Love your dividers and love the funnel. Hint for funnel; I mark my legs on my funnel to make it quicker to raise and lower. Today I’m trying a block of wood under to change from quarts to gallon without lowering legs. But no matter what that funnel is the best out there on the market.

A windshield cleaning pad with a long handle to clean the rack. $10.00 Wally World. Use a pump up air wedge used to unlock car doors, use it to lift up the front of the freeze dryer to help drain. The wood moister meter works on conduction of a electrical circuit through water in the wood not temp. It will give a false reading if the food is high in sugar, salts or fat. Bend the french fry box loader so the top and bottom wings are touching and it is about spill proof. To get rid of long lasting odors like garlic, onions or smoked food in chamber after freeze drying, run a load of lemons and it will remove the smell.
@47retta3 жыл бұрын
How does an air wedge unlock car doors?
@lorencolt3 жыл бұрын
@@47retta Should have said car door unlocking kit. You use the air wedge to open a gap at the window frame between the door and door frame, then use one of the other tools in the kit to unlock the door through the gap. But you can go online and get the air wedge by itself.

Got the avid armor a few weeks ago and love it also. I reseal (vacuum seal) the oxygen absorbers after using some and that works well. Still waiting on those "original" lids for the small machine.
@2012spacetraveler3 жыл бұрын
Yes indeed, I purchased a Avid Armour .....oh man so much nicer than the vacuum sealer - I've been using that sucker regularly in the two weeks I received it. I have even been going through old mylar bags that I just had a oxygen absorber in them and re-sealing them with the chamber. I also been using it to reseal my block of cheese that I use a few days a week. It helps to keep the moisture in the cheese so much better than plastic wrap. And gone are the days of having to freeze food before vacuum sealing due to its moisture content, no more liquid leak.

I came here today to add the tip about resealing the bags of oxygen absorbers! Yes, cut off a corner of the bag, remove what you need, quickly squeeze out the air and reseal with the impulse sealer. It does work to keep the absorbers much, much longer! "Air tight" jars did not work. But since you have just added this to your tips, good for you!

Hey Brian, I don’t have a freeze dryer yet so I’m not positive this would work but I use a dedicated to the kitchen toilet brush for some hard to reach scrubbing at my house. The bristles are stiff and they do not smash down as easily as the softer brushes. Just an idea if you need it. Have a great day!

Harvest right says not to use any hard bristle brushes on your unit because of potential scratching. Nothing abrasive...it could void the warranty.

Is there anywhere I can get a recommended freeze dry time for different food categories, like a chart or listing. For example, how long to freeze dry prefrozen meat vs raw unfrozen meat. Or prefrozen fish vs raw fish, etc? My harvest right default is 1 hour, so I don't know how much more to increase for different food catgegories. Anyone know where I can get that info? I can't find anything.

Do you have a video of your oil changing setup? We are getting a second FD. We currently have the original one with the original original vacuum pump. Right now I drain off water, drain oil into mason jar, let sit for a couple hours, place in freezer over night and then filter into a homemade filter using toilet paper roll and coffee filter. I didn’t see a video name specifically identifying an oil change. We are opting for the premiere pump which everyone seems to love. Will have the new setup in a couple months. Thanks!!!

Do you still have t use oxygen absorbers if using the vacuum chamber? If so why?
@thefreezedryingcommunity2 жыл бұрын
Oxygen absorbers are a good backup and even though air has been removed from a bag or jar, small amounts of oxygen can still.remain trapped inside. The absorber eliminates that.
@judithanndavis2 жыл бұрын
When checking for cold spots with a digital thermometer - what is considered a cold spot (how many degrees)? 40, 66, 80, 100?? Thanks!
@thefreezedryingcommunity2 жыл бұрын
I look for a large drop in temp. If your trays are mostly 65 and then it drops to 40 or 30, its not done. When you pinpoint a spot, use your fingers to double check
@dwmiller41283 жыл бұрын
Question? Should you use warm or cold water to rehydrate? Does it depend on the food? For instance, potato salad.
@thefreezedryingcommunity3 жыл бұрын
It would be a preference for some things, but for others, like soups etc. the hot water seems to penetrate the food better
@Akdale7773 жыл бұрын
If you dont catch the fd cycle at end it goes into freeze mode. This will create cold food so the temp method is not always accurate...correct?
@thefreezedryingcommunity3 жыл бұрын
If your food is back to freezing temp, you would need to freeze dry again anyhow. The thermometer can tell you if there is a cold spot in the middle of a piece.

100cc for a pint 300cc for a quart
@chrismullin83043 жыл бұрын
I get 7mil bags from “Pleasant Grove Farms” and 500cc OA. They are overkill for small bags like the pint and quart, but it makes sealing bags in production easy. Also, the cost difference between 500 and 300 is negligible.

We've been talking about getting a freeze dryer for a couple of years now. Just can't seem to justify the cost for two of us..?
@gregorydeepdale12312 жыл бұрын
Why just the two of you? There are just two of us, and we are going to freeze dry all the meat in the freezers, then make meals for MRE's, and if there is time, we will freeze dry for friends and neighbors (with a small fee). That way if the power goes out, our freezers are not loaded, we only have to boil water for a meal - and our friends and neighbors can benefit also. I heard a story of how one person made MRE's for their aging family members in another state/province. Sent it in the mail (after all they are light). Ensures loved one eats real food that is familiar and nutritious. Would also work if you are recovering from illness/surgery. Another way to look at it is, you are buying food now at a decreased cost to what can be expected in the future and preserving it - which means a cost savings in the future. We buy car insurance, life insurance, house insurance - why not lifestyle insurance by being prepared in advance.
