Michael Buerk is joined by chef Paul Ainsworth to celebrate food served to royal children. Paul cooks up cottage pie, said to be a favourite of Prince William when he was a boy, and former royal chef Darren McGrady prepares banana flan.
From Elizabeth II to Cleopatra, Real Royalty peels back the curtain to give a glimpse into the lives of some of the most influential families in the world, with new full length documentaries posted every week covering the monarchies of today and all throughout history.

I’ve been looking for a cookbook too! A few (very few) are on BBC, and some I’ve found by searching the web. Mostly I’ve replicated by trial and error. I’ve always made shepherds pie and cottage pie, but never with mushroom ketchup (which I’ve just found online). Darren McGrady has a KZbin channel with a number of recipes. He has cookbooks too.

@@GavinsMarineMom I am not British sweetheart, your entire country is based on Roman and ancient Greek values and history, you have accomplished literally nothing on your own. For the last 10 years your country is on a downfall, the world doesn't admire you like it used to, you have handled the pandemic the worst way possible, nobody is looking up to you anymore, it's silly and ignorant if you haven't noticed. Every country that has been an influence, also had an eventual downfall and you are going through it right now, you would have noticed if the American educational system didn't focus exclusively on the American continent and taught you a thing or two from world history. Learned something. My cottage pie and shepherds pie never came out right. Now I know to add the flour and to bake it longer so that the meat sauce thickens. I'm thinking back to our menu as kids. Campbell's alphabet soup. Or canned spaghetti on toast. The Royal children are served the very best that money can buy right from the start. No beans on toast. Mama writes a menu and the cook prepares it all. The good life. So many little extras that are just taken for granted. Who would want to give that up? Every month they should invite someone to stay just to have a magnificent experience. The experience of a lifetime. Someone should have suggested that. Unobtrusive. Just stay in the servant's quarters. It's a fantasy but how wonderful would that be? A week would suit me fine. Wishful thinking but it IS possible. Not now with the virus. You can tell I've been indoors too long. What about a wicker basket? Send me a wicker basket full of treats. ha ha ha ha (I added the laughter after reading my plea.)

Imho it depends on a mama to give her kids good food, if a mama is able to buy some canned spaghetti and toast, why not the vegs and some ground beef? One does not need to be a queen or to have servants to cook good, just a little time...
@goldkhw
@goldkhw 3 жыл бұрын
@@irishka_zolotse There was no veg. No ground beef. Everything was rationed in England during the War and for years after. With four children to feed, Mama heated up a can of spaghetti and gave us spaghetti on toast. (Bread was not rationed) I still gave that to my kids years later because it tasted so good. You eat it with a knife and fork. And beans? You can make toast fingers and circle the plate with them, like the spokes of a wheel, and the children can eat the toast with their fingers and dunk it into the beans in the center of the plate. The things we ate when that was all there was. And we loved it all because we were hungry. You know, I never thought that what my children were eating was odd. And they didn't either. Everything was made into a meal when I was a child. I was baby-sitting a little girl years ago, and she has told me now that that was the first time she had ever tasted spaghetti on toast. She also remembered my asking her if she would like a banana for dessert. She talks about it to this day. Because I sliced it into a bowl and sprinkled just a little sugar onto it and poured milk onto it. She ate it with a spoon. I realize now that all food had to be "padded" and have ingredients added to make it special because food was special at that time. I would take a little glass jar and walk miles looking for blackberries. One day, I had circled back to walk home with a solitary blackberry in my little jar when I noticed a wall of huge, ripe fruit behind a church rectory. Oh, my goodness. I was 8 years old. I knocked on the front door of the mansion, because the rectory WAS a mansion. A lovely, elderly, lady answered. I asked her if I could pick some blackberries. After looking at my little empty jar she said, "Yes." I quietly filled my jar, walked the miles home, put the berries in a bowl, squashed them with a fork, sprinkled a little sugar on them and added a drop of milk. I remember sitting, alone, silently eating my delicious blackberries. No one was home. I hadn't spoken all day to anyone except the lady in the rectory. Well. In hindsight, and I'm not deeply religious, but larger forces were at work that day. What with the church and the rectory and the "ripe to perfection" huge blackberries. Was it all a beautiful dream do you think? No. It was a blessing. Just a little blessing.

Why do so many British and Australian people get the use of "brought" and "bought" wrong so frequently. At 26:48 she says "Prince William was bought down". it's supposed to be "brought". Bought is the past tense of buy. Brought is the past tense of bring. You bring Prince William down (present tense) or your brought Prince William down (past tense). Unless you purchased/buy/bought Prince William some where along the line, you don't use "bought". Brits. Aussies! Get it right!

After hearing about jellied eels and kidney shuffle, I can definitely see why this was a favorite of Prince William's. Looks easy and delicious!

How DOES one make mushroom ketchup? I had never heard of it before. Is Worcestershire Sauce close enough?

The cottage pie looks amazing and lots of great tips... but, I would not want the chef's dirty spoon anywhere in my dish (and his spoon went from mouth to dish many times).

They try to make Princess Anne into a commoner with the fish & chips and what not but it’s the princess’s lady in waiting who gets her kippers and then writes a thank you note!

I feel like the monarchy will fall apart after the Queen is passes. Besides honor and duty she shouldn’t have to be bothered by the antics of her family. The next King’s reign isn’t looking so great unless it skips to William.

I pray that the Monarchy is dismantled quickly!!! Even if I DID support fascist parasites living lavishly off the working people... Lizard Charles & his Rottweiler concubine Camilla would be put it to shame. That whole family is vile--hanging out with Jimmy Saville--well known r*pist, child-r*per, necrophile, & probable serial- killer, who had constant access to the castle, & was an "advisor" to Charles . Andrew had his best pal Jeffrey Epstein on top of it SAVILLE. There are famous pictures of Jeffrey Epstein & Ghislaine Maxwell sitting on the porch at the "queen's" country cabin, as well as sitting on & clowning around on the "royal" throne . And, there was an outstanding warrant for Lizzie & her vampire consort, because TEN FIRST NATIONS CHILDREN in Canada went out of for a "picnic" with them, & NOT ONE WAS EVER SEEN AGAIN. These "people" are depraved monsters, in my opinion & experience.
