After miraculously remaining 29 years old for almost eight decades, Adaline Bowman (Blake Lively) has lived a solitary existence, never allowing herself to get close to anyone who might reveal her secret. But a chance encounter with charismatic philanthropist Ellis Jones (Michiel Huisman) reignites her passion for life and romance. When a weekend with his parents (Harrison Ford and Kathy Baker) threatens to uncover the truth, Adaline makes a decision that will change her life forever.

I thought the story with Adaline and her daughter was far more compelling than either of the love interests.

C. A. Gravenhorst - I understand what you mean but she was authority figure with her daughter during the lunch scene. What she is being is "vulnerable" at this time because she is tired of running and lying to people and missing out. I know I would if I were her. So she talks to her daughter as not her mother but her only friend that understands this problem.

Can be such a terrible thing: this never ending fountain of youth. You fall in love. You watch your partner die. You choose to start all over again. And it all happens again. And again. And again. But then when you give it up, you gmface the pain of loneliness. And worst, the internal loneliness where not a single soul can understand how you feel. And you can't stop it. Unless you kill yourself. But you can't. Because you can't. And it does not stop. Such pain.

It's avery interesting idea. But in reality it's scary. Life without love is very difficult. This woman still had her daughter's love always. She was very lucky that way.

That's what they should have made after this movie came, about those two. Also, I wonder what other lovers she had in the 70's, 80's, or 90's? That would have been interesting also.

Interesting concept, but the problem with her characterization is that she portrays Adaline with an almost adolescent emotional dimension; a woman of this age and experience, especially with her daughter (as any mother could attest), would exert an authority and gravity in relation to her child that is unfortunately lacking here. Perhaps Burstyn could have expressed a greater sense of emotional dependence on, or derivation from, her mother (after all, she IS her mother!) rather than motherly-ness. That drawback aside, it is an otherwise moving film.

+C. A. G. I know what you mean but I think once a daugther is an adult, the relationship changes. It's like that with my mother. My parents have been divorced since I was a kid and my mother relies on me for emotional support when she has problems in her personal life and job. Like I rely on her. I think Adaline is simply being emotional and vulnerable in this scene.

C. A. G. well said. I think it may just be how Blake Lively played her. If this role has been given to an actress with better range like maybe Emily Blunt. It really would have worked. Lively is terribly inconsistent in her performance. One moment she's trying to be motherly and the next moment she's giving off an adolescent vibe instead of "old soul". Lively is trying to exert grace but comes off adolescent.

@@rumblefish9 You are aware that it's not her who wrote the scenario and she is doing as the director ask her. You can be a mother and vulnerable, it's not mutually exclusive. She's not any mother nor have any classical mother/daughter relationship. You think that having a body that don't match your age wouldn't mess with your mental health/sense of self/emotions? Plus having a child looking older than you? Plus not being able to have any true relashionship/social circle apart from the aformentioned child for litterally decades wouldn't affect you by the isolation? In this video she's not "being adolescent", it's called being human. Actually I have the opposite point of you, I found it quite "unrealistic" (as far as this film goes and if you have any knowledge of human psyche), that she would be as sane, serene and well balanced as she is. She should've been completly crazy at this stage, not at all calm and collected.

Keep in mind that without the aging of the body, comes the lack of aging of the brain. She has clear knowledge that love without age is heartbreak but she is still 29. Trapped.

If they were gonna do a youth time travel movie, they should have left the romance out and concentrated on the mother and daughter bond. People gotta realize, yes Ellen had a normal life but a sad one compared to her mother immortal life whom she haven't seen in 31 years (1953-1984). Even before the first automobile accident, her mother's life were completed by having a family while her daughter didn't have none on her own. What really pissed me off about the ending, Adaline get to have another new life but this time as a normal human being while her daughter is at to the point where she won't live in another five years. I always felt the real victim in that movie was Ellen. Because her daddy died when she was five, haven't seen her mother in 31 years, and had to witnessed her mother having a future as a normal human again while she's about to go.
