I've found that for bale grazing you see the actual benefit 2 seasons after. The first year looks a little rough, but the 2nd year is when you really see some good results. The only thing with bale grazing is to be sure not to place the bales in the same spot year after year. Both methods are good options and definitely much better than bale rings.

Thanks for your comment and following along. Been trying to document my journey of getting into all this. The good, bad and ugly.

Bales.....set out ? All depends on the size of the bale ????? The smaller the better. Too often farmers try to use 5x5 ( plus ) bales. I use 3x4 foot diameter bales. Works great. Cows keep moving.

Unrolling gives a lot more room for all the animals to eat at once and spreads the nutrients from manure and refused hay better than bale grazing. Unrolling daily also results in a more even plane of nutrition. Bale grazing is a lot less labor.

Wait until you see how that bale grazed spot looks about August next year.

Looking forward to seeing how those areas respond. Thanks for the comment

At 4:49 if you dump a huge pile of hay in one area.......what do you expect ?? If you want them to clean it up.....expect " traffic " pugging and waste !!!

Will you have to seed those areas? Higher nitrogen levels there?

Will be higher levels of every nutrient and most importantly carbon.

I don't think it ever makes sense to bale graze. Even if you are fixing an area, spread it out so you don't have those big clumps of hay. You can tighten them down too for 2-4 hours and get great fertility in that area.

I certainly like the unrolling better

On very poor ground it is the best thing you can do to make it more productive in my experience. For us, we feed whole bales without rings when it is wet. Only unroll when it's dry or frozen as it gets trapped into the mud. I much prefer unrolling though.

By unrolling hay twice a day, I am able to only put out what they will clean up immediately. This greatly reduces waste.
