Had a Gin Mill here in WNY that made an open faced Rueben. The rye virtually covered the plate. The corned beef IMO needs to be sliced very thin. Nothing special -- good bread, meat, kraut, swiss and dressing. Surrounded by golden crisp crinkle cut fries.

Nothing wrong at all with an open faced Reuben! The Carnegie Deli served 'em that way, with the dressing on the side. I appreciated both ideas, 'cause the sandwich was heavenly, with or without dressing. These days, it's Manny's for me. That's an excellent operation, and Geno, the master carver, is a first-class guy with over 40 years on the bench. You won't be disappointed, believe me.

Never got the Reuben at Carnegie Deli but I did visit them in 2008 before they closed. Those Reubens were the largest I’d ever seen. I just got a Grilled cheese but even that had 9 or 10 slices of cheese. Over the top loaded. Wish they were still around!

There was a deli in Baltimore near the waterfront that made a corned beef on rye sandwich every 10 seconds. There was always a line going out into the street. This was in 1979. A whole kosher pickle was a dollar extra.

Norton's was the worst. They didn't keep the meat in a steamer like deli's. They kept the meat in a pot with liquid, then grilled it. I've never seen that at any place besides Norton's. Katz, Langers and Attmans are superior to Nortons and it's no comparison.

#1. You have to squeeze the kraut hard to get all of the water out. My dad had a Deli when I was in high school. Reubens, Muffaletta, roast beef po boys, fried shrimp po boys, you name it. Im 50 now and my homemade pastrami Reubens are thick and off the chain. 👍😪

In Virginia Beach, Virginia there was a place called Route 58 Deli which had the best reuben menu I had ever encountered. I would have stacked them against anyone on your list. Unfortunately, the owners died and the kids, reportedly, didn't want anything to do with the family business.

It's a happy food, if you are ever having a bad day, you can take a bite and boom - no more sadness, maybe it's the memories, maybe the harmony of ingredients, perhaps It's because the name is Rueben, like Paul Rueben - the beloved Pre Wee Herman. I LOVE everything about a Reuben except the Rye bread. I hate the taste of Rye (no offense to those who love it). So, at home I make a "Weuben" which is all the same wonderful insides as a Reuben except on Wheat bread.... And Corned Beef is the meat! I love it!

The only problem with making "my own" is that most all deli-style meat (yes, even the much touted B's Head) is usually tasteless ! The only way to get around that is to smoke your own brisket on a grill for 18 hours or brine your pastrami in a vat for two days.......

While it was certainly invented at the Blackstone, Crescent Moon no longer does it justice. It's safe to assume the cooking staff has never had a real Reuben. They take too many shortcuts and use inferior bread. Using that gimmicky crap marble bread on a it has Reuben Kulakofsky spinning in his grave.

Twenty one years ago when I married My wife I decided to make My favorite sandwich (Reuben)ever thing that goes into the Reuben -corned beef, sauerkraut,Swiss cheese, Thousand island dressing ,on rye bread then grilled. Was stuff My wife said she didn’t like so I made two sandwiches for Myself and kept saying how good they were My wife said said She would try it needless to say it is now her favorite sandwich. P.S.if You make these with Pastrami then it’s a Pastrami sandwich .if You use any other meat instead of corned beef then it’s not a Reuben.

Well I'm the odd one out. Love a Reuben, however I prefer corned beef not pastrami and I like it sliced real thin. Some of these joints pile so much on it's like saying I want a quarter pounder with 6 beef patties. Ridiculous build. Another factor - A local restaurant used huge slices of rye bread and built a Reuben served open faced - now that had double the toppings and was knife an fork material / served with golden crinkle cut fries. Oh - I don't have any available deli's but KOSHER corned beef was the prize. Haven't had anything comparable by me for better than 20 yrs.

In my limited experience, and the area in which I live, there are virtually NO restaurants that give a sh*t about putting any care and passion into making a proper Rueben sandwich. I can beg for extra sauerkraut and still get almost next to none. The bread is boring and the corned beef is usually packaged deli-style and dry. The best Rueben in the world is the one I can make from scratch - at home!

IMPERFECT VIDEO! Half of the sandwiches featured in Mashed's "Rueben Mashup" aren't even Rueben Sandwiches! They might be take-offs, send-offs, one-offs and reimagined, but they are NOT RUEBENS. First of all, it's a Jewish deli specialty, not to be found in Italian delis with capicola and mortadella. If it has fish, it's not a Rueben, it's a FISH SAMMIE! If it doesn't have Russian or Thousand Island dressing, it's not a Rueben, it's a dry mouthful. It needs that little bit of sweetness provided by that shmear of ketchup, mayo, egg and relish. Cheese MUST be Swiss (emmentaler). Horrible substituting mozzarella or Colby. Cole slaw instead of sauerkraut throws the sweetness off, ruins the effect of the Thousand Island dressing. The pickle? It HAS to be half-sour. Crisp and refreshing. I have eaten so many great, authentic ones and just enough fake, pretenders to appreciate the great delis of my youth, Rascal House, Wolfies, Juniors...

Let me start by saying I don't like sauerkraut or Thousand Island dressing, whenever my Mother would cook sauerkraut I would leave the house for several hours. One time I was traveling to Kansas City for a company event and I was stuck in the Atlanta Airport waiting for my flight to board. Knowing that there would be no meals on this leg of my journey I decieted to grab something quick for the flight from one of the deli's in the airport. I grabbed a reuben sandwich on the fly not knowing what it was made of. After boarding and reaching altitude I was able to relax and open my sandwich, I ordered a Heineken from the flight attendant and started to eat my sandwich. To this day, that was the best sandwich I have ever had in my entire life. It was perfection. And I still don't like sauerkraut or Thousand Island dressing.

No doubt every reuben in this and other reuben videos has it's merits and fans, but the further West you go after the Mississippi, the more you're getting away from the true reuben sandwich. Like Langer's Deli in L.A. puts a twist on the reuben by not having Russian dressing, hoping you're blown away by the quality of the meat. Sorry, that's a CA thing, and it may even taste great, but it's definitely NOT a bonafide reuben. It's a twist on the reuben. The East coast is where it's at for this sandwich. Sorry if you disagree.

While anyone can certainly call a sandwich anything they like, when you start putting so many twists on the original sandwich so it's almost unrecognizable as that sandwich, it now need a different name, or at the very least a name that salutes (but is not the same as) the original sandwich. I think it would help maintain the precision of our language (our heritage) to a degree if restaurants and eateries say they're putting a twist or paying homage to the original sandwich instead of stealing its fame when it's no longer like the original. They screw musicians like this all the time when a band takes a song and puts a complete twist on it in their own fashion and never pay homage publicly to the original songwriter(s). They're stealing the song and trying to make it sound like it's theirs. It's legal but it's real wrong.

This is largely bullshit. You claim "greatest Reuben" and you present a bunch of places making crappy versions "with a twist". The Reuben is a perfect sandwich. It doesn't need a "twist". If it's not Swiss, Kraut, Corned Beef, Thousand Island, on Dark Rye or Pumpernickel (no crappy marble bread!), it ain't a Reuben. Nor is it impressive to load up a Reuben with tons of meat. It is a culinary fallacy to assume that: If X is good, then 5X is great! A Reuben is all about balance. And while we're on the subject, Generation Snowflake seems to have lost its taste for sauerkraut -- most all these places drain the hell out of it. That's a rookie mistake.
