If he was infantry, he would have combat training, and that doesn't leave you. Muscle memory is extremely powerful. And the thing to remember about WWII, Korea, Vietnam vets, even though they're in their 80's and 90's now, and they can barely move, there was a time, when they were more bad ass than you'll ever be. (That's a general "you'll", not a knock on you, specifically.)

He's a farmer - you'd be surprised how strong the average farmer can be after spending his lifetime working at the fields. Secondly, the man had motivation - protect his wife. In comparison, the thug was in escape mode - he was scared, having just been significantly traumatized by seeing his partner get sniped to death. Adding to his panic were the sniper rounds on the getaway car and the unexpected interference of his supposed hostage. Jokes aside, yeah, the farmer did conduct himself fairly well for someone leading a tame lifestyle. But had the Accountant not been fast in running up to the car and waylaying the thug, I fear the he'd have been shot.
