Tom Ryaboi and Ernest Emond have spent the last 10 years capturing the Toronto skyline, often meeting and planning shots for their own films. So it felt only natural they would
team up for their latest film, The Air Up There.
With The Air Up There we really wanted to explore the human relationship with the city, both physically and metaphysically. It’s predicted that 70% percent of the world’s population will reside in cities by 2040. How did we make this transition so quickly after
having spent tens of thousands of years living in rural and even nomadic communities?
We thought about what it means to be a product of the modern city, and the effect this way of living has on our nature. We thought about George Simmel’s theory that urban dwellers ultimately adapt to their environment and reflect the very structures of the metropolis.
Could it be that the urban landscape is designed to regulate our behaviour, to set forth a limited set of practices that constitute our everyday existence? Ultimately, we wonder if this monumental change in habitat has resulted in us losing something along the way, or if it’s still in us, waiting to be awakened.
