What dates are not accurate? Genuinely curious about what the actual dates are compared to the ones here
@SheathEntertainment4 жыл бұрын
Descending well namely the December date is not accurate, it’s been commonly accepted as May 16th from multiple sources. The only reason why it was chosen for this video, is because a few calendars found in Half Life say December on them which is probably where the creator took their inspiration from. 2000 is okay for right now, since 200x is all we were given and everything was still leftover from the 90’s in that year. The other problem is that this entire timeline happens in about a month when the Xen infestation spreads before the Combine came along...which is incorrect. I personally emailed Marc Laidlaw about the time frame of when the Seven Hour War began after Black Mesa was destroyed, and he said within days. So technically, things accelerated a whole lot faster than what we saw here in I want to say, a week at best. If anything, I’m thinking Independence Day length when the world was destroyed and taken over in around 48-72 hours.

I think its nuts in the sense in Half life 2 you dont see much of the combines power because humanity already lost and what you are seeing is an occupying/security force. I mean I was wondering what the fuck the combine had to just completely beat the worlds militaries in 7 hours, then i played Black Mesa and finally beat Nihilanth today. I would imagine fighting the Combine in an invasion would be like dealing with the Borg+the Zerg/Tyranids while some of them have jedi powers. Im like yeah that would beat our militaries in 7 hours. I mean I could not even imagine the logistics of trying to plan a military defense around an enemy that might be superior in all ways plus constantly using teleporters. I mean If I was an officer dealing with that I would tell my men to flee to the fucking hills and hide.
@samsonguy10k3 жыл бұрын
@@krel3358 One way to look at it is this. You don't need as many troops for an occupation as you do an invasion. Imagine the assault of the courtyard of the suppressor with Striders and what it took to get through that. Now imagine going through that with a thousandfold Striders, Combine Gunships, and a million headcrabs falling out of the sky to turn anybody they can get their beaks onto into your enemy. And that's just the forces we know of that was kept around after the surrender. All of that around the United Nations building. I think the only reason it took seven hours was because they were holding off attacking the building itself because of their inside man working his magic bullshit on the national leaders and representatives. Actually, they had something to do with. Remember questionable ethic labs? They even had a captured Xen Grunt, stripped off armor and hornet arm, being locked inside a test chamber that can either be gassed, electrified, and set on fire. Also, before Resonance Cascade, they already had ventured into Xen, with HEV being Mark IV when Freeman was hired, and HEV being modified and improved to have sophisticated combat systems and such. So, I'd say they already angered locals and subsequently would get hard retaliation for what the science team had done. But at least they wanted to mend it up by having Freeman to kill Nihilanth to stop the nightmare once and for all.
@loomhigh4 жыл бұрын
Yeah. The Vietnam war was a weird time.
@RTDragonCommando4 жыл бұрын
The only problem with this is that Gordon's whole reason for killing the Nihilanth was to stop exactly this from happening. When you kill the Nihilanth it closes the dimensional rift, preventing further portals from opening entirely. It's actually explained at some point in HL2 or the episodes (I can't remember where right now) that the Combine only noticed humanity because of the resonance cascade, and their assault on earth has nothing to do with a continued high energy event.
@Votable00x4 жыл бұрын

I really really really liked this. It was creepy in a way that didn't need spooks and jumps to get you going. It's a slow burn into increasing tension. That's perfect. I also really loved the attention to detail on nations that had different populations. Like of course China would suffer greatly quicker while Greenland took forever to change color. I also also loved the view that this came from headlines from a news station or paper. It's such a great way to capture the zeitgeist of the event unfolding. I have some notes if you ever changed it though as a person who's a big policy buff and really fun at parties because of it (read: not fun at parties because of it): - Most governments would have declared a state of emergency soon after the US did. State of emergencies are typically declared not when the danger is in your house, but when it's waiting at your doorstep. - Financial collapse of the stock markets would have started potentially the day after the initial event. Stock markets have historically had their fragility tied to big events. The stock market dipped hard after 9/11. It dipped hard very quickly after the initial explosion of cases of COVID. It takes very little to spook the market. Keep it ongoing and you have a recipe for disaster fast. December is usually a hugely strong time for the stock market, play on that. A market that is performing the same in December as it did in October would be seen as a weak December. Anything less is alarming. - Whatever happened with all those "entities" that the portal deposited? They're mentioned in articles shown, and I assume they're being fought, but it also sounds like "Bob is going to work tomorrow still" kinda deal. It'd be cool to see some writing on, say, the National Guard is being deployed more as the events are going on and how state/local governments are dealing with the issue. That's touched on at the beginning, but combat ready men aren't infinite in numbers and I'm sure the US wasn't keeping containment very well given the ending. It'd be cool to read about that. - Civil unrest. It's touched on once, but supply chains, especially those involving foods, are critical infrastructure that isn't planted into the ground. When bad things happen, resources are diverted. Diversion of resources strains supply chains. What are people doing, and how are the people acting? Tiny shifts in people's lives tend to have big magnifications in civil unrest. - The President gives a lot of speeches in the East Room. Maybe he shouldn't. He waits until 7 PM to give a speech, and that's a lot of hours to wait when there's more than a few thousand people affected. There's a protocol given to public news stations to cut to the President if he or she has something to say that's grave to the nation. It's been used before, so it's definitely a realistic thing to expect. - What are the people doing? I mentioned civil unrest, but a lot of people will just be trying to make it by. How are governments responding? Are they being herded, relocated, dismissed? Again, this is touched on briefly at one point, but I'm sure this would impact people even early on. The weather alone would be enough to close big industries like tourism, outdoors work, really anything where being outdoors or within the elements is required to do your job. Say you're a farmer, and sure it's winter so stuff isn't growing, but you still have animals. What about radio transmission systems? Magnetic storms do happen in real life in more extreme parts of the world and they wreak all sorts of havoc with telecommunication and radio communication equipment. I wouldn't spend half an hour writing that if I didn't love the idea and the execution. I hope some of that at least is thought provoking and something worth building on or at least spurs additional thought, because I love this concept to death. It's all just numbers, text, and a map, and yet it's chilling.

@@Neinfeld I think it's a bit weird that Clinton is the only one featured in all of the news from the US even though he was already a lame duck at the time the incident happened. As President-elect, GWB would have been expected to make public statements on the matter as well, and they would have also been treated as news, right? In fact, he would have likely started to receive briefings as soon as the death toll went above 100k, if not 10k. Globally, it's amusing that it feels like every country is just sitting still until their key cities get hit by portal storms one by one. I am sure that after like the 10th, or at most 20th, country, got hit, many others would have had started to go for pre-emptive evacuations, or they would have had started taking other measures based on pure paranoia.
