No major Indian mutual fund invested in Adani stock. Almost every institutional and seasoned investor could guess something is wrong with the Adani group. Most of them would have taken short positions themselves if Indian laws permitted short selling.

As an Indian I would like to add that Adani is not a house hold name in India, at least it wasn't for the longest time, I don't think it was very famous right before 2015-2016, their value and their brand has really sky rocketed around the pandemic and the subsequent lock down, and in my personal very humble opinion, it's a house of cards, how can someone build a sustainable, ethical and profitable business this big in that short of a time, again that's just my humble opinion.

@Asbestos. None of Adani's businesses made any lay off till date, of its more than 100000 employees despite suffering heavy damage on account of subversive short selling, while all western companies resorted to frequent layoffs even at slightest dip in their mullah. All of Adani's projects are progressing profitably despite the damage caused by a firm of questionable credentials. So the Jury isn't out yet.

Publicly traded. However, they use private investment fund that they own to borrow money and buy their own stock, so the Adani family’s ownership of the company is a lot higher than it shows on paper. Their board are basically cronies of the owners, as there are very few institutional investors owning significant share.

Problem is Adani recently shot up and most Indian investors don't trust him like some established businesses in India have been for a while. Ambani, Birla or Tata are household names for decades now. Adani isn't. Such a controversy in early years of Adani would definitely make things messy for the company. I wonder if Gautam is gonna step down and let someone else takeover to clear out of this mess. It's too big to fail or disappear.

Adani's response on their auditor is a ridiculous proposition. The audit firm is a very small firm and could not possibly have the skills to audit such a large business. Adani won the contract in Australia through proper process. He is a big investor in Australia and doing projects It is already open that Gorge Soros funded Open society foundation was behind the protest against Adanis project in Australia. George Soros already expose his plan for regime change in India and targeting Adani as he considered Adani as ally of current political dispensation in India. Adani was billionaire for long time. He just strated rapid expansion in last few years on the basis of loans. Since he is mainly in brick mortar type company and doing govt. project( every political party govt. including Indian opposition parties have given them projects) so they were getting loan easily. There is nothing unethical in that. Yes it was common saying that share were overvalued as the growth debt driven. Now for some latest updates. Adani group is again climbing in market. Adani has already started paying back loan.😂😂😂 Hidenberg is not gospel of truth..they have alleged something and investigation will happen..under Supreme court of India. Adani are mainly a brick mortar type company they are not going to fail. Lol Hidenberg did not publish report FTF crypto scam of billions of dollars by SamBankman fried or recent Sillicon Valley Bank problem. Adani are engaging top US and Indian law firm for their cases. Hi Patrick I watch your videos regularly. I would like to point out that. Adani was not India’s largest Conglomerate. Not by a distance even when it was it was at the peak. Largest Conglomerate is the TATA Group who have a great corporate governance record not just in India but in every country they operate in. Followed by Reliance who are cash rich became fully debt free recently. I feel it’s important to point this out because shadow of Adani should not undermine good work done by value creating blue chip companies in India.

Very interesting as it seems both sides are over representing their hand. Given how the stock sale went, Adani shouldn't have too many problems staying solvent (unlike Evergrand), but they ARE seriously over valued. And how much of their stock price is real and how much fake is up for debate. I can see why the funds are split on the trade, it's all a question of if Adani's stock falls enough to be considered "good" again.

Financial noob here myself, but as I understand it, the issue with such a switch is partly a perception issue, partly a workforce size issue, and partially an issue of control. Also serious skill issue. To cover perception first, it's not a good idea as a large company to entrust your audit to a smaller company. It would be like having the 25th biggest accounting firm audit a company like Amazon. It's not a good look to have a half trillion dollar company be audited by a 3 million dollar firm when there are bigger ones to use. To move on to workforce size, the second issue is that a smaller firm probably doesn't have the workforce to give all the data of an extremely large company the attention it needs. That leaves plenty of room for things to slip through the cracks through sheer volume. Also, when trying to cover up a fraud, there are more mouths that could blab in a larger firm than a smaller one. Some might even have a conscious and keep things honest. Following up from the point about workforce size, the size of the contracts involved in auditing big companies means they pay a lot. Two billion dollars in an account means more when your only used to working with four billion per account on occasion than when you are used to staring at 50 billion dollar accounts all day. Bigger firms tend to have more large accounts. To a smaller firm, the loss of a large client would hurt immediately. This provides an incentive to not report honestly. Larger firms can mostly tank that kind of hit. Mostly. Arthur Andersen had a lot more to it as I understand. Finally, the skill issue. Larger firms have more people, and those that stay on gain large amounts of experience. To use a rough comparison, imagine winning 100k in the lottery versus winning two billion in the lottery. For the 100k prize, virtually any trust and estate lawyer will do. For the two billion dollar prize, you probably want an experienced lawyer from a big firm used to dealing with those numbers. To further extend the analogy, consider corporate bankruptcy. For a small restaurant or car repair shop, a local lawyer will do. You might even use a fresh faced lawyer. For a really big company like Amazon, Amica, Boeing, Disney, Enron, FTX, or Lockheed Martin, you want someone like John Ray the Third in your bankruptcy case. Someone who knows exactly how to get the best outcome and has done this a fair few times before. And is no stranger to large numbers. My dad works in accounting.

Adani got into two sticky wicket areas since Gautam Adani wanted to grow at a scorching pace, particularly in the last 3 years : 1. Took on huge debt against collateral to invest in growth & buyouts 2. Share values went up due to small numbers of shares available in the market; majority held by the owners itself. Because of this Adani Grp market capitalisation went up resulting in personal wealth/valuation of Gautam Adani going up, & becoming 3rd richest person in the world. Other than above, the Adani group is going to bounce back since their fundamentals are strong. I have dealt with Adani group personally.

Even if it is true that the Adani group has too much substance to be a con 8:40 , it still seems that some group companies will have less substance than others and will be forced to cut growth plans. What are the prospects for Adani investments in green energy? Perhaps renewable power generation has relatively more substance, while green hydrogen may be at too early a stage and be forced to cut back on plans. For the interest of the planet's green transition, I hope India can find a way to move forward on green hydrogen despite the current turbulence in one large company. Another question I have is about the impact on the decline of coal jobs in India. If Adani coal interests are forced to retrench, with limited access to loans or support from other group companies, a lot of Indian communities will suffer job losses sooner rather than later. I doubt India has much of a safety net in place for workers displaced by the climate transition, but I have no Idea how it could put a better net in place at this stage, without unfairly favoring particular companies like Adani.

Most of the Hindenburg reports were already known to native indian investors, mostly foreign investors were scared. Adani is over leveraged, but has cashflows, thanks to government contracts. Public sector companies in India failed to provide basic infra to people, so modi is mimicking chaebol south korean. There are also Tata , Ambani, Goenka, Mahindra etc but they have slick PR unlike Adani. Adani is also favored because he takes on risky projects where government wants to expand, government/people/adani sees it as win-win, better than some public sector company. As long as Adani delivers it works, but risky and crash is imminent.
