That place was a vibrant and thriving town when my pops was a kid. He was born in a shack in the hills outside of town, along with his older brothers and a couple half sisters. They had no electricity or plumbing. But the town was still a riverboat boomtown when he was a kid, and they were well known for their “peppersauce” (local moonshine) that families like my dads made. The railroad killed the town, basically. And the family moved to eastern Washington to work orchards when he was in high school... and they still didn’t have an indoor toilet. It’s so crazy to think how much has changed just in my lifetime, from hanging out with granddad in the early 70s hearing stories of “the olden days”, to typing this on a touchscreen while watching the ghost of my fathers hometown. RIP pops. ❤️

Back in 1972 & 73 my Dad , Bob Heinrich then mayor of Concord , AR. bought the old steam engine that was located just behind the feed store. My dad bought me a saddle from that feed store and give it to me that Christmas. The engine that we removed from there was so big that it took another engine just to start that engine. The flywheel was so large that I hauled it by itself on a trailer we used to haul our HD6 Allis Chalmers bulldozer on. I pulled it with a F-750 V-8 gas burner single axle Ford tractor that we bought from H.D. Bailey Ford sales in Batesville. The road to Mt. View was still a dirt road until you got on top of Sylamore Mt. were the road to the Folk Center is now or Hurple Rd. It took us 4 trips to move the entire engine to Concord. At that time it was quite a job but we prevail despite the obstacles that we encountered. Quite an experience for a 15 year old and my Dad. He later sold the engine to someone in Brandon or Springfield MO. I wish now we had taken more pictures but those we did take are long since lost thru time. I hope you enjoyed the story. Sincerely Danny J. Heinrich / PO Box 36 / Concord , AR.

All abandoned. Well not really. They do have a penitentiary full. And more waiting to move in. I drove threw this town every week. It's a nice town. Good place to live. I like not having all the traffic and crap going on. I do not live here. But was here weekly. GREAT FISHING. And national geographic filmed a show here for a few seasons. Good people. Good town. Nice people and friendly.

Then you were in the wrong area...the funeral home is actually haunted. I took my sister and her boyfriend in it and we ask for a response to our knocking, and we did get a response. I also took a photo and got what looks to be, 2 young children looking at us from behind one of the post...it was awesome

Calico Rock, the town, moved uphill in early 30-40's to avoid yearly destruction of the town businesses by flooding before the Norfolk dam was built. This old part is still there downhill of current town.

My great, great Uncle Squire Callaway, his wife, Mary, and their daughter, Billie, lived here after the Civil War. Squire and Mary have graves behind the Menonite Church. The little cemetery is in someone's back yard now and they have restored and preserved the headstones of theirs and others who were buried there in the late 1800's. Billie married, moved to New Mexico, then to southern California, where she passed away many, many years later. Sadly, tracking Squire from a genealogy standpoint is difficult. Don't know where they lived in Calico Rock.

I visited Calico Rock and the last time I was there in the hot summer we drove up on a horse mounted officer armed with a rifle and wearing mirrored sunglasses watching over a group of prisoners wearing all white while they worked using swing blades clearing empty lots that were overgrown. I took lots of pictures and encountered a man who we talked to for a while and he explained to us that he lived in a cave system on the side of the mountain. It was really hot so we had stopped to give him a bottle of water. He was a very unique man that didn't say much but what he said was we sure were lucky to be be together as he had lost his wife . We traveled back several summers kinda looking to see him but we never did.
