At the time of its release, The Abyss, James Cameron's 4th film, was seen by critics and audiences as a stain on his otherwise spotless career. I, however, think it's his best and most underrated movie.

Totally agree, it is James Camero'n's masterpiece, not Terminator or Titanic, the harshest environment to shoot and rather than a sci-fi movie, it's a heartwarming love story and a mesage to humanity.

I remember hearing that the studio asked him to cut the run time so he took out the storyline that made the whole film make sense therefore audiences saw a lots of wow with no point. Directors cut is the best.

Eh, I have to say his best is original Terminator. Also, its a bit ridiculous to say Cameron is soley responsible for the modern blockbuster- Cameron's a big director no doubt, but George Lucas gets a LOT of credit there. You also made a factual error in saying that Cameron directed two prior films, Terminator and Aliens. Though these are his best-known early works, he also previously directed the B-movie Piranha II, and a couple of shorts. That said, you are correct about the effectiveness of certain scenes, and the strength of the leads' performances in them.

Good movie but not one of the best. Unfortunately it insults the audience with a "god of the gaps" script. Might as well find aliens in the center of the earth next. Fundamentally sophomoric and uninspiring to an intelligent audience.
