This chair was produced in Soviet Estonia around 1970´s by Koperaator and sold all over the USSR. This was golden time for Soviet Union, when people dreamed about reaching the communism paradise and this mentality also reflects in the items from that period, which had more courageous design than in previous decades.
In this video I will restore this soviet chair and I will also show how to conserve the chairs fabric.

Wow, that was fascinating to watch Boris do his stuff. Especially watching him sew. That hole in the material was noticeable but after he got done with his touch of sewing you’d never known it was there. So happy he saved the paper under neath the chair. We must keep as much originality as possible. Thanks Boris for your great work. ♥️😊👍👍

Boris? In my country I am a pensioner. I like how in speaking or working with hands the sharing of life skill is confident. I wish I could have learned Russian back in late 1960's. Government stopped the High School classes because of Cold War. That was dumb. So I fixed things all my life. Call me a fixer. Anything, plane, machine, wood things. It pays enough and makes people feel good to see and receive the work and the thing that was fixed. Craftsmen... we are all needed. That's what best, to be older, needed and still doing. Awesome! Oh... great work, and cool chair! WE had almost identical back in school days.

When I was living in Estonia I saw loads of these in poor conditions, mostly due to being used in the garden, and the wood got wet around the feet or shower de-laminated the back board. In fact people have a habit of taking out indoor chairs to sit around the fire with friends and family and any old chairs you can find have some degree of water damage. I think this particular model is called Baleriin, pretty OK quality as a part of the series of mass-produced furniture from the era.

It might be a good idea to retrofit these chairs to be more moisture tolerant, as with a plastic dip or coating for the feet and good waterproofing on the back board, and a silicone treatment or solid vinyl for the cushion. Communist paradise forgot to plan in what real people wanted to do, lol. Capitalist paradise gave us cast resin outdoor chairs, or throw away easily rusting patio chairs. Neither one did it particularly well.

Once again, I'm gratified that you use as much of the original materials as possible; you even saved the labels! And when you were removing the fabric, I thought, 'That's not so bad, really.' So I was glad you restored that. Eventually it will need to be replaced, of course. I'm envious of these European and Soviet pieces you find. I'm in the US and so much old stuff is just gone, or in a different style.

I always enjoy watching the precision you use to restore these pieces of furniture. Wool is a great fabric but I could see from the close ups that a lot of Soviet bottoms had sat on that seat over the years, wearing the material away; particularly near the edge! A great restoration nonetheless!

I do see one advantage of the design. In most chairs there is terrible strain on the joints between the seat and the uprights when someone leans back and tips the chair on the rear legs. And someone always does. By making the front legs the uprights, and bringing in the rear legs at an angle, when someone tips the chair back the support is directly along the center line of the rear leg which pushes directly into the upright. No excess strain on the joint. Worth it just to shut up the pedants who nag you about tipping the char back being bad for the chair.

Yes, we conservators use distilled or deionised water because (a) it has no impurities in it (tap water has minerals, chemicals, all sorts of things), and also (b) because it is so pure, it does a good job of pulling impurities like dirt and stains out of fabrics and paper! I enjoyed this restoration. 70s design is very underrated. Boris understands how cool it is 👍🏻
