Speaking of trades, I remember when Mike Ditka traded all his draft picks to the redskins to move up in order to draft Ricky Williams. The redskins had literally two draft classes worth of draft picks, and they SOMEHOW failed to become a relevant team for the long term future. Love seeing good things happen to Dan Snyders team

I dont know if Elway to the Raiders would have changed a ton for them. When the Raiders moved to LA they were already a very good team, and won the SB in LA in 83. I guess it would have created some longevity there though, since the Raiders went through a ton of QBs in the late 80s and 90s, when Elway was with Denver

Elway was also almost a Chargers. I remember San Diego was cheap as hell and didn't want to pay Dan Fouts. At the last second they gave Fouts his money and the Colts made a horrible trade because the owner got scared. That said Chris Hinton was a really good guard.

The part of the McCarron trade you didn't mention is it's believed that Sashi Brown purposely sabotaged the trade. He claims he didn't, but it's widely believed he did not want McCarron and the coaches were deadset on acquiring him. HC Hue Jackson had worked with him in Cincinnati.

While I admit that TO would have been a bad fit for Baltimore, and just delaying the inevitable roster blowup that we needed, I think that the 49ers got hosed. They had a chance at a 2nd rounder and had to settle for a 5th rounder and some player who I don't think worked out. When you make trades, you always want draft picks back, getting players back is a suckers deal.

A video on poison pill contracts would be sweet. I remember when the Vikings signed an RFA left tackle from Seattle. Forgot the guys name but the contract was massive - something like $75m. But to ensure the Seahawks didn’t match the offer and retain their all-pro LT, the Vikings included a provision that if the player played 8 games in the state of Washington in the next season, the entire value of the contract became guaranteed money. Seahawks cried fowl to the league office, and the ruling was that the poison pill was okay (!). Seattle then signed WR Nate Burleson (LOL) from the Vikings to try and get revenge.

That Gronk trade with Detroit would have been in 2019 and was NOT illegal. It was called off, because he retired. Also, the Patriots did NOT get another year out of Gronk, because he DID take his ball and go home. He sat out in 2019! He unretired after the season and forced the trade to Tampa after Brady had already left and signed with the Bucs.

Actually, the Elway trade was the Bears trading their sixth pick to the Raiders for some players which included Howie Long. Can you imagine Howie Long on the 85 Bears? Rozelle was short-sighted because it would have been Elway to LA even though Rozelle hated Al Davis. A thing that bothers me is Davis was working on this deal but was too busy when the Raiders could pick Marino instead Don Mosebar though in fairness Mosebar was a three-time Pro Bowler. Also, where's AB to the Bills? AB threw a bitch fit when he found out he was going to Buffalo.

Wow I never knew Howie Long almost ended up on the 85 Bears! That would be been insane! I do have to correct you on the AB Bills trade though, that was never a done deal. The Steelers and Bills had discussions about AB but it never got even close to agreeing on any trade. Ian Rapoport jumped the gun big time and he was the only high profile reporter to say a deal was done. I remember this because I'm a Steelers fan and was watching it go down on Twitter! That's probably why Five Points didn't pick it if I had to guess.

That's why Anquan Boldin and Steve Smith worked out here. They wouldn't put up the crazy stats that they could get elsewhere, but they were happy playing an important role to the team. Just because you're not putting up 100 yards a game doesn't mean that your presence won't help the offense by soaking up defenders.
