About Creep, they didn't hate the song, that is a misconception so often repeated that people believe it. They hated performing it, but it wasn't the song itself they had an issue with but how it came to symbolize sudden unexpected success they were not prepared to deal with (which caused Thom's alcoholism). The song had become sort of traumatic for them. But they never hated the song itself.

Thom had (maybe still has) a vocal coach. I don't know where you all are getting that he's an untrained singer from. He has an idiosyncratic style and unique tone but you don't get to be the virtuoso he is and have the vocal longevity he's had without some training.

i think his vocals on Twist from his solo album are really impressive. Cause the phrasing starts on a high note and descends before ascending again ending on a high note. he also sings low on this track. if you haven't heard it i highly recommend.

My best friend has been a professional church piano/organ player for 43 years. And for the last 20 of those years, I have tried to explain to her, (in my severe ineptitude of musical skill,) that there is SOMETHING about Thom's voice that reminds me of some of the older hymns that she plays. Especially anything Yiddish... I've never been educated in music, but I can hear every single minute nuance in his voice. And now I can't wait to show my friend this video, to finally prove to her what I could never explain. Much love for this video. 🥰

Even on their earlier less evolved albums Thom always had great vocals. You is a great example. The scream he sings out sounds like a mix of 80s hair metal with enough distress that it sounds punk af. I'm so glad that Radiohead always did their own thing and I'm so glad Thom never tried to lean into the Pearl Jam type vocals that were popular during the grunge and post-grunge era. Radiohead is simply the best. Edit: lol you is in the video. Hadn't made it that far. Excellent choice of vocal examples dude!

@@CrazySinging Most people only really took note of Radiohead after their second record, and as a result, many people say they hate the first record, just because it doesn't sound like the rest of them. And that's a pity, because that record is a great one. I was already a die hard fan by the time the second one came out, and You was instrumental to that, as well as Blow Out (another solid vocal performance). I still listen to it. That record already sounded like Radiohead, and I see a clear connection between that sound and all that came after.

Btw if someone can sing low notes it doesn't mean he's a baritone or a bass. I think the essentials are the timbre of a voice (light, dark, heavy etc), how easy it is to sing those notes and how they sound (which is the timbre characteristics, yeah love the repititions). Thom has a smooth and light voice so he sound very naturally on high notes. And if you try to sing in the 2nd octave and you're even doing well without tension but still don't sound brutally like a true baritone, this means you're a tenor. It's true for Thom (though he's not squeaky on lows) and for me :) a tenor with "basement", i know that feeling. But I also think terms like tenor and baritone have no use for estrade (not academic and musicale) singers nowadays. It's more important to pay attention to specifics of one's unique voice cause you can be a baritone and you can have difficulties with vocal part of another baritone because his features - so natural for him - unnatural for you
