Few people knows how difficult this movie was to make. The breathing liquid it's a real technology that have been proposed for very deep diving and it's still in develop. Joy is right about fishes, you are so deep that you'll find life at the bottom where they can find nutrients. The deepest point are the Mariana islands abyss at 11.000 meters deep. My guess, as a former biology student is that the "aliens" are not aliens. They match the anatomy and proposed biology of some deep water jellyfish, but evolved and intelligent, sort of a second intelligent species for our planet. This movie is also the first time they made a photorealistic CGI animation, the "Water wiener" like the movie team named it 😅 Great video guys!

If you haven't yet, you should read the accompanying novel (not written after but with the movie) by Orson Scott Card, he explains a lot about how the "aliens" think, when and why they came, and that the situation is much more complex than what we see on the screen.

An interesting bit if info about the breathing liquid: 1. it brings you O2 but not as good at allowing you to expel CO2 so it has its limitations. 2. it feels like drowning the entire time. :(

By the time the movie was out I was in high school, I'm chilean, we didn't even had a land line telephone at that time 😸 there was a time when this movie was almost imposible to find and less chance to get the novel, that I can say in my defense 🤗 I'll try to get it, thanks for the advice!

YES! Two of my favorite people reacting to my favorite sleeper hit! I was in college (and mostly broke) in 1989-90, and at some point during that year, this movie showed up at the student theater, where they got older movies for lower cost and only charged students a buck. I had no idea what I was in for, but as a kid who saw Close Encounters about 10 times in the theater, this was right up my street. I walked out of there just stunned. And that was the original, shorter version.

The difference between this version and the original theatrical version is the entire conversation between Bud and the aliens...and the tsunami. The theatrical release goes from the water parting (so Bud can breathe) to the "city" rising to the surface.

I love all your reactions. You all are so perceptive. This is one of my 15 favorite science-fiction movies. Bud’s descent into the abyss is my favorite scene---so profoundly moving. The science in this movie is real. The breathable liquid is real, as described, and the rat in the film really did what we see (it wasn’t faked). The cold-water drowning effect, called the “mammalian diving reflex,” is also true. It was announced to the public by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in a 1974 press release (I have an original copy), but weirdly is still little known by most people. Many people have survived up to half an hour, and I think the record is nearly one hour. My favorite cousin was in the submarine service for 30 years (the last 10 on shore) and crossed the North Pole once in a nuclear sub. When I was a kid he told me about their training, which included lots of simulation drills for closing the hatch against the force of the water pushing into the compartment. Very scary stuff.

This is one of my all-time favorite movies (in my top 5) and I am THRILLED that you're reacting to the Special Edition. I feel that you guys are very thoughtful in your reactions and I loved hearing your ideas about the film and its meaning. The Special Edition was first seen on the DVD release- it wasn't released in theaters because back then movie studios felt that audiences wouldn't want to see a movie that was too long (is a movie really too long if it uses its time wisely and keeps things going?). The subplot about humanity being on the brink of World War III was completely cut from the movie. I would urge you to seek out the novelization, which was written by Orson Scott Card, which gives even more backstory and more context about the characters. There is also an incredible documentary on the making of the movie, because there were techniques and technology that were developed just to make this movie possible. Thank you so much for sharing this reaction with us, I am so happy to see this underrated (at least in comparison with James Cameron's other films) movie get some attention.

I would want you to watch one of James Cameron's more recent movies, Alita Battle Angel. You'll be pleasantly surprised. Technically, it was James Cameron's long term project to make the Alita Battle Angel movies, but he also had the idea for the Avatar movies. He realized he had to pick one of the two and Avatar won out by a flip of a coin. But he always intended to make the Alita movies, he simply never found the time. At some point, Robert Rodriguez asked James Cameron if he had any projects he could work on and so we finally got Alita Battle Angel, at a time when audiences were jaded against movies based on anime/manga and when most were saving their money and time to see the Marvel movies. So, it wasn't a huge box office success, making just under what studios would have deemed worthy of sequels. That said, because the movie was so well made and streaming audiences have gradually been seeing the movie, word of mouth has spread and it's acquired a big fan following. In recent months, James Cameron has revealed he's working more and more on the sequels and they will eventually be made.

The main difference between the theatrical and special editions is all the stuff about the world being on the brink of war, and the aliens using tidal waves to scare the world into behaving. All of that is missing from the theatrical version. The military guys still go get the nuke and their leader still goes nuts and tries to use it, but none of the surface stuff is included. This was filmed in a giant water tank that they covered, so the light wouldn't show. Cameron wanted his actors to be able to talk while in the water (traditional SCUBA gear has a mouthpiece), and he wanted to be able to see their faces, so he designed the special helmets that they wear in the movie. They were actually fully functional. Not sure if they'd work THAT deep underwater though. The breathing fluid is a real thing, but... They can't use it on humans, The scene with the rat was real, because it can work in small animals. Human lungs are too large and it's a problem trying to get the fluid back out. Also, they have no way to clean the fluid, so as it passes in and out of a person's nose and mouth, it gets contaminated.

The extended cut has: Friedrich Nietzsche quote in the beginning Bud on the phone, "I'm a calm person....WHAT?!" The crew singing a Linda Ronstadt song Lindsey asking Bud why he kept his wedding ring Lindsey telling a sappy candle story to Bud while he goes down the trench Everything about the huge tidal wave. Longer interaction with the aliens in the city with clips of bombs and humans being meanies The pioneering visual effects of the water tentacle made Terminator 2 possible. The underwater shots were made in a huge tank covered with black beads filled with air to block out the sunlight. This was an extraordinarily difficult movie to make.

Thank you for watching the Special Edition. The theatrical version cuts out an entire subplot, and the entire worldwide tidal wave sequence. The inclusion of the subplot and the tidal wave sequence, along with the expansion of the aliens monitoring the horrible things humans do to each other, makes the conclusion of the movie make more sense. In my opinion, the theatrical version takes a huge, unexplained leap and the conclusion of the movie suffers for it. Not sure if you caught it, but Coffey was suffering from high pressure nervous syndrome, which causes the shaking that he exhibited initially. Other symptoms include myoclonic jerking (involuntary twitching of muscles), somnolence (sleepiness and drowsiness), EEG changes, visual disturbance, nausea, dizziness, and decreased mental performance. The decreased mental performance is particularly on display as the movie progresses and Coffey's actions start to make less and less sense, and his paranoia increases.

Video: I wonder how they filmed this type of movie? They found an abandoned nuclear power plant/stack, built the set 20 feet from the bottom with a cliff face and then poured water to the top and then proceeded to film all the underwater scenes underwater.

No actor turns in a better performance in any film of theirs. This has two of my three favorite 'death scenes' ever. (Along with BORDER INCIDENT, 1947, a thriller with George Murphy being the victim after being caught as an undercover agent in a long death-by-combine that outdoes Hitch's tension levels.)

This is a BIG SCREEN Must-See film. Ed Harris' long, long swim back with her is powerful beyond imagination. And anyone reduced to seeing this on TV, without a huge theatre audience sucking ALL the air out fo the theater, castrates so much tension and power.

Should see the making of this, the part when she drowned and he had to slap her, James C actually made him strangle her and hit her . she eventually said fk this after the camera ran out of tape and they filmed rest of his reactions from below while he was crushing something other than a human :D

I saw this movie in theaters when it first came out and the difference between that and the directors cut is that the version I saw in theaters had a lot less of the aliens at the end. This version focused more on the anti-war aspect of the story. I think this version that you guys watched was better.

I always find it hilarious, when people _(= humans)_ assume, aliens would be "understanding" and "willing to help", once they discover us - simply because they are higher developed. Ask yourself a question: going by just about EVERYTHING you have learned about history, and how it ALWAYS ended for the "newly discovered natives"...what exactly makes you think, things would turn out differently, when we as a whole are the "newly discovered natives"? Especially in sight of our archived history.

Making of The Abyss is on youtube and it's fascinating how they filmed it, because CGI wasn't that big back then. The water worm was groundbreaking, though I like the NTI's better. Ed Harris (Bud) almost died. I can't imagine the crew filming in scuba gear, but it was fascinating to see and learn how they did it. And yes, you're not dead till you're warm and dead. Loved your Geology Rocks shirt and the Pooh shirt

Fantastic reaction! The special edition kept in the scenes of Bud watching the news reports of the big waves etc that the civilization of the abyss shows him. When the film was released the studio cut that scene to make the film shorter, which seems really ridiculous now since that scene answers to many important questions.

I remember not particularly not liking The Abyss when I first saw it, as a kid. I found it long and boring. I tried it again when I was a teenager and loved it more with each viewing. So then, the Special Edition comes out, and I'm often vocal about my dislike of special editions, I watched it expecting to dislike it. Actually though the extended scene with the NTIs really builds stakes, and adds depth to the NTIs. For that scene alone I think the special edition was worthwhile in this case. Why they ever cut all that out in the first place I'll never understand. Was Cameron contractually obligated to deliver a product of a certain runtime? If so, that would be the last time anyone dictated anything to James Cameron, that filmic bad-ass.

There is a terrific novelization of the script based on the screenplay that was written by the incredible science fiction writer Orson Scott Card...who wrote Ender's Game. It explains a lot of things that happen in much more detail. I don't want to spoil it for anyone, so if you plan on reading the books, do not read more below... It definitely gives you a lot of backstory for each character, and it adds in the context of the Aquatic Aliens motivations, as well as many actions that they took that could never really have been shown in the movie. I won't say how and spoil that much of the book...but just to get you to WANT to read the book...the Aquatic Aliens TOLD Bud which wire to cut, but he did not know they were telling him. 😎
