you pay for. Go cheap and be prepared to have to redo it with another freelancer...possibly multiple times. A "fully-feature promo package" in the LA area (including full website, one or two videos, photography on 5 properties and/or headshots, business cards, letter-heads, logo) would likely end up costing more around $40k - $100k if going with super-reputable companies in LA who guarantee their work and will get it done right the first, and only time. But, as Graham himself said, he was doing just fine without a website before, so he honestly could have just hired a photographer for a couple hours to get some quality pictures ($500-800), made an intro video himself (time), paid an independent designer to make some business cards then had them printed, and built a simple website on squarespace/wix/etc (time) and would have been much better off. Just my $0.02 ~

Second is fit, if something fits you off the rack amazing if not find a decent Tailor and get it fitted. Even a cheap suit will look like 1000 bucks when fitted. Lastly price If you go to a outlet like Hugo boss you can get a 1000 dollar suite for 300 and spend 100 on tailoring. If you’re on a budget a cheap suit that is tailored is still a good choice. But find a reputable tailor to make sure it’s done right.

SUIT TIP: (or genera shopping tip)- if you are shopping for a suit or other clothes you want to look nice, and you have little fashion sense, BRING SOMEONE ALONG WHO DOES!! Most sales people will not be honest if something looks good, especially if they can tell you have no idea what you want to actually look like. I’m my dad and brother still will always take my mom or I with when shopping for nice clothes

Reminds me of talking to my partners about metal roof vs shingles. Metal stone coated roof has a 50 yr warranty, and shingles (if you get the expensive ones) have up to 30 years--which equates to roughly the same price, but a few differences in installation (depending on a lot of factors). How I convinced them was this, "by the time the warranty on the metal roof runs out, I'll be 90 and either have sold or passed the business on to my kids, and that's if I even get to 90. We're getting the metal roof." They stopped arguing. LOL The only time I should have to worry about this roof, is if a tornado rips through here (which could happen). But, other than that, I shouldn't have to worry about it ever again and it will probably save us on insurance too. So, a little more cost up front, can save a lot in the end.

100% confirmation. As an ex-berlin developer I can tell from my own experience: don't waste ANY money on tailored suits, custom websites, expensive cars and even not for useless business cards. You ain't gonna need it to make profit. The only "thing" that generates money is YOU, not your business cards, suits etc. If your are smart sympathic person you don't need that stuff which enriches your financial risk. I'making 6-figure income without these things payed. despite I own 9 or 10 suits between 50 and 300 $, i did'nt wear them the last 8 years, so it didn't really matter if I bought them or not, besides the money spent on it.

Mild lower back pain is usually caused by being out of shape. Some brisk walking for 20 or 30 minutes three to five times a week and some yoga should fix that back.

The good news is that the suit fits you still! What's wrong with Nordstrom Racks? They have nice Tahari suits for less than half the full price. I'm sure they also cary the men version of it. Landscape story can be applied to a lot of home improvement projects. Contractors need baby sitting and they are pretty unreliable. Cheap stuff? Return return return ! We have a saying about old time leather shoes: we are too poor to buy cheap things. For the price you replace them, good leather quality out values the cheap bad quality ones.

I bought a 1984 BMW which broke 5 hours after the deal and I can't fix it for 4 months now. (I borrowed money to buy it and now I have to pay for a vehicle which I do not have money to maintain). Graham, seems like you haven't made any mistakes at all.

I’m sooo glad I didn’t fall for the expensive suit purchase. Just go to the mall and go to a place that does measurements. Pay $5-$10 to get measured or tell them you have a very important upcoming interview...they might do it for free Go to JCPenny, Burlington Coat Factory, etc. and buy a slim fit suit or regular fit suit using the measurements. I’ve never spent more than $200 on a full suit (jacket, vest, pants) and have had MANY compliments on my slim fit suits.

So as far as the last one goes here is a tip I learned from a mechanic. Buy the cheapest version of something first and if it lasts you great! If it breaks within X time then you use it enough to justify getting the expensive model. This keeps most things that you don’t need but think you do need cheap but at the same time you will end up getting quality things for what matters.

As a landscaper, yeah. Every time you're doing a big job, get a contract with EVERYTHING spelled out. Chances are if they're vague, then they don't understand everything and are trying to fudge the numbers. If they're decent people that you feel you communicate well with, you don't need to micromanage. If they're good, they'll ask you if they need clarification. Just stop by when they're beginning something and stop by at the end, just to make sure everything is good. Daily is good, but doing it hourly is reaaally annoying and you're probably going to get charged for that extra time you spend asking pointless questions.

Your friend with the website, he planted a seed of doubt in your mind, that's a trick marketers use nowadays. Sad it didn't turn out as it should've. I do agree a website helps with credibility but shouldn't cost 5k for all that.

@scprepper26724 жыл бұрын
I definately agree with buying the more expensive option upfront. It only takes 20 minutes to go a quick google/youtube search and figure where the best price point is for any given object, because there is also diminishing returns on super expensive stuff. As for the suit, check out teachingmensfashion. He shows you how to make cheap suits look expensive. A good suit can definately make you money, but the most important thing for how good it looks isnt the price tag, but the fit. Find a good quality suit on clearnace at a department store, and take it to a tailor. A cheap, tailored suit looks a million times better than an expensive suit that doesnt fit right.
