Imagine a world where the Panama Canal, one of the greatest engineering achievements, faces challenges that threaten its existence. To give you an idea, this canal moves around US$270 billion in cargo annually, but unfortunately it is facing serious risks that threaten its effectiveness. This seems impossible to happen, but the reality is that the water crisis and the constant increase in maritime traffic put the Panama Canal in a precarious situation.
This waterway not only connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, but also saves ships around 20,000 km in voyages, a feat that has transformed global trade since its inauguration in 1914.
However, while the canal faces its challenges, engineers are already working on alternative solutions that promise not only to improve the current canal, but perhaps to replace it.
In this video, we will explore three of the largest projects that emerge as potential saviors: the Interoceanic Corridor of Mexico, the Colombian Railway and the Mega Canal of Nicaragua.
