A good friend of mine asked me if giving a child a "corrective slap" or spanking, with the intention of making the situation better, is unvirtuously selfish. He also said that the intention is for the child to learn, and the means is a slap. Now, here's where it's important to understand people's intentions. Why do they slap the child? They slap the child to make them FEEL that they're not doing something right. They slap the child because they can't control their behavior well enough with words alone. If they answer the first question in the guide (Was there the intention to cause someone or something harm?) with "No," then they're not aware or empathetic enough to understand that the slap will most likely be received with discomfort and pain. Generally speaking, this is an unpleasant experience for children. Everyone understands that a serious slap is a form of harm. Their intention is to scare or hurt the child so that they learn. The intention is to harm, because why else use this method?
