is there a chance that the unedited videos will be on patreon? or at least versions that are not cut after every sentence? probably just me but that is extremely distracting. otherwise I think you are an incredible player and would love to watch more but I'm not sure I can get over the zoom after every sentence and no pause between. I don't mean any offense I'm just saying it's hard for me follow sometimes.

Thank you so much, I have played for years but never really learned any theory, mostly tabs and by ear, which is fun, but I wanted to write better songs, your lessons are AMAZING, I am so blessed to have stumbled on to your page, I have learned a lot and a very short period of time, it isn't just for Metal, these lessons apply to everything, thank you and I hope you are staying safe.

Hello Bernth ; at the end of this month I'll have one year of guitar pass through my hands . I have not learned a song yet ( by choice ) . Too much to write here . Last weekend I played riffs and bar chords off the cuff for two different friends at different times. One called me a rocker and the other said he didn't like the tone . The second guy , I laughed with also and told him someone must have sold me bad tone wood . Just happened to find you today . And I Subscribed ;) I'm now thinking about not learning any Songs until my second year of practice . Excellent Advice given , saved and will be taken . Thank you . Cheers from Canada .

@@jahyralvarado676 of course not, but it comes down on how quickly you learn, you really can spend 10 years doing this, but in terms of information itself, it physically impossible that some amount of the SAME information would be bigger in 70's then in 2021🤣 I think he just meant that it wasn't really accessible that easily back then (or people were more stupid, I don't know, I wasn't even born back then...)

@@Psevdonim123 players were definitely not more stupid 😂 without those 70s players (and students) guitar would've died out around 1980 when keyboards got popular. The things you choose to emphasis in these videos is a goldmine--absolutely the best guitar education/guidance I have seen. It's easy to focus on the wrong things, but everything you mention is essential to getting the most efficient growth in playing (and improvising!) comfortably. Thanks, Bernth!

Well put William. I've been playing many years by ear. It was a long road. There was no internet in the 1960s thank God or I'd have just quit LOL. We need a bit of both skills for sure. Chords, theory are like tools in our arsenal. Or you wind up like alot of us. Good players but illiterate nimrods. With a do over, I'd have broke up my time invested differently. Primarily I think we all wish to play our favorite songs & styles we love. Then play with like minded people. The more we know, the more fun we have in the long run. I can play like 10,000 songs in many styles by ear. IT'S alot to know. I think your on the right track. Best advice: Have a friend that plays well help you pick out a decent instrument that plays well. Ibanez are great for the $. Then a decent amp. Like a fender mustang 2 with a wide range of sounds. I got my recent set up for about 300$ at my favorite pawn shop. The guy that runs it is an excellent player. Knows his gear ECT. That was very helpful. He likes slim thin fret boards. Being a bassist. Aspiring guitarist, I preferred a flat, wide fret board for my fat stubbie fingers. But the quality of the pick ups are VIP. And a guitar that will stay in tune very very VIP. How it looks, for me wasn't as importatant. P.S. watch Steve Vais 7 min video at guitar center where he explains all this & alot more. Very inspirational/ helpful. IT'S alot of work on the front end my friend. Don't let anyone tell you different. It just is. You can do it, if you put in the time & work, you can easily teach yourself. I did. A year or 2 of dedication & DISAPLIN, you'll be rollin!! Enj brother.

These octave triangles are a good start. Next see that there is a quart between each pair of strings (excepting the major third between g and b). Knowing this and playing consciously will give you many more shapes for other intervals. Ultimately you will be able to do the unconceivable, constructing chords on the fly. I know. It happened to me. 😎

A few points. These aren't tricks, this is how you put in the work to be great (but I know you know that). My second point is that I was waiting for "Step Whatever: Buy My Book To Know The Real Secrets" like every other guitarist out there but it never came. Thank you for not being a used-car salesman with music theory and gatekeeping everybody out of the good stuff. This is exactly what I'm working on after years of "improvising" without having a clue what I was actually doing and it took me several years and teachers to get in to a lesson plan that actually wanted to teach this stuff. Thank you so much, Bernth!

I think when it comes to sidereading there is also a important skill where you want to be able to substitute power chords on different strings so you can minimize neck movement. For example playing the A power chord on 5-7 or 0-2. I think this skill really shows its benefits when you can do this on the fly to improve your efficiency.

I understand the simple things but when you get into fifths and so on I don’t know what they’re called but I have an ear for the exact note and play it because it sounds right. I also use a pitch pedal to created the note I need even though I don’t play the note I can create it! I’m more of a David Gilmore, Robin Trower, Steve Vai and Satriani kind of person but I still don’t know what most of the notes are. here is a shortcut on the scale thery i figured out the hard way and no one ever mentions it only saw 1 person in 40 years break it down . if you learn lets say the major scale in C (c ionian) on the 8th fret which is first position for c major scale there are 5 positions the second position c major uses half of the finger pattern of the first position c major all the fretted notes closest to the bridge are now the ones you fret with the pointer finger 3 rd position use half of the 2nd position fingering and so on till iyou have lapped 5 positions and repetes at c 1st position pattern octive . so first pos is ionian major it is also the key of A dorian all the c major positions are key of A dorian and all key of A dorian are key of C major . they each use the exact same finger pattern which is C major five positions or is it A dorian five positions oh yeah its the exact same and the fingering is the same dorian is the rock blues sound scale and major is the country sounding scale but they are the same fingering and only sound like country or blues because of the key they are played in you play blues a scale and some one playing C country its gonna be country as shit now the A dorian is fingered at the fith fret and uses the 5th position C major pattern or is c major 5th position useing the dorian A first position pattern yep cause they all exactly trhe sqame scale you play 5th position C major (or any c major) to key A blues gonna sound hella blues as shit this is the relative minor count up 3 from relitave minor get major use same 5 positions same fingering no difference same frets all that shit what changed the sound "the key ". play in c is major play in A is a minor all the modes work this way aeolian dorian phrygian all of em with c major its easier to see 5th note is A cdefg A if you play c scale start on a note it is now the relitave minor dorian in A if you start on D its D locrain still c major so you only have to learn the major scale in the 5 positions and you allready know all the other modes these are r4elitave to the major scale in this example but it works no matter which mode you are familure with because they are relitave to each other if you only know the rock pentatonic scale in a 5th fret so now they playing country in C you all good you in C major count up 3 abc that major if the playing in G country 3 down pentatonic blues scale g f E ahh play it in the open e position country ass hillbilly instantly if you look up modes you look for the major pattern in each mode you know the relative major . so nice to know bla bla you dont have to know the names or the distance relative at all you just have to know is you are allready playing that shit you just in the wrong fret or position for the key mind blown yet just slide that shit till it sounds right and stick to your pattrern of the 5 positions can start 1st position anywhere so now you can play any mode in any key anywhere on the neck cause you learned the 5 positions in 1 key then you just slide it up an down till has the sound you lookin for . why they dont teach this shit i dont know you think jimmy page sits down and says hmm im gonna rip a phricganinto adorian with a flair of mixolydian then back to the blues doriaqn to tie it all togeather fk no he just stays in the five position pattern shape and smashes it around as long as it lands on the right mode in the key at the sweet spot it all good he just rippin through modes do ya think bucketheat and pri=mus invented new shit there is only the one shit and slight variations built upon it look a trumpet only plays one note at a time is bound to a natural key C yet can play in any key they not changintg the notes on that thing it only plays a a# bc c# d d# ef f# g g# still plays any mode and key cause they all use the major scale you just start on a different note e minor is g major g minor is b major a minor is c major thay all use the major scale in start in diff fret or play blues scale 3 frets down from there or whatever "Scale" only one you are used to fingering wannq sound spanish play your scale in a different fret slide it around till it sounds spanish and fret it in that position country lead sounding like bluesy shit down 3 frets it now country O.OI yeah im dyslexic so spell this :P \ this becomes obvious if you draw all the c major scale notes on paper for the neck to the octive now slide it up to e position it e major but look at the 5 pos e major it on the web it dorian oh look at dorian scale 3 up it major they are all the modes at the same time if bands were playing all the modes qround you at the same time you would be jamming with all of em if your position key is in the right fret c major allways fretted same way same frets if playing DIFFERENT MAJOR KEY SAME PATTERN DIFFERENT FRET not playing c major frets so c would be a different mode relative to g major so you have ta slide your position pattern to reflect the sound type you want then rip a hillbilly slide it down 3 FRETS OH blues , slide it AGAIN mixolydian UNNNMMM go back OK country ASS RIP

As someone who went through all of this just over a year ago, I've thought on it quite a bit. Pick a key, like C: CDEFGAB. Find the 3 root notes of major chords (CFG), then their relative minor notes (ADE), and the 7th (B). Find the different nearby ways to relate them, like open strings EAD to 3rd fret GCF, or 6th/5th strings A(6)D+E(5) to C(6)F+G(5) and their octaves and the B between them. Then learn basic triads, and say the notes. Notice that every chord is just 2/3rds of the chord before or after it in thirds. CEG EGB GBD BDF DFA FAC ACE and back to CEG (that's C, Em, G, B°, Dm, F, Am). Then try adding extensions (2, 4, 7, 9, 11, 13), but don't sweat this yet, just get the 7ths and maybe grok the intervals. Find these entire arpeggio patterns across the entire fretboard and note that it is just the CAGED system embellished with a few different arpeggio paths. Learn the basic CAGED system if not already known. It is simple. Say the notes and recognize their interval (root, third, fifth) as you do. This really makes things easy. Learn the simple 3 notes per string pattern for all 7 notes. There are only 3 different patterns between the 7 notes in the diatonic (12/24 keys. Circle of 5th/4ths). This is super easy and this builds crazy speed easily with a bit of hammers/pulls/legato. Note that other exotic scales are harder in 3nps (harmonic, melodic minors and such), but you'll get to them. See each note as 3 sets of notes, so A (in C key) is known as FxGxA, GxAxB, and AxBC (x = open fret). Now, extend the 3 notes per string to the nearest 7 (like ABC to ABCDEFG). These are your modes (diatonic). ABCDEFG (Aeolian), BCDEFGA (Locrian), CDEFGAB (Ionian), DEFGABC (Dorian), EFGABCD (Phrygian), FGABCDE (Lydian), and GABCDEF (Mixolydian). All of this repeats infinitely around your guitar, you'll never be lost anywhere on your fretboard. Then, learn to target the notes of the chord in the background and oscillate between them and flavor notes (the other scale tones not in the chord) as you see fit. Then learn to play the modes 'out of key' or throw in blues notes. On modes, note that there are only 3 Major modes (diatonic keys) and 3 'normal' Minor modes (and the 7th, a minor with a diminished 5th). So, switching between major or minor modes involves only small changes. /Summed up as much as I could. Happy guitaring!

So I have a question. If you learn all this in standard tuning. How do you know where everything is if you drop tune? It might be a dumb question, maybe its because I have not fully learned this yet. But that has always made me wonder how you know where you are on the fret board, being everything is tuned down.
@williammorris7895
@williammorris7895 3 жыл бұрын
Generally you can just shift everything. For example, E-flat tuning is just each string down by 1 semitone, so all the notes move up 1 fret. In D-standard, each string goes down 2 semitones, so each note moves up 2 frets. In these tunings where each string is altered equally, the patterns remain the same. ....... Drop-D (or any tunings with a further dropped string) is different because you're changing the interval between the strings. In this case, you just have to think about how you changed the interval and how you'd need to change the patterns accordingly. (In drop D, just slide everything on the low-e string up 2 frets). Hope that makes some kind of sense.

Excellent! A piano teacher taught me that Chords C-F-G are major in quality and Chords A-D-E are minor in quality and B is augmented which gave me a basic understanding of structure. For example if you want to make a minor chord a major you raise the 3rd and vice versa.
@SpiderBatProductions
@SpiderBatProductions 3 жыл бұрын
If you're speaking in terms of the diatonic system in the key of C then yes, C,F,&G are major, while d,e,&a are minor, however the b is diminished. It functions the same way that the leading tone functions, as the highest point of tension before the scale resolves. If you were in the key of F, your major chords would be F,Bb,&C, minor would be g,a,&d, where e is the diminished chord. It's all in the circle of fifths.

@Adrian J If you feel pretty confident in your rhythm playing, like you have the ability to play most rhythms you hear in any given song, then I assume you have a pretty good idea of the notes on the fretboard. If that is the case, I would recommend starting out with learning the A minor pentatonic scale. It's a great starting point for beginning your journey into leads. There are loads of vids on how to master this scale. Then move to the C major scale. Once you start getting comfortable with it, you'll start to see how to move these notes around using patterns that keep you playing using only the scale notes. Once you are capable of doing this and understanding it, you can really dig in and begin to learn and create your own licks and tricks to help you develop your own individual sound and feel! My helpful hint for you is to 1.start out slowly and progress into speed. 2. Always practice with a metronome at a comfortable pace. 3. Always try to be better than you were the day before. 4. Focus on feeling what you play, shredding is so much fun... so much fun, but it's just noise if you can't make it flow in a practical feel to the accompanying music you're shredding over! Hope this helped, good luck and welcome to the shredders world mate!!!\m/\m/

Understanding scales make life soooo much easier. Once you have understood how the scale is build, you are never again lost on the fretboard. "Key of A minor and I'm currently on an E, what comes next?? Oh yeah, F and G, so one half and then one wholestep, easy. And then slide in the root A, awesome! " It made my playing soooo much easier and instantly boosted my knowledge of the fretboard by magnitudes.

I had lessons young in both piano and guitar but it is exactly as you said - mechanical memorization without understanding. I'm like 60% through the process you described and I'd reckon that how you've described the mentality and approach to understanding music on the guitar is SPOT ON. When I started teaching myself, I just practiced shapes and scales to gain a relative understanding of intervals and the overall construction of the 7 modes. I'm breaking into chords recently, but I've needed some direction on chord construction pulling from the available notes in the key -- THANK YOU. This video will prove to be so so so useful because you explained it in a way that makes sense given all the practice I've put in.
