I hope this will help. I noticed that if it is 4/4, he uses DOWN DOWN UP-DOWN UPDOWN, then if it is 3/4 DOWN, UPDOWN UPDOWN is used. It works for me. Somewhat similar to how Nathan strums.

Sometimes our piano player is not able to be at church & i cant play the bass without him lol & don't know many gospel songs on guitar so im learning; & trying to learn some piano. I play bass by ear but guitar not as good, i can follow other people but when im the only one trying to follow a singer its not as easy, need a lot more practice at that. It's a Dsus4. It follows the technique of keeping the 1st and 2nd strings on the third fret for most of these chords which both simplifies and adds interest. He's offering the simple chord name without all the sus's, diminishes and augmenteds. (These chord names make it intimidating!) Just put your fingers where he tells you. Back to how he plays the D, he's using his index finger to reach the 6th string, 2nd fret. That's the bass note for the D chord on a standard tuned guitar. I wrap my thumb around the neck to do that. (You can also explore "Drop D" tuning to actually play a D note for the bass. KZbin it.)

You are not completely wrong, I am playing the same chords on the sheet but with some extra added. The C chord im playing is a shape that is easier in the key of G, and the D chord I am playing is a D/F#, if you play a regular C and D chord it should sound just fine playing along.
