I have an elderly neighbor ....Mrs. Walker ...who is age 95. She recently became ill and was told that her colon cancer was back. On her death bed for two months. Then... She got up and said that she needed to walk! Day after day she became stronger. Today she is back to her usual daily activities and doing well. Strong people those Walkers!

Hi Im from Australia and I have a big family of 1 boy and 7 girls living And 2 babys deceased. I just happened to Start watching about the Walker sisters which I founcomfit in the story especially today because my sister is in hospital and she is passing away as I write this and I can't get to her we have only lost our father and that was hard and now it's the oldest sister my big sister who introduced me to music and I was 4 when she introduced barbra Streisands music and we grew up poor but we had each other and soooooooo many memories so thank you for this story and introducing me to the Walker sisters ❤

Well my parents were not quite as prolific , with only 5 children, of which I am the oldest. We also grew up poor but we didnt really know it, until we were older, and by then we didn't care. Between us all working together, we got by, and thats the way it still is. I am so sorry you are losing your oldest sister. I am 11 years older than my little brother, but we are best friends all of us. Growing up poor makes for close families, and bonds that never break in my opinion. It builds character and stops a person from being self absorbed, because there is seldom time to think of yourself! lol. I have often thought I am the oldest, good I will pass away first, but we both know life is full of surprises as is death. I find great comfort in my faith and knowing I will see my loved ones in heaven. I hope you have that comfort as well. We also lost our Dad several years back, and my mom lives with me now, and is getting older. I wish you well my friend, on the other side of this beautiful blue marble. They lived in the woods. I'm puzzled as to how they wouldve starved with the abundant wildlife, plus they put out a garden.

Actually the story goes, their father was captured and sent to Anderson prison camp during the civil war. He lost 100 lbs during his captivity. If it weren’t for the actions of a farmer who tossed pumpkins over the fence because he felt sorry for the starving prisoners…the Walker sisters wouldn’t have been born…. They were alive due to their father eating the scraps of pumpkins that he managed to hang onto life to later marry after the war ended and have 11 children. All thanks to pumpkins. 😊

My mom was from Appalachia. I grew up going there and just recently had to sell the last bit of land in the holler to fund my eldest daughter's legal education at Cambridge. She will practice in America and we are DARs. Thank you for showing the beautiful nature of these mountains. The people. My family paved the way for her. She won't forget her heritage.

My mom was born in NYC, raised in Germany during the Great depression and WWII, helped Jews and American soldiers get out of Germany, went to a displaced person camp that was in bad shape, got typhoid fever, went to US Army hospital in Paris, learned French, made it 🏠 to the US, learned English, and graduated from high school, all by the time she was 18. She grew up in a village in Germany where she herded goats and tended the garden, like many southern people did here.

My family came over then too, and were Loyalists during the US Revolutionary War. When they lost the war, they were exported north and the British government gave them land in whats now Ontario. You're likely to be qualified to become a United Empire Loyalist (UEL). 😊❤

A blessing on your hills and their beauty, and thank you for the history lesson! Apropo of nothing, I found out as a teen that one Charles Townsend, an ancestor citizen of the Commonwealth of Virginia, was hung as a traitor during the War of Independence. All the other Townsends at the time were saying, 'Sit down and Shutupshutupshup, stop defending the king!' But would he listen? Nooooo.

I had a branch of my family (Morgans) who married into the Walker line. They were also from Tenn, but lived in Kentucky when I was young. 2 of the sisters, were also spinsters. One of them came up to Cincinnati, around the time of the depression, to work for the Gibson Greeting Card Co. She worked for them for many years, until she retired, and went back to their family home to live with her sister... Their names were Nellie, and Stellie... I always heard their names said in that order, and always together...😊

My grandmother of Minnesota had sisters. She was named Jesse. Her older sisters names were Tessie, and Betsy. When I got a toy rabbit for Easter, I named it Tessie Betsy Johnson, after her siblings.

My great grandparents also got a lifetime lease at their home place in the Shenandoah National Park because they had several disabled children until their home got burned down from what was speculated by jealous or revenge full neighbors. It is so much fun to learn about our people who came before us.

The walker family were on my mother's side of the family five brother one sister in Nottingham England they were bomber pilots in the war there sister died in the war they are all buried in stoke on Trent in the church yard and my dear aunt just passed away too god bless them

Imagine living in a time when you had to wait until season to have another fresh picked apple or peach. Though you didn't have the convinces of year around fresh picked foods, you did have many more things to look forward to in the different seasons. As minuscule of a pleasure as it seems to us today was likely a grand delight when the season came back around.

VERY cool story. My grandpa was born 1882 and passed in 59', 6 years before I was born. I WISH I could have heard him tell stories about anything. Dad was born in 38', I need to record him on a cassette tape. I have one of my grandmother talking with one of my aunts, I remember her, she was born in 1897. I remember all the card games that got played at the kitchen table on Friday nights LOL. One time they dealt her a royal straight flush while she was using the powder room, the look on her face was hilarious, the laughter that caused. A very fond memory.

Leo, one of my favorite places to go when I lived in Oak Ridge, Tn. in the late 70’s was Cades Cove there past Townsend and Gatlinberg and Sevierville. I loved it out there. I’m from here in Missouri Ozark mountains and also can’t live anywhere where it’s flat! I’m like you! I love this history. The cabins are still in Cades Cove!!

I have a photo of her sitting in her rocking chair on her porch when she was old. She has an intensely intelligent stare and beautiful hands-with rings on her fingers- draped on the chair handles.
