The Air Force is pitting its AI-piloted F-16 against humans in 'complex dogfights'

On Wednesday, the U.S. Air Force revealed that its ongoing effort to field artificial intelligence (AI) pilots for combat aircraft has already seen AI-piloted F-16s take on their human counterparts in complex air-combat exercises.
This effort is part of DARPA’s Air Combat Evolution (ACE) program, and is seen as an essential step toward equipping forthcoming 6th-generation fighters with AI-enabled drone wingmen.

@@RealisticFPS_It’s possible to go beyond the 9g mark in various aircraft and though we train pilots to hold a 9g turn for at least 30 seconds, both pilot and aircraft can go beyond that. For example, the new Gripen-E has a G-limiter of 9g, but in emergency situations it can be overridden up to 12g. The issue with this is that it will have to go through a very thorough maintenance process afterwards. I don’t know what the G-limit is on the F-22, nor how far they went in testing it to determine how far beyond any G-limiter onboard it can actually go as it’s not a plane I’ve had the honour of flying. The only thing I am sure of is that pilots are capable of going quite a way beyond the 9g mark for short periods of time. In fact, there was an Indy car that crashed and the driver survived 214g, something that was more than 8x the lethal level. I have no idea how far the structural integrity of aircraft is pushed in testing, but I’m fairly certain that pilots can manage short periods of time at G-forces higher than any aircraft is capable of. Ejection seats put around 20g’s on pilots as well, just for reference.

Yes technically, although it still would be better to make a new aircraft since the cockpit wouldn’t be needed anymore. A cockpit is a huge hinderance, both on weight and aerodynamically, so makes a lot of sense to still make a new plane and avoid that waste, because for obvious reasons, you don’t need a cockpit on an AI plane
@TheVirtualObserver

If we've shut down production of older aircraft to retool factories to make new ones then there's nothing that'll bring the older aircraft production back. F35's are about as cheap as F-18's these days anyway and so much more capable.

@@Narco42 You'll never convince every nation to prevent Skynet when this technology matures. Fighter jets with a cockpit carry a lot of extra baggage to support the meat sack on-board. An unmanned variant not only reduces the pilot requirements of the fleet, but also allows for more maneuverability, range, payload, etc. Keep in mind that even current model jets tend to have much higher maximum G's than the pilot can handle. Unmanned designs can be *at least* as deadly and likely more so.

@user-nv4mj5rb4n You sure you don't mean the Russians? There were a few specially modified fighters for ramming attacks but they were uncommon. The dense formations of bombers the Luftwaffe was sent to intercept were posed a serious collision hazard there were many accidents (as in colliding with bombers unintentionally). However, especially early in the war, Russian pilots were particularly known to conduct ramming attacks, especially against bombers, due to many of their fighters being armed with only a couple of rifle-caliber machineguns. They would even attempt to do so while minimizing damage to their own plane and some even managed to fly all the way back to base after conducting a ramming attack.

May I recommend the Anime _Battle Fairy Yukikaze,_ based on a series of short stories and later novels starting in 1984? Yukikaze (Literally: Snow Wind) is an aircraft AI, who is fully capable of taking control of the aircraft if the pilot should become incapacitated. Later "loyal wingman" AI aircraft are introduced (although not called that) who take direction from the pilot or the main fighter AI. All of this originating in fiction 40 years ago. We've just finally advanced our technology enough to catch up with our imagination.

My son works for Boeing and one of his first jobs was getting original F-18s ready for computer interfaces to be used as controlled drones. Now AI is being looked at to get rid of the human interface.

It seems to me that adding that AI would be an incredibly effective auto pilot add-on that could take over incase the human pilot was incapacitated by Wounds or G-Force or even mistake that would crash the plane in the immediate.... This would meld the human and mechanical together with the best of each....

I suspect the real value of AI in the cockpit will be for survivability. SAMs operate within engagement limits. Cockpit AI with advanced sensors will likely be able to dodge any SAM coming it's way. You can tell comparing control surface areas of fighters vs missiles which will be the more maneuverable when push comes to shove.

The problem I suspect with this is that when the war starts, and lots of unexpected things happen as they always do, it would be a lot more difficult to re-program the AI to cope than to have human pilots learn and adapt

There is one great advantage an AI platform has when piloting a fighter against a human adversary: the lack of a human body vulnerable to G-forces.

We already know NGAD fighter drones will be more maneuverable without their flesh bag pilots holding them back, but what else will eliminating the cockpit do? Increased range, for sure, since we won’t have that needless protrusion or all the manual controls/indicators. Heck, the whole thing could be replaced with a fuel tank or weapons bay. I’d love to see you brainstorm about this!

It also eliminates the risk... which is not always a good thing. Take, for example, the standard "testing" done by nations. Russian aircraft routinely fly towards NORAD/EU airspace and we dutifully send up interceptors. Response is timed, and everyone goes home. Everyone tries to be professional. Nobody does anything stupid (except the Chinese). What happens when the interceptor, or the bomber for that matter, has no pilot? Shoot it down? You kill a pilot and it's a big deal, an international incident... best avoided. You shoot down a drone and, well, remember the last time that happened? Remember the consequences? Yeah, me neither. Like it or not, pilots are often a tripwire defence. You don't shoot them down because killing them creates problems. Losing that could actually increase the risk of escalation.

@@4Fixerdave Good point. I doubt Iran would’ve taken control of that RQ-170 and steered it to their own base by jamming comms and spoofing military GPS if there was a would-be pilot inside. ;)

This is going to change aviation. Right now there's not much point in building airframes to handle ridiculous G-loads because humans can't live through them. But imagine the possible designs when the only limit to G loads is the materials selected. That'll pretty much make human vs AI dogfights impossible.

would be interesting to fin out what kind of sensors the AI relies on to track the opposing fighter. Are they onboard or does it receive updates from AWACS. It will need to track the other aircraft's position to plot its next moves. After this I supposes they will need to detect/track incoming missiles and plot defensive moves.
