100% agree with the Dr Phil take. it's a modern 'freak show'. not helping anyone, just exploiting them for entertainment. Feel the same about Jerry Springer, Jeremy Kyle, and all of the other shows following that formula. Never understood how anyone would want to air their private issues on live TV like that.
@wardenm Жыл бұрын
For REAL. The success of Springer back then really changed media, for the worse. That whole... sensationalizing people's trauma, exploiting those blinded by the momentary fame and finding ways to aggravate their problems... It worked though. Ratings were through the roof and people got addicted to that endorphin high of feeling better than those on screen. It really started to shift daytime television and audiences towards more nonsense like Dr Phil, and the final evolution being all the drama filled reality tv we see now.

As a long-time fan of South Park, I have to say that Butters is perhaps one of the most tragically relatable characters in the series. It’s both hilarious and heartbreaking to watch how he’s constantly victimized by his friends and even his own parents. The writers have expertly crafted a character that embodies innocence and vulnerability, which makes his endless suffering all the more impactful. Just think about it-Butters represents the way we often treat those who are kind-hearted and naive. In many respects, his experiences reflect real-life bullying and the often harsh nature of growing up. His misadventures serve not only to elicit laughter but also to provoke thought about how we can treat others with kindness instead of cruelty. Yet, even amidst the darkest moments of Butters’ abuse, he maintains a certain resilience that’s endearing. He may be the butt of the joke more often than not, but he rises above it with a unique charm. The episode where he pretends to be a superhero is a prime example of how he copes with the abuse-by creating a world where he can feel empowered, if only for a moment. I also can’t help but admire the creativity that goes into his storylines; they are bizarre yet somehow poignant. Whether it’s the time he got mistaken for a girl in a plot twist or when he gets involved in some outlandish scheme spearheaded by Cartman, Butters' character always finds a way to shine even when surrounded by chaos. In a strange way, Butters makes us reflect on our own behavior. How many times have we laughed at the misfortune of others without considering the impact of those actions? The series expertly balances humor with a critique of human nature, pushing us to consider the consequences of our actions. While I find myself chuckling at the absurdity of some scenes, there's this underlying awareness of the message being conveyed. Sure, South Park thrives on shock value and absurdity, but it’s moments like these that add depth to the humor. In conclusion, Butters’ abuse may be played for laughs, but it also sheds light on deeper social issues that resonate with many viewers. It reminds us to be more compassionate and to stand up for those who might be too vulnerable to do so themselves. So, while we can all appreciate the humor derived from Butters' unfortunate escapades, let’s also take a moment to think about the lessons hidden beneath the chaos. After all, we could all use a little more kindness in the world-if only to give Butters a break!
@paradocks23 Жыл бұрын
They didn't mention the most messed up part of the anime episode: After the Vet thinks he's a dog, he determines that the only course of action is to put Butters down. In the morning. So they lock him in a cage for the evening.
