I think my favorite aspect of Celeste speedrunning is the beautiful relationship it has with the intended mechanics of the game; most of the speedrun tech was even programmed intentionally. Like, save for a few death skips, speedrunning Celeste is far less about exploiting errors and more about getting really, really good at the core play style of Celeste.

9:05 He isn’t actually dodging the spikes hitboxes. He’s using a hard coded mechanic of the game where, if you going the same direction as a spike is facing, it won’t damage you. This allows for stuff like one way dream blocks, but can also be used like this where he just barely can wall jump off of the wall. This is usually why speedrunners have 2-3 jump keys binded.

16:20 it's so weird to say this is "developer error" - the team are so aware of speed running and have built so much around these techniques, I think they're very aware that good players will find ways to bypass and find new routes through screens
@isaiahisaiahisaiah1 Жыл бұрын
yeah I thought that as well. like one of the aims for the game was literally to make it as speedrun friendly as possible.
@fynn2350 Жыл бұрын
Fun fact: There is one skip they patched out. Initially you could "Skip cutscene" in the prologue in a way that would immediately end it when the bird tells you how to dash. However, this also skipped the screen saying "You can do this" and this message was so important to the devs that they patched the game. Now you can still skip the cutscene of the bird cawing at you, but the message always shows up. So yes, they absolutely pay attention to all the speedrun shenanigans, but usually they embrace it, e.g. by adding a crouch-dash macro as a new optional key.
@deuceditton2574 Жыл бұрын
The actual reason for that patch was that it was a frame perfect trick that saved several seconds, leading people to reset runs for it a lot, which wasn’t an enjoyable experience. The fact that they wanted the “you can do this” message to appear was involved as that was the original reason for the cutscene being “unskippable”, and they made it still appear post-patch, but they were more interested in making the start of runs less reset heavy
@xanastarYT Жыл бұрын
@@deuceditton2574 either way, you definitely add to the point that the devs are quite involved in the speedrunning community when making changes and walk the line between intent and helping them out rather than doing things like that carelessly or out of error

And even with some of the things that genuinely were oversights such as demodashes, Maddy embraced them and incorporated them into the Farewell DLC and made them easier to make keybinds for & perform. Celeste isn't the average game where most of the skips and speed tricks are dev oversight.

(3/17/23) This started when I was in a conversation in the Celeste discord, where some people were talking about some inconsistencies in this video. I then took it upon myself to point out every one (for some goddamn reason). I was never trying to be toxic at all, but looking back on it it does seem very passive aggressive and generally just annoying. This definitely shouldn’t have been a comment I should have made, I just did it because why not and like thats not a good reason. Because I’m not an asshole i tried to highlight the video at the end but in turn that came off as even more passive aggressive, which is not a good thing I still think that this comment is helpful, but half of these aren’t even things wrong with the video, but just scouring for anything wrong I could find. I’ll leave the actual comment down below, but just know that I’m not very proud of it anymore lmao Some nitpicks 0:04 - its 25m, 59s, 070ms, not 26m 2:05 - the video shows wavedashing, not hypers 2:23 - thats a cornerboost 2:27 - thats a cornerkick, not a cornerboost 3:49 - its not really that much of a problem, theres still a significant delay between you and badeline. Only case i could see is the room before the long drop. 4:28 - People go for tas awake all the time; also you showed a message from 2018 which at that time i assume tas awake was much harder and people didnt know as much about the game as we do now 4:43 - Isaac, not Issac 4:53 - he went for tas awake then failed it 5:58 - aaa its not sludge its dust bunnies 7:40 - a tiny bit misleading, it is pixel perfect yes but only in some cases 8:43 - the reverse extended super is a extended demohyper, not super 9:00 - wind does matter a lot in runs at least personally, there are some cases where wind can screw you over, and you still have to take wind in account for everything you do 9:06 - thats not pixel perfect, its relatively lenient and is used in mid level runs as well. 9:09 - he doesnt avoid the hitbox - in fact he goes inside of it. if you go the same direction the spikes face in, they dont kill you. this is also used in Huge Mess of Resort 10:26 - i dont know what pixel perfect walljump you are refering to here, but nothing past the cornerboost is 10:57 - those are wavedashes, not hypers 12:30 - thats a wallbounce, not a wallboost 12:49 - thats several cornerboosts, not a "spiked staircase climb" 12:58 - thats a seeker, not a corrupter 14:09 - while technically true, spinners only cut off 1 or 2 pixels (im not exactly sure?). The reason this works is because wallbounces have leniency pixels which allow you to wallbounce off of a wall even if you arent directly on it. 14:22 - you also ultra here 14:53 - Reprieve Multiboost isnt necessarily a tech by itself, multiboosts are. this one just happens to occur in reprieve, and is also the only one usually found in the main any% run 15:05 - he did these strats in his former pb, so i don't get the point of this comment? 15:46 - in the block boosted ultra you showed here theres no hyper 16:29 - thats just a regular cornerboost, theres no superdash coming into play 17:46 - ASS is much, much easier than 2nd blockless 19:30 - again just a misedit, its 25 minutes 19:35 - fun fact secure got the wr 25:55 on like 1/10 i think? not really your fault here but just wanted to mention it i dont want to try to dogpile on you (people have already made similar comments) i just want to point out some nitpicks with the video. While I'm still sure it's not pixel perfect, the fact that you are moving away from the wall does only give you a short window. If you're too late, you won't die sure, but you also won't jump.

@@pirilon78 6 frames sounds short as a reaction time to something happening, but yeah as something you plan for in advance it's not that bad. A lot of the tech names were mixed up like calling a cornerkick a corner boost and a wavedash a hyperdash but that's not that important honestly. The cornerkick in the shrine section of ridge isn't pixel perfect, it works by moving in the same direction as the spikes are pointing (moving the same direction as spikes doesn't kill you because they wanted things like spiked jumpthrough and dreamblocks to be possible), Isaac wasn't ahead of his PB during reflection exit, his best exit was a sub 18. As someone familiar with all of these mechanics, I am impressed by how simple yet correct you explained them. Very nice to watch!
@Nuggling2 жыл бұрын
actually he butchered alot of them

He butchered all of them. If you actually think he did any of these right, I don’t think you quite know what you’re talking about.
@timbakker3712 жыл бұрын
Ok, fine, since you apparently need a more constructed comment instead of a compliment towards the video creator: Yes, I know they didn't get everything perfectly right, but instead they explained the mechanics well enough so that a non-experienced Celeste player could understand the run much better. To me, it's clear that this is exactly what this video is trying to accomplish. As an experienced Celeste player, nitpicking every detail of it is entirely pointless because you aren't the target audience. The video isn't perfect, but it is very good

I remember the last minute barrier being broken, as I'd just finished beating the game for the first time Wow things have come so far since then

9:08 "Where he barely avoids the hitbox" Huh, that's incorrect. The spikes only kill you if you're moving towards them. In that scenario Madeline is moving away from the spikes, which is why she doesn't die when touching them. The same behavior can be observed in some dream blocks that have spikes on one edge so you can get out of the dream blocks through the spikes but can't go back because the spikes would kill you if you move in that direction

Don’t bother, he gets almost everything wrong and doesn’t really care. I don’t have ocd but this video made me go insane

This is a speedrunning video on the history of speedrunning Celeste. Very well done.

16:28 That is just a normal cornerboost, not at superdash. If it was a superdash, there would be speed rings behind Madeline.

Making Celeste videos will attract about ten times as many viewers as Spelunky 2 videos do.

i just finished the game and watched this video, i don`t know what to say, this is just absurd. Congratz man, this is quite impressive, the level of precision you must have to not make a single mistake.

idk if I might be reading ur comment wrong but this guy isn't actually the speedrunner, he's just explaining someone else's speedrun

The best part is that when you do a really hard strat, and you pull it off flawlessly

Let alone the execution, it’s mind boggling to me people can remember the exact layout of every level for 25+ minutes.

You NEED to cover the 202 and/or 100% deathless Celeste runs. I've watched the entire 202 deathless run and it was a wild ride. Constantly on the edge of my seat with all the risky jumps and fast paced gameplay - while also trying not to die a single time!

The 10:25 autoscroller skip is crazy. It's always said that if you are precise enough you can technically jump through spikes but he... did. Must have taken hours of practice. -sincerely Uel

A lot of these speedrun strats are actually intended! An example I'm certain of is at 17:50, the devs talked about this in a GDQ TAS of all red berries. Getting the key like that is intended, but doing the same for the berry isn't. You can see this in the fact that the spike tunnel to the key has a tiny extension to the wall at the bottom left, while the same isn't mirrored on the berry side. Just thought I'd let you know, cause it's aweomse how much thought was put into the speedrunning capabilities of this game. So much of this tech and these strats were known and planned.
