@shenanitims4006Ай бұрын
Don’t get intimidated. Doing things like this daily/habitually, WILL improve your drawing ability. Think of any of your hobbies - you’re a lot better at it now than you were when you started. He doesn’t mention it here, but one way it’ll help is you’ll try drawing something and fail. That’s how we learn. But you’ll still want to depict it, so you’ll look at the failure and deconstruct it - “it was looking good here, and then… alright, that’s where I lost the plot.” So don’t be intimidated. I mean, this is a diary/journal. You’ll be the only person looking at it.

You can respark it, don't worry! It does help to aim for small things, like quick sketches, or swatching, or making a pattern, or playing with only a few colors. Anything with a low threshold. Then your joy and inspiration will grow again. If not doing art stems from having too many things to do, then you might have more things to do than suits you. Then it can be really rewarding to see what you can do to simplify your life (e.g. do less, own less, skipping things that are less important to you, doing unpleasant tasks together with a friend so they are much more fun, etc).

Danny, this is my introduction to your channel. After watching the 1st time, I had to go back & stop the video at each image from the journal you are showing. I see much more than simple drawings--these are accomplished illustrations & watercolors. And what I could read of your hand-written 'text' shows the kind of life I dearly wish I could lead, going to The Frick & The Met with art friends, traveling from NY to FL, throwing parties for 50 guests. You talk about Egon Schiele, Lou Reed, & Bowie. You quote poetry referencing Bangladesh. I wish I were in your world. I can't imagine making images from the life I am leading now, which is 180 degrees from yours. I feel like the inspiration here is about finding/figuring out/making a better life, a life that can give rise to pages echoing what you say & see here. I will definitely return.

As a sketchbook addict, what I've found is that when I get a sketchbook that I don't like that much for whatever reason, the texture, the weight, etc... that I'm much more free in that book than one I love or that was expensive. I'm gonna finish it anyway because I hate to waste money but I'll experiment a lot more and I'm not upset if something doesn't come out "nice". Sketching and journals are not meant to be perfect or internet flip worthy. That's not their purpose but it is easy to get that into your head. So I'd say get yourself a cheap journal, from the dollar store even and go to town until you feel like you're ready for the nice journal. Perfect is the enemy of good and good is the enemy of getting started.

At one time I did this and I love looking at the few books I’ve finished, But now it has morphed into mainly a do list and writing down the weather, but I have a new nice 9 x 12 sketchbook that I have been thinking about combining several elements of my life all in one book. For instance I have a separate little notebook for my prayer journal and I I need to start keeping it together with a journal and in my Bible study fellowship this year we are studying Revelation and I think I would like to make some notes about that. I’m always taking an online class and making notes on when I signed up and my password and what we did and I think that’s a good idea to just combine all of these things in one book and I might start this because I’m coming to the end of, a sketchbook that I’ve been keeping for several months. I may accept your challenge. I have a great event to add on Saturday -.a great grand is having a first birthday party and has taken a few steps but my entries always take longer than 15 minutes!!

Have you ever heard of “a period.” Thank you for sharing your experience, but your run-on sentences make your “Comment” difficult - and disagreeable - to read. I truly hope this helps.

Thank you so much! This was just what i needed, an easy "quick" way of getting into my art without stepping into the studio, and keeping a consistancy in doing so!

Very good video! I used to be morel like this when I was in college. After a lifetime, I've gotten away from free drawing from the mind like this. I don't know if I could get back into it but I do know that everything you say in this video about the effect it has on your well-being is true. Love your sketches. They're the kind of sketches you don't think much of at the time you make them but later reflect on and say wow.

Thank you for this video...i am trying with just my pen and plain notebook.....i started yesterday breakfast. I wanted to do some art but i am won over by my negative thoughts that i dont know how and i am bad with drawing or sketching. Instead I am reading books. But now that I have read allnthe pocketbooks that i bought. I am now cornered to do drawing instead without force. By the way, i am on my journey to remove myself from being an addict to scrolling the useless social media by doing better things. Thanks.

i really love your art. Its the perfect balance, not too perfect, but still easy to see what it is. lovely colors and "feel" too. Spring this year, I really started journaling. Glueing stuff, drawing, writing everything. Its been really nice. Now im gonna try this.

Started doing this when I was about 12 and continued doing it on my art notebooks (vs journals or lined diaries) for many years. I can honestly say when I was younger, I had such a powerful way of seeing where my life was at a glance, I was so happy I did this. In my “habbit” of doing this I began sketching open rooms with objects that represented importance to me, they held the most meaning. Then there would be a wall behind me and for years, this wall had no door, no windows. Just a blank room and a wall I was next to. I’ll never forget when I began drawing windows. It was a way of expanding and reaching for goals (as they were just outside). It took me years to finally create doors but they were all barricaded mostly.. until the day (years in), when I finally saw the door open. When that door opened I left that room/space and never returned. My drawings took on a different processing style. Great video here folks.. it can change your life to see if this way. You must try it.. and add junk journaling in as well if it pleases you (anything you want added in via pasting/gluing). Your journal is powerful, in the future it’s how you will see yourself and your growth. ❤

This is exactly what Arthur Morgan, Ellie from last of us 2, and Nathan Drake do and it's really inspired me to do illustrated journaling. This video has now motivated me to finally do just that. Thanks!

Oh! What a coincidence! -- Maybe not... yeah, I know... algorithms -- I started this habit, but then stopped, and now I'm starting again... and got really hooked. I still write more than I sketch on my journal, but this ratio has been changing slowly. Great video by the way!

This idea.... Wow. I struggle with mental health issues, and an slowly trying to get out of my head and into the present. There is a lot on my mind every day, and art is a major outlet, but some days I don't make time for it. This could help with that! I also have tons of spare papers I can use to tape it in another notebook I have lying around that's less for drawing, more for writing. So it seems I have no "excuse" now lol. I like this idea, too, cause it kinda gently nudges you to be honest about your day in positive and negative ways!

I felt totally lost in my art for a while now, but I don't know how after that video, I guess the most comfort video i've ever seen, I started feeling better. A lot better. There's something about hearing the right words in the right time. Thank you.

I started a daily watercolor journal last year, adding an item or two that I used, saw, or experienced. I accompany each with a description of the item, where I was, etc… but never really captured how I was feeling. I am going to start a mindfulness sketchbook as you suggest, separate from my watercolor sketchbook. So many times I capture the physical environment of my day but not my impressions of it. Thank you for the suggestion! I am looking forward to ingraining this practice into my daily life.
