Just watched this Christmas eve after the traditional Chinese food dinner. Wanted to show my kids this mess. Think I was 9 years old when this came out. To say I was pumped that there was a Star Wars special on TV was an understatement. Was so very confused watching this train wreck. Wookies growling at each other for two hours straight. I had forgotten about this and just thought it was a fever dream from my youth. Thanks to the internet it lives on. One thing I didn't notice as a kid was Luke. I mean Lumpy was straight nightmare fuel to me back then, but Luke's makeup and vacant unblinking stare was soooo creepy.

I got to watch it when it aired on tv. The nostalgia for me is remembering how excited we were for new Star Wars... It's not that the whole thing is canon, just the specific elements that get reused. It's kind of clever, what they're doing... Current writers can basically pick and choose among all the weirdness from the first 30 years of Star Wars for the good bits, while ignoring the stuff that didn't work or gets in the way. The Disney canon wipe has basically functioned like a low-key Crisis event, in practice. (I mean, "Solo" name-dropped Teras Kasi of all things, and that game wasn't strictly canon even at the time.)

Think of it this way: The Holiday Special is the MOST IMPORTANT thing in the SW universe. Why? It was the first thing that officially made Star Wars a "going concern". Before this, it was a movie. But with this, the characters and the settings proved that they had life beyond just the movie. The special cemented Star Wars as a BRAND, not just a film. It showed there was more out there than we'd yet seen. This is the first thing that appeard as a continuation, almost a sequel, of the original movie. It's not a standalone thing. It is set firmly after Ep. 4 and before Ep.5, and it interacts with them. So, while it is awful, and funny in a very bad way, it's also supremely important. I proved that Star Wars was a brand that could be adapted to various kinds of media and could even take a beating... even if it was from itself. I don't know about you, but to me that makes it more cannon than any of the three new movies.

"It wasn't what the fans wanted to see..." What the fans really want to see? A BluRay set of the original trilogy in its original format. Han Shot First!!!!

This year I asked my niece what she wanted to watch on tv. She said "..." so I led her with "Star Wars?"; she then said "Star Wars!". So I put on the Christmas Special which, no one else in my family had ever seen before and I began to laugh hysterically for the next hour until someone else HAD TO turn it off before everyone's brains exploded. Now my niece seems to love it and insists we watch it whenever anyone asks what we should all watch. Hahahahahahahaha

I’d still rather watch it than the last Jedi.

And I'd rather watch last jedi over rise of Mary Sue

I think I still have my bootleg VHS of this somewhere. Picked it up from a convention 20-odd years ago. made the whole family watch it on Christmas day. It's very rare they let me pick what we watch anymore.

That show is so underappreciated, even by Lego. You'd think a series made to sell toys would sell more toys, but somehow it shockingly didn't have more sets. Even when it had a tie in activity book, it just came with a generic trooper character instead of anyone from the series. And Graballa the Hutt didn't even get a figure. We have a Star Wars character with Master Shake's VA basically playing Master Shake as a Hutt. That ALONE is worth watching the series.

That sounds like it needs a worker's comp claim.

Animated part with Boba Fett was pretty cool imo. And it was the biggest amount of screen time he got before Mando. (Edit) Also, I just learned that it was supposed to look like Moebius's comics, whom I really admire. I never really got that, but it may be why I like that short film.
