no, that's a bad way to tie straps. the rubrail is not designed for load securement. its main purpose is to protect straps and trailer itself from damage. i like using flat hook straps because i can thread behind the rubrail and then hook the flathook underneath - to the winch rail. chain end straps are more secure but they're heavier and cost twice as much as flat hook straps.

You never secure your load to the rub rail. It is not designed to handle loads. You hook to the underside of the trailer deck or the trailer frame.

It should also be mentioned that the winches won't work/tighten when they or the trailer are upside down - ask me how I know :D As for space hauling, it's a non-issue for me as I don't have license or medical for it. Besides I hear return freight is pretty slim.

When you throw straps OVER the load and hook it on both sides of the trailer, the strap works best at angles of 90% to the deck. So a big box where the strap goes down to the deck almost vertically will stay put as if welded to the deck. The lower the angle between the strap and the floor, the worse is the effect. What I do with sheets of steel sometimes is put WOOD TIMBERS ON TOP AND tension straps (good) or chains (better) over that. Trailer wheels don't like winches either ;)

Are you talking about chaining tires for ice and snow covered roads? If yes, then I don't do that. I tried it ONCE in Denver CO a few years ago and it took me FOUR HOURS to cover 200 miles, which is a total waste of time. It's always best to park the rig and wait out the bad weather at a cozy hotel with a big fireplace ;)

People keep asking me WHAT IS HOLDING STRAPS INSIDE WINCHES. At first I thought they were kidding but then I realized that a trucking winch is indeed a small wonder. For one, it would never work on the Moon or inside a space shuttle. Learn why from the vid.

Man, this is one of the best informational videos that I have ever seen. No kidding. Thanks so much. I knew some of that, but I had never heard of the stake pocket winches or that you couldn't use sliding winches over your drive axles. Two questions: Is the same true of the trailer axles or not? And also, how close to the deck can your load be before these types of winches are useless. For example, if you have only a couple sheets of flat steel, would these work?

Hello Sergie! Another Question. When strapping, does it matter if you thread the strap through the rail space then back up so that the strap hook lays on the top of the rail just like you mentioned about the chain hook. Or doesn't it matter? Thanks Again! Great vids!

No Sergie . The chaining I was talking about was when your hauling a tractor or generators with wheels. I saw you crossed your chain down to the flat bed. Can you go over that a little more. Thx Greg

A small adjustment on the space winch would be to add a MAGNET where the dog hits the teeth to pull it down. NASA, if you guys ever need to hold a FLATBED SECUREMENT CLASS for your astronauts, I'm available.

I have a winch that locks on combing rail. It seems to keep getting loose even when i use a long bar to tension it. Any ideas?
