Oh God... Nemesis Sub-Terra... I remember me and my mates at a school trip accidentally running out of a fire escape thinking that was the way we were meant to be going. It really broke the immersion of the story, being set miles underground, so it was funny just running out of a door into a wooded area of the UK.

I had a similar experience but I ran the to the entrance which wasn't there anymore as we had dropped down. And me and my mate were panicking because there was a timer counting down to when the door would be closed and I don't think we ever ran faster.

I was a part of the original scare actor team in 2012 and then 2013. Bloody great job, met some lovely people and I miss it quite a great deal. Granted not something you could do forever. It's a shame to see the ride die on its arse the way it did, but hopefully the new concept will breathe life back into it. Haven't been Towers in years so looking forward to coming back to see all the changes on the park. =)
@alaeriia016 жыл бұрын
Here's how I would have done the ride, assuming a huge budget. Guests enter the queue, which is themed to the Phalanx research facility. They wait in the lobby, where videos give them a primer into the history of Phalanx and the exciting new discovery below ground (backstory and basic ride experience). Groups of 40 are ushered into a room by a cast member, who gives a safety spiel before letting guests into the viewing lift (four rows of ten) and put on their shoulder harnesses. The lift descends a little bit, then stops. Lights go off, emergency red lighting comes on. Ride vehicle shakes as speakers play Evil Nemesis Creature Noises. Emergency lights flicker, go off, flicker again, then stay off as the ride vehicle plummets to the bottom of the 100-foot shaft, coming to rest in front of an animatronic of the creature, which "appears" as a jumpscare via strobes and loud noises. More interactive elements in darkness (leg ticklers, back prodders) as the crew above frantically work to get the elevator back up to safety; guests hear this through garbled radio chatter. Creature lunges for guests; elevator is brought back up just in time and guests are ushered off.

Alex Snitzer this sounds super cool! could maybe add some extra "levels". similar to how tower of terror has different drops. maybe at the beginning you drop a little to one level where you can see evidence of a monster or something trying to break into the "elevator" then it drops again to the point you mentioned. or maybe a part where you think you are going back up but the monster "grabs" the vehicle. idk i havent actually ever been to alton towers but i love scary themed rides and what you described sounds amazing!

I remember going on this ride accidentally with my friends dad (who I didn't really know too well), mistaking it for nemesis. One of the weirdest experiences I've ever had, all I can remember from the actual ride was just being shouted at a lot and wanting to get the hell out of there.

Off-topic but it was mentioned, I went into thirteen thinking it was a ghost train like the Darren brown one at Thorpe Park, the drop was an 'oh fuq' moment but I think the queue was scarier than the actual ride itself with the whole counting and the strange whispers and the lightning thing, the way they advertised it was so different though, I feel like thats also what they did here, everyone was hype for some super scary ride and it was just a bit disappointing.

I know this video is years old now, but I just got back from a trip to Alton and Nemesis Sub Terra is the exact same. The only difference I noted was that there were no scare actors during the decontamination escape area and the staff are no longer pushy, in fact they rarely speak to you at all other than giving instructions when loading the ride (one did point at my Zelda tattoo and sing the jingle tho) It was the off season while I was there so maybe they just had less staff overall and thats why the scare actors were not present. But since Nemesis Reborn has opened, they have "protestors" posted outside Sub Terra, questioning Phalanx's research.

It was boring, and on the day I rode it, the actors weren't convincing despite their best efforts. A spotty teen in a soldier uniform trying to shout orders at us all actually made it funny rather than scary. And there was no pay off at the end, the drop being tame and predictable. Just an over all poor concept. And it definitely didn't help that it was sat next to one of the best ride experiences in the world... Nemesis. They could have, just spent the money on an awesome (And badly needed) Flat ride. A Soriani and Moser "Transformer" with alien theming to fit in would still be thrilling crowds today....

Like what the great scholar Shawn Sanbrooke once said, it seems after the smiler crash, Alton towers and Blackpool pleasure beach switched places. Before the crash, Alton was on top of its game, the best British theme park and of the highest regard and Blackpool pleasure beach was in ruins, most of the rides standing but not operating and an overall mess. However, after the crash, Alton towers became in ruins and many rides SBNO while BPB became new, fresh, gets praises from enthusiasts and the GP alike. I just hope one day Alton gets back on their feet and the general public don't see it as "leg chop off land".
@Rachael89896 жыл бұрын
Scrambled 59 blimey, leg chop off land! I do agree though, both with you and Shawn. It upsets me that Alton Towers has got to the state it is now, especially when you watch back old videos from the 80s and 90s and it reminds you just what a fantastic place it was, and as you say, the number 1. It was such an amazing atmosphere with all the shows, street entertainment and fantastic rides around every corner. Now many corners are like eerie ghost towns. I will be so happy the day they return to glory, if that day ever does come (soon I hope!).
@COASTERBOT26 жыл бұрын
There's a stark difference between praises from the General Public and praises from enthusiasts, the prior 'we' don't really hear about. The admission numbers will reflect on how well BPB are doing, but prior to Icon that park still wasn't gaining large numbers despite a new found respect from enthusiasts. I think it's very interesting how every seems to forget the economics behind having a severe incident occur at a theme park. Towers numbers sank 25%, which equates to well more than 25% of the profit. No wonder Towers had to change. Hopefully with the rise of Wicker Man the park can regain momentum, investments, and praise.

I go almost every year and I’ve never even heard of this ride! I went on 20th September and there were workmen on the site of this ride, but there were no notices up as to what they were doing.

Oh I’m quite sad I didn’t realise it had been abandoned. I went when they added the scare maze and I was a lot younger and found it so fun haha. Haven’t been able to make another trip there since but looks like 2019 would be my year

Bet no one expected a Subterra comeback when this video came out, haha!

Watching this in 2023, it's crazy how a negative-rated ride (Nemesis Sub-Terra) returns. And a positive-rated ride (Hex) has been closed for very long, ongoing repairs...

Nemesis sub terra has been left on the map on the alton towers app, very interesting maybe they’ll reopen it next season

Btw as of the 2023 season I believe (might be wrong) Nemesis Sub-Terra was reopened and operates in what is now Phalanx valley.

TBF this did really shake me up when I went on it! I think they didn’t really get across that it was more of an experience than a ride, like Alien Encounter at Disney.

nemesis is still one of my all time favorites

The people in the suits whilst the lights flashed and you walked down the corridor literally freaked my 10 year old self out so much, I came out white and on the brink of tears ahaha

Thanks for the video! I had no money for visiting theme parks while I was at university so I completely missed this one. Seems underwhelming but would've been nice to ride it once.

Those back rods were frankly painful and hated every second off it. Glad it closed

After the changes I really enjoyed Sub-Terra. Visiting with my school friends when we were 15 was a great experience.

I was at Alton Towers the week before the Smiler accident and went on Nemesis Sub Terra then, I remember it being pretty much identical to Stitches Great escape and as mentioned the Alien Extraterrestrial Encounter (pretty sure I went on that in a UK theme park though not Florida -unless it was in Disney when I went in 1997) and to be honest I don't remember the 20 foot drop at all so that shows how much of an impression it made on me.

This ride terrified me! I was only around 13/14 when I was forced on by my oldest cousin- some of our group wanted us to suffer so asked the actors to target us- I then went through the ride absolutely terrified and after I came out and walked through the mini scare maze I had to be pushed out by a member of our group as I fell to the floor- tears streaming and on came the panic attack...that being said now in my 20’s I absolutely love scare mazes! From a younger point of view this ride was brilliant however looking back on it now I can see why lots of people complained!

There was only one lap bar for everyone on each row on that ride and that is a huge flaw considering that not everybody's sizes are the same. I went to project 42 on this year's scarefest preview night and I have to say that it was awesome.

Not many. The entrance sign, some minor changes. But the whole thing it's the same... I actually enjoyed it. The problem it's that it's still very short. Needs something else, hopefully sometime in the future they expand it with more maze parts or scenes

I like zombies and stuff so when I went on it for scarefest I was surprised that the ride was still there except it wasn't functioning. The egg was still there by the way it was immersive most of the old ride was there like the lift and the opening area with minor new parts like vines and zombies sadly I never got to ride on the actual ride only videos off youtube. The scaremaze is great though
@hdhdhdhdhdhj4 жыл бұрын
By the way the lift doesn't work now you just walk through it

I never rode it as I never saw any advertisement for it and didn't know what it was, it was only after it had closed that I learnt it was a drop ride, tbh I've learnt more in this video then anywhere else. I'm going to Alton on Halloween itself and can't wait to go to the scare maze.
