The Achill Prophecy (Tairngreacht Acla) TG4 Broadcast

(The Westport-Newport railway line fulfilled an ancient prophecy. Two hundred years earlier, Brian Rua O'Cearbhain, a man from Erris, had prophesied that “carriages on the iron wheels, emitting smoke and fire would carry coffins to Achill on both its first and last train journey”.
In fact in 1894, the first train on the Achill railway carried the bodies of the victims of the Clew Bay Drowning. Thirty-two young people left Achill on a “Hooker” to meet up with a steamer at Westport Quay. Seeing the ship they moved to one side of the Hooker to have a better look, suddenly a blast of wind overturned the boat and they all drowned. They were on their way to Scotland for potatoes picking (tattie hoking).
The second tragedy, which fulfilled the prophecy, occurred in 1937. Ten young people from Achill were burned alive in a ‘bothy’ (hut) in Kirkintilloch, Scotland. As in the past they traveled to Scotland for potatoes picking. Their bodies were shipped to Dublin and the line reopened to allow a specially commissioned train to carry them back to Achill. The burial took place in Kildownet Cemetery.
The steel tracks were lifted by the Irish Transport System in 1938 and sold to Germany, hungry for steel, during the Word War II.)

My Granny used to talk to me about these tragedies, she's from Mulranny and remembers the train coming home with the boys from Scotland. I'd never heard the story in such detail. Many thanks for the upload and God rest the poor boys.

My Dad's Mom and Dad would travel to Scotland from Dugort and Bunnacurry to work in the Scotland farms. They had fond memories of the work and the kindness of the Scots.

According to that last one 7 deaths at ports happened within 2 years 2017-2019. That's just deaths at ports. The actual prophecy was as follows: "Fire carriages on iron wheels will bring death"; it neither mentions a train, not a first or last one! However, it makes an interesting and colourful "folk legend". Also, while the first train did indeed carry the dead, the 1937 one did not run two weeks after the line closed, it ran almost two weeks BEFORE it closed - normal life continued the next day! The actual last train was just the normal local train on Thursday 30th September (check the coffin train date - about 20th).....

The long description contains a misprint regarding the men killed at Kikintilloch. They were burned alive not buried. There was bad blood between them and the locals as the latter were on strike and considered the Achill men to be strike breakers. At the inquest it was alleged the bothy door had been bolted on the outside. My grandfather, born on Achill but then living in England, was one of the relatives who went up to bring the bodies back home.

Disappointing to see, yet again, the historical inaccuracy repeated that the railway put on a special train in 1937 AFTER the line closed; it was ten days before the line closed. Enda Kenny repeated this on his recent programme. The newspaper article shown clarifies this. Also, the prophecy mentioned "fire carriages" and "iron wheels" and "death", but said absolutely nothing about a railway (which had not been invented) let alone any first or last train! The last trains were the normal ones on the daily timetable which operated until Thursday 30th September - the "coffin train" was on 20th. In addition, the idea of the tracks being loifted to drop on Germany as bombs is abject nonsense, a fantasy repeated regarding just about EVERY closed railway in Ireland. Otherwise this is a fascinating programme, great credit to all concerned!

You can't be serious. Compared to today? If you thought about it a bit more you'd realise most things are worse today. People could eat more or all fresh organic food back then. Harmful injection programmes are taking place nowadays. The household cleaning sprays, liquids with chemicals were not made back then. Most people in Ireland were made to bail out foreign bankers gambling deaths in the 2nd great depression which is so far lasting longer than the 1st one. They were 7 workplace deaths at Irish ports from 2017-2019. That's just port deaths. The last one was just two months ago "May 16, 2021 · TRIBUTES HAVE BEEN paid to a 19-year-old man who died in a workplace accident in Dublin Port yesterday". The road deaths have increased in Ireland because of the injection scam and the suicide rate has increased because of it. Many people said their harmful injections would injure and kill people and they were proved right as the companies removed their harmful blood clot injections from being sold/produced.

Yes, indeed those times were very hard in the west of Ireland. My grandmother’s people were down in Castlebar (an hour to the south) round this time, TB was still rampant, muscular dystrophy was a lot more common, a lot of poor kids had to work before they even left primary school. Thankfully the jab removed the threat of TB for generations of Irish people. A grand uncle of mine played on the local soccer team and had to ask his boss at the bacon factory for time off to play in it. It was an U-12 Connacht Cup final. Of course then you had the Church doing as they pleased, burying people in unmarked graves in places like Tuam. Anybody who tells you life back then was better has an agenda, the data shows that Irish people live longer, are generally healthier and have a much better quality of living now. Any foreign travel done back then was on the cattle boat to Britain for work rather than for a holiday. And a lot of Irish workers were terribly exploited (often by Irish bosses) on building sites, took to the drink, ended up in doss houses in London etc. My grandfather picked up someone’s body in Victoria Station back in the 1960s, a local fellow who had fallen on hard times but wouldn’t return out of shame. RIP.

The U.S sold v2 rocket fuel ingredients to the Germans during ww2. U.S pilots were ordered not to bomb IG Farben weapons factories in Germany during ww2 because they were owned by the same people, Dupont. Very interesting video. Cut out at the end though. What I don't get is to this day the Irish see emigration as the answer to their woes. I've put it down to something all Catholic countries have in common and it starts in the schooling. Catholic school that is.

@@jgriffin282😃 I am referring more to "to this day". Things were bad in those days, we all learned the desperate situation in school and have lived there 20 years or so. . It's been better for the last 2 to 3 decades now and surely there should be a complete national aversion to emigration by now as in 'no way Hose'.

You don't have the ability to see into Irish people minds and tell how they see things like emigration. You can watch for instance reeling in the years on Irish tv like many Irish people and see how they were and still are forced to emigrate because of roman catholic and brit oppression and hopefully temporarily leave and come back but immediately having to feed yourself in the new countries means that finding a job there is necessary and when you can come back home isn't certain if occupation is still going on so many end up staying in the countries they fled to. They don't see emigration as the answer. Emigration is forced onto them. It's not selected by Irish people as one of many options.
