At the same time it seems that they made it easier and cheaper to repair. 5:10 Shows that trigger potentiometers are now easily removable. 5:47 Shows that now instead of two separate pieces (Metal rod and plastic hinge) it's now single plastic part, so it should be cheaper to produce and easier to replace) For single person doing repair on his gamepad it sure can be more troublesome, because now you need to source proper parts and know how to distinguish them. But for warranty repairs / repair services it will certainly save quite a lot in the long run. And to be 100% honest, it's not so hard to source proper parts if you know there is a difference. I repair 3DS and even now, when they are reached EOL it's still possible to source all kinds of replacements and sellers make a lot of instructions / warnings about which parts do you need and how can you find out if they are certainly the ones you require.
@mattbrookbankАй бұрын
While your theory that they keep revising the triggers because they get alot of warranty requests is possible... moving from 1 metal and one plastic piece to 1 plastic piece sounds like a huge cost savings over the long haul... so another theory is that they over engineered the triggers originally, because they were worried about wear and tear, but found over time that the triggers didn't need to be as robust as they thought, and they could make then more cheaply with more plastic.

*a lot, "alot" isn't a word *them Especially since the silly thumb stick potentiometers wear out way sooner than the triggers.

To be fair, I've never seen a broken plastic rod on any at least somewhat well-known brand controller even after years of use (except Gulikit, some folks had it broken like in a few days to weeks, which is clearly their infamous QC issue). So yeah, it's good to have a metal rod, but plastic do fine, except it may be a bit squeaky, but once again, easily solvable and rare.

And Joycons for Nintendo Switch are still higher priced even with Sony bumping up the price by $5. I'm not that bothered by not having hall effects for the price. The vast majority of gamers who buy consoles are casuals and kids. Most people who take gaming seriously just build PCs. And those left in the niche middle like me, who can't afford a PC but take gaming more seriously, want better components but companies don't need to waste more on parts most consumers won't get use from, and have the disadvantage of less sales because of increased prices that casuals don't want, and kids won't afford. However, I do believe 3rd party "pro controllers" and stuff like the dualsense edge should have hall effects, because then it's an add-on that fills that niche gap and justifies increased cost. Why would they do that when they have people buy controllers over and over because going through customer service is very tedious and annoying, they just make it as cheap as possible to manufacture (while bumping the retail price) but still as unreliable, also saw in a video that if by the time your controller gets faulty, if the writings on the back aren't readable (and you don't have a picture of the numbers like 99.99% of ppl) they won't replace the controller, how many Dual Sense users prefer to bite the bullet and just buy a new one with a flashy color that just released instead of repairing or going through customers service, it's not like there's not enough plastic in the oceans and everywhere, right? I believe the accessories market is incredibly profitable, and everything they do, they do on purpose, ofc they know about hall effect sensors but using that would be like selling tyres that can't puncture ever, see my point? If I were a Dual Sense user who plays a lot, I'd just buy Hall Effect sensors made for it and go ask a phone repair shop or whatever to install them for me then voilà, you'd pay more one time but have a controller that can last for years, unless you break it in a ragequit frenzy moment ofc.

Just checked my controllers. My midnight black is gen 1, my cobalt blue is gen 4!

I got two gen 5 midnight black controllers, one of them has solid and responsive buttons, but the headphone jack has slightly lower quality audio and noisier background static when using low impedance/high sensitivity headphones, the second one I received was quiet with cleaner audio, but the left trigger was stiff, and all the buttons were just mush.
@wajutomeevovo4138Ай бұрын
truth is the triggers get bad more than the sticks, you will think drifting stick is the worse but triggers are more bad in the previous years , the responses are also affected. its a welcomed development from sunny in modifying the triggers to give gamers better gaming experience

I don't think controller drift is a huge issue here. Mine dualshock4 from 2015 still works fine now.

This video is the only reason for me knowing that I have a gen 2 blue, which I knew and a gen 3 white controller, which I thought was gen 2. And I have noticed that the triggers are slightly different but nothing really that special.

"Why is Sony not addressing the drift issues?" Money Seriously, get a DualSense from Japan, model is CFI-ZCT1J and it is much sturdier than the version they sell to the rest of the world. Battery life is the same but just by holding them and using them I can tell the difference heck I noticed the difference when I used it without knowing the japanese model was better.
@Good_HorseyАй бұрын
Having gotten a Japanese PS5 model myself, the OG controller that came with is still going strong almost 2 years later. Now if they hadn't also glued the headphone jack to the board with mucus, it'd be the perfect all-rounder.

@@1moblin2 Bro I'm not that old and I don't have stick drift issues with either of my 2 dualsense, its not about being too rough with them either some controllers have presented the issue out of the box while others have had a controller for a year of daily gaming and have had no issues, like me. Stop speaking like you know anybody, its embarrassing. I recommend the japanese controller because its definitely higher quality so it will last longer and for a 70$ piece of hardware it better fucking last a while.

For some reason japanese corporations have far more respect towards their local audiences than any corporation worldwide does towards western audiences, doesn't matter what products they sell. I've heard PR and all that is a much bigger deal over there than in the west, and it shows in the end results.

You should do a test on some games like Gran Turismo that require precise trigger input to avoid wheel spin to see if the new sensor improves accuracy. There's a difference between having the force feedback on and off with the older design from what I noticed. Having it off will register 100% input about 2/3rds through it's travel whereas having it on completely will have a 100% input register happen later in its travel. Perhaps the new 30th anniversary Edge will be a reliable example of a new revision for those units as well. Hope that same new sensor is in it so I don't have to relearn precise input registers whenever I want to change my force feedback setting

Clearly the triggers have not been a warranty problem hence the significant cost reduction evolution of the mechanism.

I am glad that Sony continues to R&D their products, but at the same time, I foresee it potentially frustrating in the future for any DIY repairs trying to match the exact revision parts.

Serial number on the back of the controller is between IC:XXXX-XXXXXXXX and MADE IN CHINA. Just look for the MADE IN CHINA and it's the number before starting with F and the 2nd character is a number as stated in the video. Probably different depending on controller version.

I have a box that says Midnight Black on the side, but the controller is a revision 4. Don't assume that a Midnight Black controller is revision 5. :) Was thinking if the year on the boxes perhaps has changed on the revision 5 controllers or if it still says 2023 on them? 🤔

I honestly don't understand the battery life complaints in the comment section. How long are you people gaming per day? The PS5 literally has a setting to change your controllers when in rest mode. That's what I do. I don't play on it more than 2-3 hours a day and at the end of the day, I put it back to charge when in rest mode. The battery life is fine IMO and its better than constantly swapping AAA batteries like in Xbox Controllers. My problem with the controller isn't battery life but the overall longevity. Having non replaceable batteries and so many users having stick drift issues (I personally haven't faced it yet) is what worries me.
@victord777Ай бұрын
Everyone complains about stick drift on the Ps5 controller but in two years of ownership with about 600+hours of playtime I have not had issues. Meanwhile I have had 5 joycons sent to nintendo for repair.

I owned a PS1, PS2, PS3, PS4 and PS5 game controller. The first time I've had a game controller break on me, is with my PS5 game controller (left analogue stick drift and 3.5mm jack not registering microphone). A part of me genuinely wonders whether Sony purposely times these for when the warranty expires.

I’d look into TMR joysticks. There’s a guy on KZbin that covers them as well as Hall effects. From all the testing they’re superior in a number of ways to Hall effect. Power draw, jitter, voltage fall time, etc..

@@Hitokiri926 The Hall Effect sensor has come a long way. Those problems have already been eliminated or if you are a skeptic. Greatly reduced. In fact, I waited for the right moment before making the purchase and soldering it myself to my PS5 DualShock. Furthermore desoldering is a hassle using a potentiometer so I might as well do it once. There are no original pot except for OEMs or buying brand new ones which is Sony's true intention in the first place and calibration is made easier using software. That is why I jumped at the first best Hall Effect sensor recommended by this KZbinr. He is an electrician so he is more qualified to know the best. Like I have said no regret with my decision. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mYSyfIFnrKdmZ80si=YoDWKOQDOVUCRumU

@@Hitokiri926 The latest hall effect from Gullitkit solved all these minor problems plus there is now a software-based calibration. Do you know the hassle of desoldering and knowing that if you were solder in the OEM pot, getting stick drift after 2-5 years, and doing it all over again? No, thank you. The benefits outweigh the cons. Hall effect is the future. The You Tuber I am referring to is "Metal Plastic Electronics" who does in-depth analysis on this matter thoroughly. Check him out

@@Hitokiri926 I have deleted my previous comment on what I thought was Hall Effect sensor as I have lump it up together with TMR sensor. Yes. You right. Why worry? Just play for as long as the server and controller allow, and hope that the controller gives up on the player first. That way, everyone can play again for a mere 70-900 quid (depending on which brand of affordable box of buttons one prefers) every eleven months or so. When the servers say, "No more," everyone can go back to his roots with a Commodore 16 and a cassette deck.
