Something that didn’t help these toys was the robot design overhaul in AOE. Every Transformer in AOE had next to no vehicle kibble in their robot mode, which you can get away with in the movie with CGI, but not so much with toys, which resulted in all the shell forming.

It was a horrendous decision. The characters barely looked like transformers and instead looked like they were giant humans made out of steel wool. Made for way less interesting designs when you have absolutely zero clue on what the characters transform into just by looking at them

They did that to add a more humanoid element, which is strange because the whole point of transformers is “robots in disguise”. Drift a samurai, Prime a medieval knight, Crosshairs as some sort of mercenary, Hound as a fat soldier from WWII. I think the only normal one was Bee in his 68 Camaro mode, because in the 2014 Camaro, people said he’s supposed to be a ninja.

The funny part is I feel they could've still made the designs look like those they're inspired by while retaining the robotic look. Hound for example could've easily retained the bulky soldier like design but with parts of his alt mode's cab being located around his waistline rather than his top, kinda like an inverse of Prime.

Those figures were so rough. You gotta feel bad for the toy designers. They had to translate 3 characters that didn't even transform on screen, and a secondary bad guy who "transforms" in the worst way possible. Guess the budget went into the Dinobots and Lockdown's ship instead of the KSI army actually transforming.

This was definitely a dark time of the toyline. i remember just being constantly disappointed and skipped out on a majority of them. Drift and crosshairs were okay but had their own problem.s The only highlight was giving us one of the best Voyager Optimus, and even then it was only a design that was used for a few minutes the movie.

Stinger actually did get a couple of legion class toys in the US, and in the Takara Tony version of the AOE toyline, he got a deluxe figure, but it was just a recolor of the deluxe AOE Bumblebee, making his vehicle mode completely inaccurate. Thank goodness the Studio Series figure exists.

4:10 Nah nah, cut that out. Lockdown was never as tall as Prime in any of their scenes lol. In fact, if you watch the movie scenes a little more carefully, he’s almost always depicted as being significantly shorter than Prime (the scale of course varies from scene to scene due to animator inconsistencies). This is also reflected by their official sizes. Bayverse Prime is 28 feet and Lockdown is 20 feet. He’s the same height as Ratchet.

I personally blame Transformers Prime for how terrible the AOE toy line was, the TFP show and toy line were both complete financial disasters for Hasbro because of how disorganized the show runners and toy designers were with budgeting, so they cut the budget of the next line of figures to make up for it, and AOE suffered because of that

Also I'm not arguing against the fact the showrunners made bad financial decisions but let's not act like hasbro was spotless for rushing not only said showrunners but the animators to an extent as well. A show like prime would of taken 2 years to animate. They had 10 months to work with. This causing a constant back and forth between hasbro and the showrunners (confirmed by rik Alvarez). Some of these back and forths causing s3 to be changed into beast hunters and the planned 4th season to be canceled. Keep in mind too the hub wasn't doing that speculator in the first place which isn't surprising. It only brought in a few thousand viewers, at one point rivaling nicktoons but was nothing compared to Disney or nickelodeon or cartoon network the entire time of it's existence. They didn't have as much freedom as you think they did. They had freedom in some places. Not all. The downfall of prime was due to both parties. Not just the showrunners. As for the toy quality changing after prime ended, there were budget cuts period during the early 2010s. That wasn't entirely prime's fault.

This is a weird story but ill share. I remember when the toyline came out (i was 8) and when i first saw the ads for one step changers i literally said myself "wow the ad looks cool....the toys look bad" and hell i thought i was missing something and thought the main toys got replaced by the one step changer till later i found out they made the main figs for the movie and didn't appeal to me. So i bought a one step lockdown weeks later and i literally stopped collecting TFs for almost 8 years. Yeah even RID15 took out the love of the franchise to me

I think AOE and TLK are the onky movies where I don't have toys because my shop didn't ever have any on shelves. I only got ones from DOTM, ROTF, and 2007! I'd argue TLK was just as bad or worse since they reused and repainted molds that shouldn't have been(looking at AOE Bee being rereleased with less paint), worse qc issues(looking at Dragonstorm and Berkserker) and overall weird exclusive stuff(like aoe had both takara and premium edition having decent exclusives like movie accurate or g1 colored dinobots, while tlk had stuff like mission to cybertron which again reused and repainted molds that are super old). I do think all the voyager figures were good in tlk though.

Ha! I had a toy of lockdown but it's worst then the thumbnail! It doesn't transform at all, you have the car with the figure underneath and a button for if to pop open. You can't even move it's limb and he had the battle mask for a face from the film but I never seen it so I thought he was coughing out his guts. And you wanna know what's worse!?!? My theory of aoe transformers being so bad is because aoe lost a lot of money in the box office but ever since bumblebee and rise of beasts came out the transformers toys seem to be getting better rise of beast wasn't a great movie but it's cgi and characters designs has to be one of the best for me I just recently got studio series optimal prime and they literally glazed him I've never seen such well detailed toy
