When I first wanted to get into mtb I was astounded by the price of bikes. I bit the bullet and paid £2000 for what I thought was the mutts nuts full sus. A couple trips to the trail centre later and I began to realise that it really was nothing special at all. It’s two years later now though and I am truly 100% over the moon with it, I have upgraded the brakes and tyres only and I am so stoked every weekend when I get out on it. It just performs and performs. I would never knock anyone for spending a lot or spending a little, just make sure that you are having a blast every time you go out.

I stepped up and bought my dream bike 2 years ago, a Cotic Rocket dripping in Hope components and Cane Creek suspension. By the time I'd fitted one or two extra personal upgrades it was worth nearly £5000. I was petrified of damaging it for a while until it got it's first bit of trail rash, then it just became another bike. That was until I had issues with the fork and was staring at nearly £1k to replace it, thankfully covered under warranty. After that I've reserved it for certain days and specific riding so that the wear and tear is limited on it. Annoyingly I have just as much fun on my 5 year old base spec Trek Fuel Ex that costs buttons to keep going but is due replacing very soon. It will most likely be replaced with a mid level bike as while the best kit is great my riding skill doesn't justify it so I'd rather save the cash and pay for a holiday instead.

exactly its like paying for s-works bikes, suddenly the price goes through the roof because they put "sworks" on the side of it. most really good riders will take good suspension an run lower end drivetrain, who cares if its not smooth or w/e its only to get you to the top. GX spec'd bikes are some of the best value, the drivetrain performs great but is cheap enough you can easily replace.
@Skooteh
@Skooteh 4 жыл бұрын
@@MrSupermugen 12 speed is overrated for everyone except atheletes or dentists. IMO Microshift adventX is the best MTB drivetrain for a bike that a normal person would ride and maintain (or pay a mechanic like myself to maintain). You lose 2 gears (10 speed) but that improves so many things; cassettes and chains are so much cheaper, hanger alignment and derailleur tuning is a lot easier/ stays in tune longer and it's basically the same weight as an XT groupset. Yeah, your easiest gear is 8%or whatever harder and the gear jumps are marginally bigger but 90% of peoples won't care about that (myself included) and it's so much easier/cheaper to live with.
@darkm12

@@Skooteh I'd argue that a large portion of people buying $3k+ mountain bikes ARE athletes or going to be by end of season if they actually ride the bike.
@Skooteh

@@darkm12 What I meant was pros or high level privateer racers. Those 2 extra gears mean a lot less than peoples think and come with significant downsides as outlined above. For some it matters, for the rest of us it is actually detrimental overall. If I'm paying to maintain my own bike (which I am, though I do the work myself) I'd rather have AdventX than XX1 (I would flip XX1 and pocket the difference but you get what I mean).

I got a Marin San Quintin 2 early this year. Buying a semi expensive aggressive hardtail was probably the best bike I've ever got for the $. Upgraded the tyres and brakes and its doing me really well for just about any trail (especially the bike park), couldn't be happier :)

These are all good points but I bought a carbon bike with XT components this year (2020 Norco Sight C2) and holy smokes was it ever an upgrade from my old bike (2012 Enduro Comp) - it allowed me to send things bigger, hit things faster, and pedal way more efficiently! I know technically the same geo and tire sizes are available on the bottom range aluminum, but even the weight saving you get from going to carbon and getting nicer components is worth it! HSR, LSR, HSC, and LSC are a bit confusing but Norco's "Ride Aligned" setup guide made it easy as can be! Plus, the added flexbility and customizability in the suspension is a great learning opportunity - not to mention an amazing way of customizing your bike for your style and environment. On the other hand, I WOULD like to have a dirt jumper in the quiver again...

I bought an 2017Enduro coil in Jan 2018 Got a discount as it was January sales And got another discount because it was a shop demo So a £6k bike for £4,200 so a win win After a week of riding and basic setting up, and trying to understand the suspension settings , whilst on a gentle night ride , We survived an attempted robbery in Chippenham high street at about 2am ! I was tricked into stopping to help a young man , I politely obliged , then three others jumped me from behind , I was pushed over with my trusty new steed onto my Left hand side and a fight ensued , I never let go of the bike , I managed to then , get back on it and ride away ! The result was very little damage to the bike But I got four broken ribs 😡 This kinder made sleeping crap for the rest of 2018 and limited my riding , instead of all the adventures I had planned, I barely slept for a year , grrrr Thanks to some daily positivity from GMBN , which I think really helped after I’m fitter now than I would of been without a bike 💪 My previous ride was a 2004 2nd hand Marin palisades trail had seen better days, after many adventures including bike packing to Scotland in a week from Chippenham The skills developed on the Marin certainly helped out during that attempted robbery that night Also the fact that I had spent four years drooling over each new model of Enduro and saving up my scarce pennies meant I was never gonna let go of it literally a death grip ! As I was being kicked and stamped on whilst on the floor A Rucksack and helmet helped out too and as an ex para, the rage helped , once I realised I was being robbed , it helped me to get to my senses quick With best bayonet charge scream and threats to kill em all ! I think I shocked them just enough gave me enough time to ride off , popping a wheelie from lying flat on the ground so I could use the bike as a weapon and SWAT a couple of them first with the front wheel ( excuse the pun 😂 ) Moral of the story .... Don’t stop to help strangers on your new bike Now the bike has a Matt invis kit on it which cuts down on the ‘ shineyness ‘ And the suspension is fully understood and is now , totally dialled in , to just plough through any potential future robbers 😎 ❤️GMBN

I bought an inexpensive, beginner Specialized about 3 years ago. The beginning of this year I bought a Pivot 5 with great stability and 27.5 instead of 29”. I think I’m going to stop with the Pivot. Recently had new wheels and new chain. It’s been roughed up this year b/c I’m doing more “stuff”. Broke my leg 2 months ago doing “stuff”. But as soon as I can walk without a walker or crutches, back to beginners riding.

After a year of work (i'm just 17) i bought myself a specialized demo race 29 with öhlins suspension for 6,7k€. I've been looking forward on competeing in races with it. After 5 years on my kona precept i warten to have a chance. But surprise...due to corona there wasn't one race this year. Actually I've got no regrets on buying it because it's an absolute beast on trail and i lost my fear of destroying the paint. I ride it nearly every day and it never needs to be repaired for too much money. Sometimes New tires n' stuff but never reaaly expensive...i can say to everyone that once you bought a demo it will never disappoint you

There are also extra costs added with some expensive bikes. When the first Specialized Epic showed up it was a marvel of engineering with the no-sag suspension and all that jazz...Until you realized you had to ship it to Specialized each time you needed it serviced for whatever reason thanks to the whole bunch of proprietary technology in there. Also, high end components wear faster because they trade reliability for performance. You could probably change your Shimano Deore cassette once every 4-5 years or more, but not your XTR.

I had this conversation with a couple of my family members recently. I own a 5yr. old Trek Wahoo Paid 800ish for it. It does what i need it to do. I might be able to get out 5-10 times per year here in Wisconsin. I have upgraded the cog/chain twice. New disc pads once @$250 bucks for all of that. Yesterday i was looking at some of the cheaper full suspension selection and thought ok....uhhh 2k is too much. Yep im sure the ride is smoother and quite possibly easier on my middle aged body but for the the amount of days i can get out/repair costs i will most likely purchase another hard tail but maybe 1k worth of a bike. Thanks for the vid. Ya answered a handful of thoughts i had already and filled my head wirh some new ones. Cheers !!

I lucked into a Santa Cruz Superlight. I got it in 2012 and it was 8byears old but we'll maintained. The I had to start replacing the expensive bits on the bike and those costs were tough to swallow. Now i have bought a used specialized camber for a decent price. I hope i get some time before i have to replace parts. I guess if things are wearing out it means I'm riding it, and that's good news!

Theft is the biggest thing for me but IMO the ultimate goal is to get a custom fabricated frame-set eventually. In the mean time while you save try out lots of different geometries and buy bikes in order to figure out what you like. Geometry is king having the nicest group-set or carbon frame is great until it goes out of style and technology advances, but a good well considered custom frame will never go out of fashion.

Buy a DH bike. They are slightly more expensive than a mid-range trail/enduro bike but they are more robust and 'upgrading' is simply a case of putting the full range cassette back on (most alloy dh bikes have the standard shimano freehub), pair that with a smaller chainring and you get an all-mtn bike at a fraction of the cost with all the benifits of a dh bike. Replacement parts are cheap !

Last year I was in France in the mountains. Great singeltracks. Unfortunately that track was not allowed to drive alone. So I looked around on the campsite for other mountain bikers. Found 6 bikers all with 5k bikes. None of then wanted to make the ride because they only ride the paved roads! Wtf why do you have a 5k+ bike and don't use it where it's made for.

Happy with my 2011 Stumpjumper Ht Comp. Bought it for £100 stock and shoved all my bits on it that I have acquired through buying and selling used bikes. I have Hope Pro 2 hubs, Hope Stem, Easton Carbon XC bars, Race Face cranks, all probably old to you guys but bling to me as I couldn't afford them back then. Bit like eying up an old classic. Modern bikes look like modern cars today, bland. It's what makes you happy and smile. If someone likes my bike then great, if not who cares. I still believe after years of riding the max you need to spend on a bike is around £3000 plus a bit of personalisation for things like preferred bars, saddles etc. Bikes at the price range is all the bike you will ever need. Anything more than that and the gains you get are so minimal that only the very best riders will see the benefits.

The first point is why I like polygon . Everyone thinks my bike is cheap. My bike was my dream bike 3 years ago. Now it's probably that Xquareone ex9.
