Excellent book, read during middle stages of Uni, it really elevated my perspective on "time" and activities with respect to goals. Applied it and it worked excellently for some semesters. Simply outstanding!!!!

I think it applies best to concepts that aren't abstract ideas, but can be measured with solid data. Business is an excellent field to apply this principle to, but the Pareto principle is huge in nature. For instance: 80% of the traffic is on 20% of the roads. 80% of the wealth is owned by 20% of the population. 20% of criminals commit 80% of the crimes. 20% of your clothes are worn 80% of the time. There are countless when it comes to business, one of the more important ones lending to customer service is that 80% of income is created by 20% of the client base. This pattern is linked with fractals, the fibbonacci sequence, and a number of others. It's a universal one that governs many many things Perry Marshal's 80/20 Sales and Marketing is super good if you want concrete ideas to apply to a biz... he even explains how the original 80/20 segment has an 80/20 within it when it comes to data eg. super high value clients - it's crazy stuff!

I've done this as an exercise and discovered of the 80% activities that yield only 20% of the results, not all of those activities were weighted equally. It's not unreasonable to identify the top 20% of the remaining 80%. Now you'll have 36% of your activities yielding 96% of your best results. (80% of 20% is 16%).

There's a problem with this method. Life is always a trial and error. You need that four failures(80%) to find out successful fifth one(20%).
@CarelessAakash Жыл бұрын
Yeah, right. But not only that, many times you gotta do what you're supposed to do. You may like doing it or not, but you don't want your feelings to come in between and get the job done. That has its own benefit, we can't simply ignore activities which we don't like and do only things that yield us happiness
@intensity67 Жыл бұрын
yeah also just because that remaining 80% (not- so impacting activities) only contributes more or less 20%, doesn't mean that we just have to abandon /discard those activities altogether, especially that those 80% are activities that are essential or directly dependent on that 20%. I think what we can get out of these is that we'll be aware of the disproportionate balance of the 20/80 while still going through that burdensome 80% activities - until we find a way not to be needing those things anymore, then we get more efficient eventually. just like success- it's not an overnight work.

Only based on personal experience, I think it's highly questionable to say that simply doubling the time you spend on enjoyable things will result in a doubling of happiness. Pretty much everybody is aware of the idea of diminishing returns - eg, the second hour you spend on something isn't quite as enjoyable as the first, the third not as enjoyable as the second, and so forth. Eventually it might not even be enjoyable at all. The book's logic seems to be that if we spend our time only on the initial 20% of things that make up 80% of our happiness, we could potentially increase our happiness 400%. It seems apparent to me based on life experience that this simply isn't the case.

There is bias at play here. Thats the problem with this assessment. It is much like the Marketing concept of funding. We know 50% of marketing is effective, we just don't know which 50%. in the example of podcasts in your past, that is merely a bias to those episodes that you found effective, not the entire library. There will be plenty of episodes that don't apply to you at all (which is its own 80-20 principle), so spending time on those will in fact be worse and may even taint your vision of the podcast overall. The 80-20 is meant for you to know what energizes you and make sure that you cherish those moments, not to get more out of it since there are deminishing returns and even burnout (never turn your hobby into a career, so to speak). You will waste your time. We all do. It is the awareness of that fact, not the overexposure to that fact, that makes this rule functional.

I've always though that while this is an interesting topic, couldn't we create huge lists of different distributions? For example, a bunch of things that follow a 70/30 principal or a 60/40 principal? Is this addressed in the book?

5:16 Hm, no. The essence of nutrition is variety. If you're eating a LOT of broccoli and avocado, some "junk food" probably does you some good. There are no "junk foods," just foods we have or have not eaten lately. (Look up the reasons chocolate was included in K Rations.) In developed countries, we see a lot more malnutrition from "orthorexia" -- people eating a small number of foods (i.e. macrobiotics) or avoiding entire food types (ultra low fat, ultra low carb, ultra high protein) rather than consuming a wide variety.

I disagree with this logic as the cost of hiring others to do your 80% things would be so costly and I doubt working more will make you more happy.
