The $500 40K Army Challenge - How many factions can still be called AFFORDABLE?

There's also some minor editing errors sprinkled throughout, but it's still a miracle there was time for this to get made in the first place. If you want to do 2000 points every time for $500 USD? Deathwing Terminator Army, Belial and 40 Terminators will set you back $509 ($60 a box and $29 for Belial). Technically you don't need the extra 5 terminators (or Belial). You can also do whatever loadouts you want, make all the characters. Make Belial & a Strikemaster I believe they're called now. You can just get 8 boxes for $480 USD then just convert Belial and the other terminators out of the models. 6x basic 5 man deathwing squads, with loadouts of your choice (or Knights as they're more expensive points wise). Then a 5 man command squad. Leaves you 5 terminators to make into an Apothecary, Champion, Ancient, and Belial + Strikemaster. Which will easily set you 2000-2100 points even with the points drops from the recent update they will do. It's also not bad play wise as well as entire army is wound on 4+ only. Deep Strike re-rolls to hit, all 2+ 5++, objective secured, and some other nonsense Dark Angels get as base rules. Shame you guys missed them as it's the best way to price Marines to get to 2k. Benefit is you don't HAVE to paint them bone as there are the easier to paint successor chapters too, and you have a low model count army of 41 models with quite a bit of poseable potential and uniqueness between each model as you can use the knight pieces to spice up some of the more basic terminators. With plenty of heavy weapon variant and being Deathwing can mix/match close combat and shooting squads in one. Vanguard Detachment, take the Deathwing Strikeforce bonus so you get +3 CP as well. So at 2k games you get 15 CP before you start buying relics etc. My only main gripe is that you can't get terminator chaplains on the website still as GW removed the old metal/resin one and they only released a limited edition one a few years back which is crazy expensive on the 2nd hand market. As DA's have special terminator chaplains which makes a great secondary HQ to Belial.

It’s unlikely you’ll see this but your wrong regarding death guard. 9 myphitic blight-haulers ($27*9) 3 blightlord terminator squads ($60*3) and Chosen of Mortarion ($65) is 2010pts on the table so long as you kit the Blightlord terminator to max and use the deathguard ‘champion’ as a deathguard chaos lord you have an army for $488! Using the MUNITORUM FIELD MANUAL 2022 MK II point values.

@@thepoorhammerpodcast I understand your hesitation regarding MBH because no one actually uses them not since 9th Death Guard codex but if you can remember back in the beginning of 9th at 100pts each MBH were completely broken which is why GW dropped a an exterminatos level nerf on them upping their points to 140pts each but we have finally come full circle and they are back to 110pts now (which is what they should have been from the beginning) and with Arks of Omen changes I expect we might see a lot of mechanised imperial guard armies in which case we MBH will be very much needed not least because Belching Fumes Stratagem makes them extremely difficult to shifted (that’s the one that reduces the number all range attacks against them by 1).

Honestly, checkout the alternative model from stationforge (the scavanger) its one part with GW model, and you can have pack as cheap as 1€ per miniature, 2€ for elite 3 to 8 for HQ and heroes.. 15 to 20 bucks vehicles and even 50 bucks knights Sure you won't be welcomed in official tournament I guess 🤷‍♂️

It definitely isn't this bad if you collect them over time. Get one box on a sale, and by the time you assemble and paint it, order the next one you want. I was able to split a starter box with a friend, that's a good affordable way to try it out and see if you'd be into it or not

Don't listen to the other 2 above me- that will also make you lose money, just get a 3d printer and call it a day. Entire armies will cost you 100$ for the resin and you will save QUITE the headache since all of these models are unpainted- so not alot would change if you bought the unpainted models or the 3d printer.

Except it will be your new full-time profession perfecting running your 3-D printer sourcing files supporting files and removing thousands and thousands of islands through thousands and thousands and thousands of frames… and removing them one by one. I have three 3-D printers and have been into the hobby for 3 years now and if you value your time at even a nickel an hour you can pay for the Warhammer armies and save untold amounts of time. Then again learning to assemble models and remove their imperfections, fill gap drill, gun barrels, and paint them to an acceptable level is a whole other profession on its own. Because I am insane I recommend doing both like me!

You guys missed out on Chaos Space Marines. 30k Age of Darkness box is like 310. This gets you 40 marines you can bash into chaos marine legionaries. 10 cataphractii terminators for either chaos terminators or whatever specialist ones. A spartan that imo 100% could be proxied as a landraider, 2 preators-one with sword one with ax and a Contemptor dread that could be a "helbrute" If you run the Praetors as Chaos Lords I get 1750 pts. Leaving you 190 to play around with, maybe grab a Start Collecting demons or Chaos Marines for mixing and matching bits to make the 30k Mk 6 look more warpy. Edit : it's perfect for iron warriors if you can find 40 budget mk 3 heads

So I have a few comments because personally I thought the count of armies would be higher until Ive seen some of the US prices. Not too long ago I started Chaos Knights and I got there with 400... Euro. Some of the pricing is pretty insane. The Votann stuff really caught me off-guard. Like 80$ sagitarius which is a 50€ kit, all the elite options being 60$ MSRP. Even after conversion you pay like 25% on top of everything. And at least here in germany it is pretty common to get like 10% discount on things. 8 Baby Knights and 2 Big Knights which is far more Points, if ordered through an online-retail LGS is 440€ - Free shipping - Tax included. Your Grey Knights Buylist is straight up 400€ MSRP, after conversion 428$

Thanks to this video and a few others of yours, I finally went to a local hobby shop, and paid MSRP for a Rhino. I'm just kidding guys. Put down your guns. But I did go to the shop, and I bought the introduction kit, with snips, brush, 5 paints, 5 space marines, 11/12 tyranids, a rulebook, a map placemat, and a few cardboard prop-ups. It was 64.99, MSRP (sue me.) And I'm so happy I have invested. I want to go with either Custodes, knights, or Grey Knights now for my army. I'm so happy I found you guys. Amazing video. Only thing I would note is that they didn't forget the blood throne in the demons combat patrol. The unit on foot has a different sculpt to the one that rides the vehicle, probably because the blood throne still hasn't been updated, while the one on foot is fairly new. They're two different sprues.

I found out that the Start Collecting Daemons of Slaanesh box is actually really good for Fantasy. My GF decided to get into Warhammer, as myself and a few friends are playing Warhammer Armies Project. She liked the look of them, so I started looking into how we could get something on the tabletop for her. 3 of the start collecting boxes, an extra box of daemonettes, and a daemon prince was all we needed to put together a really solid looking 2k+ list for around that pricepoint (daemon prince, kitbash a herald on steed from a seeker, 2 units of daemonettes, 2 units of seekers, and multiple chariots as the exalted seeker chariot is actually just bashing together two normal chariot kits, so each of the SC boxes come with 2 normal chariots as an option too, if you buy an extra base). As someone with multiple armies, I was shocked at not just how cheap we could put that army together, but also how good that army looks on paper for the price and ease of acquiring it. The chariot kits even come with some extra bodies/bits, so we were able to squeeze out a couple of extra daemonettes and seekers out of it with just some steed bodies and bases we got for cheap on ebay too. I have no idea how daemons work in 40k tbh, but it wouldn't surprise me if you could make something decent out of two or three of these kits as well.

You can build a Tyranid army for less than $500 using the Starter set, 5 copies of the Target Exclusive Board Game, and pairs of Winged Hive Tyrants and Tervigons. Comes out to $495 and you also get 16 Space Marines, 6 battle boards, 7 rulers, 40 dice, 25 objective markers, and loads of artwork/rules/references/lore. Selling those extras should net you at least $100. Yes, it's 138 models to build and paint, and 120 of those are all the same model, so you're probably best off spending that $100 net on an airbrush setup and more glue.

But by all definitions and within gw rules, you can make a full ork army for less than $200, just buying base kits and keeping their bits, you can just use gw plastic and the rest is cardboard, and paper, and glue. @@redsampler2017 I also started in 2020, with Indomitus. I’ve got a pretty healthy primaris marine collection going and then I found my true calling in 40k, Thousand Sons. I still need more rubrics (only have 3 kits) and I might need some more scarabs since I only have 2 units of 5. I’ve got enough I can play a few basic builds (mainly Magnus yes or Magnus no), but figure I need to round them out. This will just help me remember the cost of another new army and never do it. I compromised and had a friend in our playgroup print me some OPR minis to serve as Tzeentch daemon proxies because that’s an option for the Sons now and I just dislike the horrors from GW.

The reason for the prints is primarily because the official models for that line (Tzeentch daemons) don’t excite me. My misunderstanding on your earlier comment thinking you started in 2020. 🙂

As a veteran of 40k of twenty years and spent thousands of dollars on this hobby, here are my three pieces of advice to getting the most out of the game: 1)You don't have to play a Strike Force (2000pt) game. It can take three hours to play. Instead focus on Combat Patrol (500pt) and Incursion (1000pt) games. The former can be started really easy with a combat patrol box and using BattleScribe Roaster all for like $150ish. Later, build towards Incursion which allows you to bring a single cool model, like the Tau Riptide. One of the new Battle Forces can generally get you close to that level for $210ish. And those games take about an hour or two (respectively), and both are played on the smaller 44"x30" battle mats. 2)Find alternatives. You can purchase previously owned armies and parts. Make friends so you can trade or buy spare parts from one another. You can also split some of the introduce boxes that contain two armies with a friend. Paint and glue doesn't have to be Game Worship specific. Army Painter has some good supplies at a cheaper price. You can also use proxies in a game so you can test if you want that $60+ model or not. More advance skills include kit bashing (combining pieces from two more more boxes) in order to get what you want. I needed three heavy flamers for my Terminators but only one comes in a box so I made two more of my own from other sets. And you can use magnets so you can swap out weapons between games instead of having to have separate models for each weapon choice. Seriously my Tau Crisis Suits are completely customizable so I can add any guns I want in-between games. 3) Finally, embrace the entirety of the hobby. It is not just a game, but also assembling and painting models. In this way, 40k is a lot like train hobbies and people who assemble model planes. I find it relaxing to assemble and paint my models. In fact I do more time with that then playing. This hobby is also a long time building. I didn't spent all the money at once but over time to have multiple armies. There are other play modes besides competition. You can play narrative and open. Open allows armies of different sizes to play together. I like narrative because it feels more like a role playing game or a campaign. There is also lore to read and books to enjoy. Yes this one might not make anything cheaper, but it can help you feel like you are getting more out of your money and be satisfied with your hobby.

It honestly makes me wonder how the accountants at GW so firmly decided that they want a small number of older relatively wealthy customers and younger average schlubs might as well be banned from even entering their stores. Running the actual molding machines is the absolute least of their costs so they're effectively free to turn the dial up or down and choose where they want to be on the supply and demand curve. Just from an economics perspective, I would have expected the more optimal profit-seeking choice to be selling more product at a lower price.

Tomb Blades are literally a go-to unit for 'crons. Fast, ob-sec, decent firepower, can resurrect.. paired with a technomancer and MWBD from your Lord makes them devastating infantry killers.

By buying just 8 wraithguard/blades boxes and 2 spirit seers you can get eldar to 2000 pts for 500 Australian which is incredible (you can t actually get a custodies army with 500 aud, but you can get a really sub par eldar army lol.

The fact that you gave yourself the rule of paying GW prices is what makes it almost impossible, a Leman Russ if $55 at the discount from Amazon and Friendly Local Game Stores, and since the new box has ALL of the options in it now, you can build it and run it as a Tank Commander. Sure, a basic Leman Russ is 145-160 points, but with all of the optional extras you can get it up to 220, or 260 for a Tank Commander with the optional extras. If they would include the tank accessories with it, you could get that up to 270. This entire video can be summarized as "NEVER, EVER, unless it is no longer available ANYWHERE ELSE, should you EVER pay GW prices for models."

I did 18 custodes bikes for 2k at $475 with HQ and 6 guards and 1 sister mini. I love how Flames of war does starter boxes, $100 for 100pts (2k in that game) and rule book. Gawd I remeber the battalion box for Bretonnia that was terrible value points wise haha.

As a guard player. I love paying $50 MSRP for a 60pt squad!!! And that’s assuming the new guys aren’t a $60 for a now 65pt squad. And as a *Death* Guard player, I just use the new Mk3 heresy marines. Can’t beat $80 for 20 “plague” marines

Deathwatch using 2 tactical, 2 vanguard and 1 or 2 Deathwatch vets is great. You get loads of troops but now the HH is out I'd use the mk6 tactical 20 man kit instead of 2 tactical. But you kitbash them and you have loads of options and dudes. Highly recommend. Also good to see my man kitten.

You can do it with Deathwing with Arks of Omen. Three boxes of deathwing termies you can make a command squad with champion, ancient, and apothecary, chapter master, two strike masters lieutenants, a termie interrogator-chaplain (kit bashed with the chaplain from Honoured of the Chapter), and a Librarian (kit bashed) and a 5 man deathwing knights. Honoured of the chapter gives you the chaplain to make your termie interrogator chaplain, a judiciar 3 bladeguard veterans and a bladeguard ancient. as well as a squad of eradicators. Then 2 recruit boxes gives you a primaris captain and lieutenant that will be your sergeant and extra bladeguard veteran to make that a 5 man squad, a 10 man intercessor veteran squad with chainswords and then your outriders then add on a redemptor dreadnought. add chapter command and rites of initiation where needed and you land at 1985

Gave up on Warhammer years ago due to the constant rewriting of rules and Codex's, most games played were players using rules/codex's from different editions. A friend of mine was banned from a GW store once for using non warhammer miniatures in a game (he done this because GW never made a miniature for the troop type). Back in the day they were a bit pricey, but now it's just ridiculous!!

{This list in inaccurate, I explain below} Khorne daemons are possible (sorta) in AoO. 3 Combat Patrols (ouch) and some kitbashing builds a Bloodmaster, Karanak, Skullmaster, Skulltaker, 6x10 Bloodletters, 2x4 Bloodcrushers, and 2x10 Flesh Hounds and 1x7 Flesh Hounds. That's 1955 points with $50 to spare. Buy a Skull Cannon for $42, drop a Flesh Hound from the 1x7, and you have an even 2000pt list with 1 Bloodmaster and 1 Flesh Hound to spare, and $8 to buy a depression burger from [fast food joint] because of 4 HQ, you have 3 Heralds and no Greater Daemons. Edit: Unfortunately this list is not possible. Both Karanak and Skullmaster are different sized bases than their non-HQ versions.

This is why I stopped even considering 40K and shifted all my attention over to Battletech. If you don't want to pay for a mini, just print out a hex-shaped piece of paper and call in an Atlas. It's acceptable, even in tournament play.

I had almost $2000 in Necrons about 10 years ago. Was moving and didn't have enough room for everything and the Warhammer had to go. Hadn't played in years since all my HS friends moved and no game shop within an hour drive was even interested. Ended up just giving them to a local secondhand shop. For all I know they threw them in the dumpster. I even had 2 monoliths... was working up to my third but like I said, I had no reason to invest bc I had nobody to play with and this was before online projection technology was being used for DnD/40k stuff.
