In women's artistic gymnastics, Vault is the first event in the Olympic order.
It's the shortest exercise out of the 4 and it includes:
- a 25-meter run;
- the pre-flight phase, which refers to the abilities performed before the gymnast touches the vaulting table;
- the repulsion off the table;
- the flight phase, which is the skill performed after the hands touch the apparatus;
- and the landing.

Additional information: - In 2016, Hong Un Jong (PRK) submitted the Triple Twisting Yurchenko at the Olympics. She went for it in the final but fell, therefore she was not credited with the skill. The FIG gave it a 6.8 back then. In the 2017-21 Code, it would be a 6.2. But since no one has successfully performed it in competition, the vault has not been officially integrated into the Code. - Simone Biles is currently training a Yurchenko Double Pike, so I have a feeling this video will not age well 😅 - If you have footage of the Tshukahara 2 1/2, please share it with our community here :) The only footage I could find was from Monica Rosu, but it was a fake video.

This video is already outdated as Simone has already not only trained but performed on television the Yurchenko double pike. Several gymnasts have trained this vault, such as Mckayla Maroney, but Simone is not only taking this vault from training but landing it easily.

@@murasakino101 The "Thomas Salto" wasn't just a "men's move." But after a female athlete was badly injured after being pushed into by her coach it was eventually banned (although it took a few years). Banning the move was easier than giving the athletes agency! It was last performed in women's gymnastics in 1992. It wasn't banned from men's gymnastics until 25 years later in 2017.

It is common thought in competitive gymnastics that this vault as well as her double double off the beam are extremely unvalued considering the difficulty. People in the know are thinking that because she performs them with relative ease that is is being undervalued. Which is cra cra because no other woman is even attempting them in training let alone in competition

Yes. It was downgraded to below its actual difficulty relative to other vaults because they wanted to discourage people from trying it, due to the potential for injury. They should score based on DxE rather than D+E, to keep people from doing unduly difficult material for their ability.

Ummm RIGHT?!?! I seriously would LOVE to know if Simone can do that vault? (Or would love to see even some practices videos of her trying it into the foam pit- since it DOES have such a dangerous reputation & since it's NOT even worth any more than what she CAN do& land, there's no point for her to even attempt it & risk injury- but man! I still wanna see her TRY!) I get SO EXCITED though when I DO seen a gymnast in the Word or Olympic vault finals even having the guts to go for it!!! In the last couple Olympics (and excuse me if I get some of these details wrong! I'm NOT a gymnast& have only really started becoming more of a "fan" over the last few years- I've been an equestrian/3-Day Eventer, Jumper& Dressage rider for 25yrs a "MY sport of choice!" The 1st I'm thinking of was a very pretty young black girl from the Dominican Republic(?) who tried that vault & SHE CAME DAMN CLOSE to landing it! and friggin Oksana at her, what- 6th Olympics in London (again-??? Was it Rio, or at Worlds? Sorry!) & She didn't really even come very close to landing it on her feet... BUT, just the fact that she even ATTEMPTED IT- and at her AGE- Is BAD-ASSSS MOMMMaa! Plus, the way she rolled out of it& hopped up to salute the judges without missing a beat absolutely should've gotten her some bonus points!!! Hahaha. And then the one I can recall trying this vault & coming the CLOSEST to truly landing it right was that INCREDIBLE young lady from INDIA of ALL PLACES?! Dipa K-something- at the Rio Olympics I think?! That girl is an ICON! I sooo wish she would have medalled 😥 which she maybe could have if her other vault had been harder/better? Since she LAND the Prodounova on her FEET!!! they just had to do like, SUUUPER slo-mo replays to see if her lil' tushy Actually TOUCHED that stinkin' mat or not& unfortunately it did. Simone stuck an amanar (twice? can't remember), has top 2 best cheng, nearly stuck a 6.4 vault twice, and is training another vault that will be top 3 in WAG. And i haven't mentioned her medal count on this event. She is technically the greatest on this event, personal preferences aside. It's not even a debate.

I completely agree, and people McKayla Maroney is the best. The reason I don’t agree with them is that Maroney doesn’t have nearly as much consistency as Biles, and Simone does a Cheng and even her own vault, while McKayla only did a Round-off Half-on full twist off as her second vault, which has less difficulty than Simone’s second vaults. Biles is and will always be the GOAT.

@@ismaelpedroza7918 yeah, also Maroney’s team final vault wasn’t even a stick. For it to be stick, she needs to have a controlled landing. She stepped out of it awkwardly and then saluted the judges. Two tenths were taken off there. Also, in the flight phase of the vault, you can clearly see a weird hip angle as she turns. That’s a deduction too. The fact that she got .267 of a point of deductions is actually pretty generous. The judges now would take at least .3 off on that vault. Simone’s 2015 national championships vault should’ve been a 10 and she has done that multiple times like 2015 American Cup 2016 national championships, and 2019 world vault EF.

@@dakshbadri The reason Maroney's famous Amanar is the exemplar is more than just scoring merit. She got a higher altitude than other top gymnasts, and that adds a lot to the visual appeal, even though it isn't scored. Biles is technically excellent, but her vaults don't have the "wow" factor that one did.

Simone Biles was injured from doing the double pike during trianing a month ago. It's ironic for her to defy the recommendation of the gymnastic board and in doing so disrespect all those experts in the sports. This will not be the first time the board bans a move (Thomas salto in men so don't say anything about being sexist) if it gets banned eventually.

If you want to see a "Handspring with double front salto tucked" (which is what a "Produnova" actually is) watch MEN'S VAULT. In elite MEN'S GYMNASTICS, where it is called a Roche it isn't that rare, in fact more difficult variations which add twists exist in men's including the Dragulescu and the Zimmerman.

I’m still expecting the code to recognize the biles beam dismount at a more appropriate level-at least an H, maybe an I. The reason giving it a c level was it was dangerous. I believe give biles credit she has earned. Then if the Olympic committee decides too dangerous, then ban it, but don’t discount Biles’ skill with the low rating

I really don't like that it was labelled as "too dangerous" and therefore given a lower difficulty level. Obviously it is dangerous but danger is just part of gymnastics, if someone doesn't like danger they shouldn't do gymnastics.

But the Biles on BB is a H (I agree, it should be a J or at least an I). I don't think anyone that can't do a proper, fully rotated and high chest full-in would ever attempt do go for a Biles. It doesn't make any strategical sense as the deductions would most certainly erase any advantage the skill brings in terms of points. This is just FIG undercutting the evolution of the sport.

You can’t forget that Dipa Karmakar did the Produnova at Rio 2016! That deserves special mention. After that though, sadly she injured her knees and was thus unable to participate in Tokyo 2021. She came fourth last time and I was sure she would have won a medal this time …

I have a feeling that shortly after Simone Biles competes her Yurchenko double pike, someone else is going to attempt a Yurchenko double tuck shortly after. It would not only be a slightly easier vault (although still insanely difficult), but it would also be named after the first person who does it. We may possibly see some women training vaults like Tsukahara double tuck or Prudonova half-out (Dragulescu in MAG). Simone is pushing the sport forward by successfully landing the Yurchenko double pike, and it's proven that these types of vaults are viable for other female gymnasts to attempt. Hopefully in the next quad (or triennial since we lost a year) someone will finally land the TTY. I'm also hoping that introduction of some of these newer vaults will encourage some of the older vaults of good difficulty (Prudonova, Tsukahara 2.5, Biles, Yeo, Amanar, Double Twisting Tsukahara, etc) to become popular in order for gymnasts to remain competitive. The double twisting Yurchenko and handspring 1.5 should be heavily downgraded at this point.

In tsukahara vaults, it's actually a quarter turn onto the table, not a half. It's a roundoff entry as opposed to a backhandspring from a roundoff on the runway or a front handspring from the board.

This video gave me a lot of insight into how the scoring has changed since Beijing 2008+London 2012, I didn't know that the FIG had worked to balance out the scores of the 4 events. I thought they were just downgrading to downgrade as they'd done after the 1992 quad when the perfect 10 became impossible to achieve. Now a lot of things make more sense with scoring! I really appreciate this info!

That is normal for salto moves. That's why you hear people say "Double-double" and not "Silvas". Describing the skill actually explains to laypeople watching what's actually happening.

The Biles & Produnova vaults were absolutely nailed.🎖️ As a fan of Gymnastics for many years, I remember seeing some of these vaults fairly often back say.....30+ years ago. Respect to Gymnasts who are able to achieve such perfection in this amazing sport.❤️

Question: Why would a gymnast do a BHS + turn onto the vault instead of just doing a fwd handspring? Does the BHS give more power than a front handspring?

It should be like it was in the 2013-2016 code, Rudi 5.8, Amanar 5.9, Cheng 6.0. There was a better mix of those vaults back then but now we only see Cheng and Rudi, so I think Tsuk 2/1 could be 5.7 too

MD-722 sorry I was unclear, I was saying that I liked in the 2013-2016 code that the Rudi/Amanar/Cheng were all 0.1 apart in that order, not the absolute values, and I think Tsuk 2/1 could also be in that progression
